Wellington – Western Province’s Currie Cup aspirations are on track after an easy and well-deserved 38-7 win against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington on Saturday.
Sapa reports that Province led 8-7 at half-time and secured a much-needed bonus point for their five try effort.
The bonus point came in the 76th minute when prop Brok Harris barged over in the corner. But with the siren going, Province kept the ball in hand and a fine break by Sevens Springbok Gio Aplon saw young JJ Engelbrecht score the fifth and final try in the 81st minute.
Boland made life difficult for the visitors in the first half, but after half-time Province took control and Boland were forced to defend for long periods.
WP had an early opportunity to take the lead in the eighth minute, but fullback Joe Pietersen missed a rather easy penalty.
Referee Marius Jonker awarded Boland a penalty try in the 18th minute after Province obstructed on their own goalline. Justin Peach to convert, but Province paid a double price when New Zealand lock Chris Jack was yellow carded for the incident.
Province got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute when left wing Aplon scored an easy try in the corner with no Boland defender in sight.
Province took the lead for the first time in the 32nd minute when Pietersen succeeded with a penalty right in front of the Boland posts.
Province let themselves down at crucial stages and their execution was not what you would expect from a team of their calibre.
But the second half produced a different story.
Province started to control from the kick off and ran the ball with every opportunity.
Pietersen increased WP’s lead to 11-7 with a straight-forward penalty then his next penalty increased their lead further to 14-7.
In the 55th minute, exciting young centre Juan de Jongh scored WP’s second try next to the posts for Pietersen to convert. This was a fine effort by the youngster who grew up next to the Boland Stadium.
Right wing Tonderai Chavhanga scored WP’s third try in the 64th minute after a well-aimed grubber kick by flyhalf Peter Grant to increase their lead to 26-7.
The Harris and Engelbrecht tries put the final nails into the Cavaliers’ coffin.
Province also excelled in defence and did not concede a single point in the last 62 minutes.

De Jongh had another brilliant game and was named MOTM.
Hope he keeps his feet on the ground and continues to improve as the season goes on.
Great to see Grant at flyhalf!!! 😎
@wpw (Comment 1) : +1 on Grant
umm, what time does this site open???
WP can be grateful that Boland are so kak.
I watched most of this. Numerous errors, little knock-ons, forward passes…
Only later in the second half did WP start looking a bit better, but by then I reckon Boland had run out of puff.
5 points in the bag so shouldn’t really complain.
See on rugby365 that Rassie is having talks with Habana.
Maak die Bulle almal Stormers.
@McLovin (Comment 5) : i would not mind, but i doubt it strongly!!
@McLovin (Comment 5) :
LOL
If Pienaar reads this you are dead meat!
@willa (Comment 6) : Have to agree. I’d be very very very surprised if Habana signs for WP. Makes no sense.
But maybe he wants more game time with the world’s best 13. 😈
@Big Fish (Comment 7) : After the Bulls’ win on Saturday he’s probably still in a holding cell somewhere. 🙂
Hi Everyone!!
Another Great weekend!!
Griquas were very unlucky not to get that one in the bag!! I am very impressed with Jonathan Mokuena and Egon Seconds…what a magnificant try that was!! 2 exciting players in my book! (One thing I notices this weekedn is that it seems we lack seriously in the development of players in ALL positions…seems that there is a concentration on players of colour on Wing, there is some front row blokes, very little flanks and a few scrummies and Fullback…I’d like to see that change!!) Hopefully I have not overstepped the line with that comment..
Well done Sharkies!! The game actually started to bore me …JUST KIDDING!!!
AND I NEED TO SHARE WITH YOU, AS I AM BURSTING WITH PRIDE…
My school’s Under 15 and Under 19 teams won their semi-s and ar through to the Beeld trophy’s Finals – So Christiana is gonna ROCK this weekend!!
The under 19’s won there semi 49-3 and the U/ 15 18-17. I need to add that 8 of the original 15 was down with swine flu – so replacements made up the team – the scrummie was a St 5 (grade 7) lighty!! So – i think a job well done!!!
🙂
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 10) : Icey, that comment is borderline, but we’ll let it slide 🙂
@willa (Comment 3) : it’s never closed 🙂
@McLovin (Comment 4) : someone should tell this journo that… sounds like he needed to change his undies after the game.
@McLovin (Comment 8) :
I dont think Habs have all that much left in him…maybe he’s negotiating his retirement package… 😈
Piet was definitely at the Bulls game. An unnamed spectator chucked brandy & coke in Willie Roos’ face as he walked off the field. 😆
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 13) : check out the article I just wrote
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 10) :
Well done on your team’s performance.
@robdylan (Comment 11) :
You realise that if Salmonoid sees this he is cry “Hypocricy” with tears in his eyes again. 😈
@McLovin (Comment 14) : no no – that spectator was pissed off cos he felt Roos had given the Bulls the game. Piet was the oke who offered Roos his own Brannas at half time…
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 10) : u can be glad their not playing my school that also made the finals, for the big schools 😈 😈 , lekke monnas
@robdylan (Comment 17) : Oh yes, that’s right. 😆
I like how specific they are. It wasn’t just a drink, it was brandy & coke.
@willa (Comment 18) : you a Monnas boy? What year?
@McLovin (Comment 19) : Roos knows his Polisiekoffie, clearly.
@willa (Comment 18) :
I actually think they should take the Winners of all the devisions and make them play each other – I think it might be very entertaining…and maybe a guy from a small school can also get bought by Monnas!! 😈
No Seriously – I’d love to see how the small school’s fair against the macro schools..
@robdylan (Comment 20) : 2002, with alberts, walter venter,straatkat van zyl!
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 21) : that does sound like a good showing, and they do love buying, we even had gyus from durban in the team!!
@willa (Comment 22) : so you’re good mates with Alberts? 🙂
ja, lost a touch a little bit since last year, dont know if i told u, he used to be my flyhalf
@willa (Comment 25) : you’re shitting me! Flyhalf?
@willa (Comment 25) :
Were you the ball?? 😆
yes he wasnt that big then or quick,but had a very good boot
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 27) : 😆 no i was centre/wing/fullback/ and he was my flyhalf, and under 16 i pulled a craig burden and moved to hooker for tvl finals 😛
@willa (Comment 28) : wow…
Can you ask him if he’ll do an exclusive interview with us? 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 30) : i can try!!!!
@willa (Comment 29) :
Utility back??? 😉
@willa (Comment 31) : thanks!
@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 32) : yip, but i liked playing everywhere, but not hooker thats really a shitty one,i only enjoy playing hooker off the field 😆
@willa (Comment 34) :
@willa (Comment 34) : don’t we all 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 36) :

@Prof. Ice Babe(Super Girl) (Comment 37) : *whistles*
