Although Johann Muller has been cleared to start for the Sharks against Griquas this weekend, fullback Stefan Terblanche will continue to lead the team. Argentinian flyhalf Juan Hernández has not yet recovered from an ankle injury picked up two weeks ago.
The side shows a number of changes to the team that beat the Lions last week, most caused by the withdrawal of the Tri-Nations Boks. Wiehahn Herbst starts at tighthead prop, with Pat Cilliers and Deon Carstens bracketed at loosehead prop. Both players are struggling with injury and whichever is deemed “less crocked” on Saturday morning will start in the number 1 jersey. Muller is back to partner Steven Sykes in the second row, while Keegan Daniel takes over from Ryan Kankowski at number 8.
Last week’s halfbacks, Charl McLeod and Monty Dumond have been retained, while Andries Strauss moves into the number 12 jersey in place of the injured Riaan Swanepoel. Waylon Murray gets a long-awaited start at outside centre, with Chris Jordaan replacing Springbok Odwa Ndungane at right wing.
Justin Downey comes onto the bench as loose forward cover this week, while another youngster, 19 year-old fullback Patrick Lambie will also get a chance to impress off the bench. There’s a slight chance that Rory Kockott might be fit to occupy the number 20 jersey, but if this is not the case, the Cronjé twins will again both be on the bench.
Sharks v Griquas

(*) Denotes Sharks Currie Cup debut

not too bad , but i still worry with so many changes
it will effect the rythumn of the team, will the ball get past strauss??
@sharks_lover (Comment 1) : let’s hope Monty knows how the skip pass works π
There were bound to be changes. It’s a very good defensive centre combo anyway. Also not too worried about the front row. I prefer Herbst to Cilliers at tighthead and having Joe back is a real bonus
Nice one for Pat Lambie. Saw a replay of the Under21 match over the weekend. He was impressive… GO WAYLON!
@robdylan (Comment 2) : true rob , i hope patric gets a chance , maybe have stefan move into inside center later in the game
better as a ist game in the big league if lambie comes on let it be where he will feel at home
this is those i can remember being away from the sharks team right now thats 8 1st choice backline players , of whom 3 are flyhalves or more?????
5 are 1st choice forwards of whom 4 are front row

steyn anywhere in backline but scrummy
cockott scrummy and brawler for those looking for shit lol
hernandez,like steyn
@sharks_lover (Comment 4) : send him in at 12… let’s see what he’s made of π
Go Sharks!
Go Waylon!
I see no one’s commented on ST keeping the captaincy. π What’s all your opinions?
And it’s ArgentINE!! π
WTH is McLeod starting ahead of the Rocket?? π―
@klempie (Comment 9) : we’ve already covered this
@klempie (Comment 10) : rocket is unlikely to play at all
@klempie (Comment 10) :
Do you see the boy play?
Great pass, plenty of gas, and brings an educated left boot to the game.
@robdylan (Comment 11) :
Some people never learn. π
π
Glad to see ST retain the captaincy, will it last though. Im stressed about the game. Rockett and Magic, better get fit soon. Go Sharks!!
@robdylan (Comment 11) : @Big Fish (Comment 13) : Yeh. ROB doesn’t!
@klempie (Comment 10) : injured.
i am bit worried – would like to see more experience side against the LOG LEADERS.
as for Lambie – well done, but would rather see the youngster against Boland or Lepards first.
Hope the Sharks are not underestimating Griquas.
@klempie (Comment 8) : I actually think sharks are doing better under oupa. Not a great fan of Muller as a leader. But he will be back as captain next week – must be just easing him from the injury.
@klempie (Comment 8) : thats cos i haven’t been on the site yet. i have said before johan captaincy is dodge. maybe plum has realised that. let johan focus on what he does best and hand the captaincy to someone that doesn’t do anything but catch and kick.
and when john gets back hand the reigns to a real captain.
@rekinek (Comment 16) :
We have no reason to underestimate the Griquas – they’ve been playing well – and were unlucky to lose to the Bulls.
