This is a bit of a strange one that seems to have popped up out of nowhere. De Wet Barry (remember him?) captained the Mighty Elephants against the Valke this weekend!
Now you’ll know that I’ve never rated Barry – not even one little bit – but it says something quite interesting that a player of his stature is prepared to throw in his lot with the Cheeky boys. The Elephants seem to be assembling a reasonable team of cast-offs, with former Sharks (and Cheetahs) winger Howard Noble getting onto the scoresheet for them this weekend.
There are a few more former Sharks in the ranks. Utility back Carl Bezuidenhout has moved down their on a full-time basis, while loose forward Jacques Potgieter is playing for them as part of a loan deal.
Barry, though, is the really big name and it seems that he has signed a three-month contract to play for the Elephants. Perhaps he’s just biding his time while trying to secure a contract in Europe – or maybe he’s waiting to see what the near-term future looks like for the Southern Kings. Only time will tell.

3 months does seem a bit short. Better than nothing I suppose.
@McLovin (Comment 1) : he must be pretty desperate!
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Must be.
De Wet has 2 Currie Cup medals along with his Tri Nations winners medal as opposed to no medals for young Trevor Halstead. 😈
@wpw (Comment 4) : so now we’re comparing cart horses?
@robdylan (Comment 5) :
The Law…
On top of spaghetti… all covered with cheese… I lost my poor meatball… when somebody sneezed… It rolled off the table… and onto the floor… and then my poor meatball… rolled out by the door.
Forget LA Law… this is OP Law!
@VinChainSaw (Comment 9) : OP?
@robdylan (Comment 10) :
Oranje Prystaat…
Nah I was referring to Oostelike Provinsie.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 11) : oh right… them 🙂
