Schalk Burger will make his 50th Test appearance for the Springboks on Saturday when he takes to the field in the second Test of the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series against the British and Irish Lions at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Sport24 reports:

Burger returns from injury and has been selected in the place of Heinrich Brüssow on the side of the Bok scrum. Brüssow moves to the bench, with scrumhalf Ricky Januarie dropping out of the match 22.

With the selectors opting for a five-two split on the bench no reserve scrumhalf has been selected. Ruan Pienaar will provide scrumhalf cover.

The only other change is on the bench, where hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle replaces prop Gurthrö Steenkamp.

“We believe in the abilities of our players and we are confident that they will take things up a few notches on Saturday,” said Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers.

“We are a squad of 22 focused on a common objective, which is to go out and win a Test Series against a very good Lions team.

“We know that we will be faced by a Lions team that will be playing to level the Test Series and will provide us with a stern test. We must make sure that we are more than equal to the task.”

The combined number of caps in the starting line-up is 617. The squad of 22 has a combined total of 725 caps.

Bryan Habana and Jean de Villiers will both be playing in their 48th Test match for the Springboks.

  • Very good team.

I hope you guys are happy now that Ricky is no longer there.

I’m looking forward to much less bitching and moaning, especially from VinChainSaw… 😈

  • @wpw (Comment 1) : I’m now even more confused, if he was planning to drop him then what the hell was yesterdays, backing him to the hilt, all about, where things were said that have been interpreted as political. ❓

  • I would have had Schalk come of the bench in his first game back from injury…Brussow very unlucky IMO. I will also not have Bekker on the bench, but rather another loosie and Russouw can cover lock.

Jannie Dup is the only prop I can think of who might feel unlucky but his work rate around the field is pretty poor.

  • @molly (Comment 22) : so I reckon that we have Carstens who can cover either side quite comfortably. The intention would appear to be playing John for 80 minutes, which makes sense. If he gets injured, Deon will have to make do at 3.

Look I’m willing to give him another chance…but when he comes off the bench he must start making an impact. We can’t afford gloryboy locks!

  • @Villie (Comment 33) : I agree Villie, Bekker has done nothing special Unless they are investing in him for the future?? I always thought Skeat was better than Bekker, had a higher work rate but Province let him go, then I am not sure what Johann Muller has done wrong at national level, he brings bulk good work ethic as well as providing leadership. Oh well we can’t put everybody in the side

  • Johan is in the same mould as Bakkies isn’t he???

So does it make sense to have 2 locks on the bench who play as enforcers??

Lets say Matfield gets injured, would you rather prefer a Muller/Bakkies combination or Bekker/Bakkies combination??

You can’t play 2 bruisers together imho.

Bekker is not an enforcer and will probably never be one. He did however make quite a few tackles when he came on as a sub.

  • Comment 37, posted at 24.06.09 07:09:07 by wpw Reply
  • @wpw (Comment 37) : True, but then why sub him for Bakkies, Wes My point is if you are going to sub a player its probably going to be bakkies rather than Matfield, so why have Bekker on the Bench, I see Bekker as an understudy to Matfield, so unless you are going to replace him then dont have Bekker. I hear you about Matfield, but I believe we needed a player like Muller or evern Danie Russouw to replace Bakkies, again just mho 😀

  • @Charlie (Comment 11) : the only reason it was only two missed was he never was in position to make the other 10 that were his to make. at least fourie went looking for work instead of hiding. 😆

  • @Charlie (Comment 42) : 😆 @Charlie (Comment 41) : 😆 i actually like adi. i think he is a great player. i just think this year he has been a little off. especially since his injury. in his defence though he never had a centre that assisted his game style. maybe with riaan and his operation he will be back to the machine he was last year.

  • @Charlie (Comment 44) : well hopefully the backline does. very little was created by our backline, and that usually comes from conservative rugby. i think the boks were worried about their rustiness so decided to play 10 man rugby. we hopefully will see a little bit more from adi jp and pigeon.

Steyn and Fourie was our WC center paring and also the best we had for a while…best defensive center paring we have had since Mulder and Muller…