Very physical side – and they play with great pace – it’s going to be a challenge.
This is going to be a very tough game. The Sharks team lost a bit of shine without the Boks and with the injuries.
@try time (superrugbyβs kryptonite is SANZAR) (Comment 19) : spot on. John needs to be made Sharks captain again, asap
Off the topic, apologies here, but had to laugh. We were talking about the cape media, read Gavin Rich, with regards the Dup brothers being lured to WP and the denials coming out of WP. On SuperSport, Rich’s Guest column reads:
“You just need a quick glance at the Cape newspaper headlines for proof that the rugby silly season that used to start in December and extend through to the start of the following winter these days begins on 1 July.”
Um Gavin, you do know that people think of you as pretty much de facto “the Cape newspapers”????
@robdylan (Comment 22) : and play for 80minutes in knock off games;-)
@Baldrick (Comment 23) : plus this entire sentence is far too long – i actually hardly read this guy anymore.
@Baldrick (Comment 23) : yeah – he’s the guy that started the rumour!
@robdylan (Comment 26) : that whole article is just a rehash of the one I wrote a few days ago anyway.
So how long is the IRB still going to take regarding the Armband Saga π Probably good news for the Boks cause there is obviously no consesus else we would have heard the result by now.
PROOOOOOOOOOOOOVIIIIIIIIIIINCE!!!!!!!!!
@Pokkel (Comment 28) : I think this is a good indication that they’re going to drop the whole thing.
@McLovin (Comment 29) : Is Grant playing or not?
@Pokkel (Comment 31) : Not a clue.
I read this morning that Ricky Januarie had a baby. And everybody just thought he was fat.
@McLovin (Comment 29) : starting early? π
@McLovin (Comment 33) : class!
**Breaking news**
The man involved in the Willie Roos incident has confirmed that it was only coke. No brandy was involved. π
@McLovin (Comment 33) :
π
So much for blaming it on the pies then…
@McLovin (Comment 36) : Also, apparently his wife was NOT impressed.
@McLovin (Comment 36) :
Hey…Funny Friday starring McLovin is back…
@McLovin (Comment 33) : π
@blackshark (Comment 39) : Hi!!…..I’m here too…watching you all!!!
man, but there’s just no news out there at all today
@McLovin (Comment 38) : π³ I sort of feel it may have been the other way round in our family…me doing the “throwing” & my husband “not impressed”!!!
Can’t stand the man π
@McLovin (Comment 33) :
π
@blackshark (Comment 37) :
Blame it on the p-p-p-pie. π³
@robdylan (Comment 42) : Make like Gavin Rich and just make your own news π
OK how about discussing the Aus NZ match?
@Big Fish (Comment 44) : Blame it on the p-p-p-ie and alcohol…..
@robdylan (Comment 42) :
No news BUT I have a question: Better to have a captain in the scrum or better to have him in backline????
My thoughts for people to expand on…..Full back….has more opportunity to see the full picture??
Forward in the scrum…nearly always on the ground tackling or being tackled…doen’t get to see the full picture??
Then, of course you have the captain who, through his shear personality, is a great leader, and it doesn’t matter where he plays…?
@McLovin (Comment 33) : π
@Pokkel (Comment 45) : if you like!
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 47) : I’ve π always preferred a captain in the pack, because that way he’s always close to where the action is.
So many people online…..so little to say π
@robdylan (Comment 51) : you need a captain in the pack, general in the back
@robdylan (Comment 51) : I would think purely from a positional perspective scrumhalf is perfect…..cheeky coming from an ex scrumhalf
@rekinek (Comment 55) : Who would WASTE brandy
@willa (Comment 53) : OK…define “captain” and “general” in rugby terms π
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 47) : I like this thinking but then again your fullback is often on the other side of the field – may not see too much (from the flat angle).
@Salmonoid (Comment 50) : π
I watched a bit of a 1994 Springbok vs Baabaas game last night on ESPNC and Jouba was brilliant. The way he would just ‘appear’ in the backline. He was brilliant at joining the backline and breaking the opp line. There is one player I wouldn’t mind having back in the Bok team
@Pokkel (Comment 52) :

@Pokkel (Comment 56) :
i feel my freedom of expression curtailed
@Pokkel (Comment 45) : Go Oz?
