Sharks tighthead Wiehahn Herbst suffered a season-ending injury against Western Province on Saturday.
The young prop dislocated his right ankle, as well as fracturing his fibula. He will need to undergo an operation to repair the damage and will be out of the game for at least four months. It’s a cruel blow to a player who was just starting to make his mark on the senior stage.
Herbst will be back in time for next year’s Super 14 and should push hard for a position in the Sharks squad.
The injury leave John Plumtree with a bit of a headache, as he’ll have to persevere with Pat Cilliers at tighthead for the next two games until his Bok contingent of Jannie du Plessis and John Smit returns. Cilliers has looked far from comfortable in the number 3 shirt this season and one wouldn’t blame Plumtree if he rather opted to throw another rookie, like promising Under 21 prop Julian Redelinghuys, into the deep end against Boland.

oh well another one bites the dust what has happened to all the props that we had maybe rudi can find us one
robbie harris is here in the UK now. We could have used him
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Maybe we can get BJ back for a game or 2 cos the way i saw it Deon is stuffed and needs a break and now with Wiehahn’s break the cupboard is very bare
Pity, he looked the part. Scrummed well.
@Fattmann (Comment 1) : Bloem has an airport, he could fly there, buy a prop and bring him home to start on Saturday.
@Loosehead (Comment 4) :
True, but sadly due to the lack of interest in going to Bloem many of the flights have been cut to there and Kimberley. I think it will have to be a Roadlink bus to the stasie.
This heading makes it sound as if he was banned 🙄
@Fattmann (Comment 1) : just to let u knw he is doing great and fit to play u are going to see he is going to play super 14 next year and springboks so watch out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MAXED (Comment 7) : welcome to the site, MAXED. And yes, you’re right. Wiehahn is a superb talent and I really hope he pushes Jannie DuP all the way
@robdylan (Comment 8) : he is real good watch him from skool days his brother is also realy good he is starting next year at the acdemy at the sharks!
@MAXED (Comment 9) : really? What position does his brother play? And what’s his name?
Both props and hooker? he was injured in his under 16 year and this year so he couldnt play cravenweek but he did play for old boys 1st team last year when he was only 16 turning 17?
@MAXED (Comment 11) : nice one… am I correct in assuming you know these lads personally, or are you just a fan?
Must say, in the limited dealings I’ve had with Wiehahn Herbst, I’ve found him to be an incredibly pleasant young man. Tighthead props tend to be the most down-to-earth people.
Knw them personally his brother is realy talented hard player u/16 he fractured his neck but got healed miricale and this year he got acl reconstructure
Is the younger brother Armand Herbst?
yeah ?
@robdylan (Comment 14) : I have just answered my own question 🙂
how do mean ?
@robdylan (Comment 16) : I found a news story about him… nothing rugby related, actually… something about how the headmaster at his school in Balito had only pretended that they were correctly registered with the IEB
yeah that was a big stoyie hey but he got his matric now he pased so glad for the guy? where u from?
@MAXED (Comment 19) : me? You’re gonna laugh. I live in the UK now, but i was born in Pretoria

@MAXED (Comment 21) : you could say that, yes 🙂 Sharks rugby is my passion, that’s for sure.
