The Sharks are apparently negotiating with Perpignan’s Steve Meyer to help them out in this year’s Super 14. Meyer last played for the Sharks in 2006.
The 25-year-old flyhalf is a product of Kearsney College and represented KZN at age-group and Vodacom Cup level from 2004 on. After a superb Vodacom Cup season in 2006, in which Meyer’s absence for the final proved instrumental in the Wildebeest losing to the Valke, Meyer went on to accumulate two Currie Cup caps.
One of those came in the unfortunate away loss to Griquas, as Dick Muir’s ill-fated “dual squad” system saw its ass. Meyer, along with a host of other young players, was shipped out not long afterwards.
He has since established himself at Perpignan and is apparently playing good rugby. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.

I reckon we should bring back Spedders as well
Could be good for South African rugby, maybe we’ll find a gem. I did hear something about another international flyhalf being drafted in, I guess it was just a rumour?
@robdylan (Comment 1) : Yeah, and BJ, Barritt, Butch and Frans…
Who?
What is Butch doing?
@MerckZ (Comment 2) : they were looking… guess they didn’t find.
Could be worse, could be Conrad Barnard!
@Loosehead (Comment 3) : trying to figure out which way his knee is supposed to bend
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Was having delusions of hope; thought Jonny Wilkinson would like to ply his trade in the Southern Hemisphere for a season. But I guess he’s happy (and fully contracted up to his earballs) in France…
Hmmm…. this from Rugby365…
Australian flyhalf Scott Daruda, who left behind a Super 14 career with Western Force last year to play for Agen, is quitting the French club after failing to hold down a regular first team spot.
Romain Sola and Francois Gelez have been favoured by coaches Christian Lanta and Christophe Deylaud as Agen have moved to the top of the French second division.
Daruda, 23, is a former Australian Under-19 and Under-21 international.
Rob, I know you rate Swannie, but seeing as we’re a bit short on depth in that position, would it be worth our while to have a look-see at Grant Rees? A bit of a one-dimensional battering ram, I know, but a relatively experienced battering ram…
I know! Why don’t the Sharks just hold onto their flyhalves when they’re youngsters?
@MerckZ (Comment 8) : no pace and no hands… Sorry, not a Rees fan. A poor man’s Trevor Halstead.
@CapeShark (Comment 9) : crazy idea 🙂
@MerckZ (Comment 8) : where is he now anyway? Also somewhere in France?
@robdylan (Comment 12) : answering my own question, Grant Rees is currently playing for Montpellier in France
@MerckZ (Comment 8) : You are not serious, that guy give me the creeps, please no Boogeyman 😥
@Charlie (Comment 14) : Haha, if he does that to you, imagine what he does to the opposition?
@MerckZ (Comment 15) : never forget Morne Steyn’s face when he dropped a ball in the Bulls in-goal area, only to see Rees score at his feet 🙂
@MerckZ (Comment 15) : He’s rugby playing gives me the creeps, the opposition will find it funny 😈
Hope steve comes back, it seems like spedding has been playing fullback recently but it would still be great to have him back, i wonder how many flyhalves the presence of butch james has cost the sharks
@war1 (Comment 18) : not really butch… more like all the foreign mercs.
hallo 😛
@JarsonX (Comment 20) : it seems ive got working now 😎
@JarsonX (Comment 21) : well that IS good news. All has been just superbly peachy here in the last 24 hours 🙂
@MerckZ (Comment 6) :
Wilko wouldn’t last through a training session in a S14 team. He is good but he is made of brittle glass.
@MerckZ (Comment 6) :
He is one odd duck and a fragile one to boot. I don’t think he would last very long in such a physical environment
@KSA Shark © (Comment 23) :
@Milissa (Comment 24) :

@Milissa (Comment 50) : you watch top 14, right? You seen anything of Meyer?
Not too much but,USAP has an HCup game this weekend and he’s been named to start, so I’ll try to catch it live or one of the replays to take a better look at him.
USAP were the French champs last year and that is definitely not an easy feat to achieve w/o a consistent and in form pairing at 9 & 10. Aside from being rather perturbed that Toulouse didn’t make it to the final last year, I do remember being impressed that USAP made it to the top of the heap.

I am going to be clever this year and wait until the last moment for the teams to be announced.
happy birthday PB. Hope you had a wonderful day 😛
Here’s an interesting little comment that was made on Rugby 365.
“Hernadez is not injured , he is in perfect health , he ducked to Argentina with his girlfreind , the conumdrum the Sharks are sitting with is , do you take him back or do you fire him or do you take him back , from an employers view ” chase him ” from an Sharks point of view we need him , although Monty Dummond had n brilliant C/C maybe he need’s another chance .
But info is the Sharks dont want him back .
This is an very difficult decision if it was me i will forgive and forget . But also discipline is an factor ?. Lionel Pretorius”
Steve Meyer was gaga today against Northanpton, was he actually on the park, also see a few glimpses of former Cheetah flyer, Phillip Burger.
the more cover at ten the better. we all saw last year how kak the sharks were when they tried to put a fullback at 10. i reckon monty deserves a chance. let monty start, with ruan inside him, if he is looking shaky, you can always sub him. but i was impressed with his cc form. it shows the value of keeping players match fit. look at how kak he was when he was expected to just step in at the end of last years s14, but after a few games he showed great form.
I`m with Try time here, Give Monty a Chance!
He wasn`t bad in cc last year.
Since Ruan is injured though who will they play at 9? Hopefully Charl.
There`s always Lambie as well. Young and too small now I know but he`ll improve, just like Monty did.
Watched Meyer over the weekend and was not impressed. Missed a penalty kick, was yellow carded and then pulled in the 47th minute of the second half. I felt like he was just going through the motions of playing instead of playing to make an impact for his team.
@Milissa (Comment 61) : oops. Maybe he cooked his goose with that performance.
Hehehe, funny to see this knowing what we know now…hectic