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 57) : captain to lead, and general to organize, like john smit, good leader and motivator, butch and barritt were good organizers, getting the defense and attack on the way!
@rekinek (Comment 58) : Ok…reason for this train of thought…played hockey in goal….could see everything…often weak points in both my team & opposition but could not communicate until half time….but in rugby…backline players are nearly always up with the play,in defence so can communicate if necessary….Also rugby has a lot more “time outs” when players can get in a huddle….
@McLovin (Comment 62) : it may be better to support a home team otherwise the team winning away may get too confident. go blacks (I think they play in NZ)
@willa (Comment 63) : So who says…”Look chaps, the game plan is NOT working…here’s what we can do to sort things…”??
@McLovin (Comment 62) : I agree . Go Oz. Now for a little more detail on why please π
@rekinek (Comment 65) : uuuhhhh no the playing in Sydney. Go OZ
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 64) : I still think scrumhalf is perfect
@Pokkel (Comment 67) : Better for the Boks. Plus I like seeing Graham Henry lose.
@Pokkel (Comment 69) : How many of those guys can be called leaders? They are for the most part too “cheeky”! Only one I know of in SA rugby, that would it the bill, is FduP.
@McLovin (Comment 70) : Here, here π
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 64) : i was bit worried about the size of the field and thought that perhaps flyhalf or centre would be better.
actually maybe scrumhalf of FL because they are close to both backs and forwards.
@Pokkel (Comment 69) : FL may be better to assess the situation because SH is too involved (or should I say – should be involved), but if you absolutely insist π
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 66) : well it all starts up front,so the captain, but i suppose its all about good communication between players and coach,at the boks its get the ball to morney and kick it away, and if that doesnt work pass it to morney so he can kick it away, π
@Pokkel (Comment 68) : so what was I thinking picking ABs in SB. I must be loosing it.
So go OZ!
@rekinek (Comment 75) : NZ is basically an Aus town so it’s an easy mistake to make. π
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 71) : and he was not particularly successful with the Bulls last year – but this I guess not his fault really.
@willa (Comment 74) : in such set up a Fullback (or any other back from 11 onwards)could truly concentrate on captaincy as he would not be disturbed by necessity of playing
@McLovin (Comment 76) : the one they keep all sheep π
@rekinek (Comment 78) : yes you can get them nice chairs on the 22, with a 2 way radio,maybe some lights like rassie π
So what’s on tv tonight?
@McLovin (Comment 81) : you can watch the Bulls stuff the Leopards, if you have the stomach for that sort of thing
@willa (Comment 74) :
@robdylan (Comment 82) : Are they televising it π―
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 84) : I don’t know, to be honest. Assumed they would be
@robdylan (Comment 85) : Yes they are πΏ
@Me2 aka Mama Shark (Comment 71) : I was talking purely from a positional perspective not character.
@rekinek (Comment 77) : Fourie du Preez didn’t enjoy captaincy one bit. He is not an option IMO
I have two different makes of staplers on my desk. Both take exactly the same size staples (from the same box even). But one of them can staple a lot more pages together than the other. β
@McLovin (Comment 88) : aliens. Only possible explanation
@Pokkel (Comment 87) : Yeah.. I realise that…don’t you find that most scrummies have more or less the same character traits π so the position is great but the characters not so good π
@McLovin (Comment 88) : π
@robdylan (Comment 89) : The truth is out there.
@robdylan (Comment 89) :
@McLovin (Comment 88) :
BTW what happened to your previous avatar – are you undercover now? π
@McLovin (Comment 88) : Why do you have 2 staplers? π
Who changed the smileys? π
@Rahul (Comment 93) : I like to staple.
@rekinek (Comment 92) : Hey Rekin… top of the log!!! Not bad for a chick
@McLovin (Comment 95) : π
