Strauss impersonated on FaceBook

Cheetahs hooker Adriaan Strauss is apparently taking legal action over a fake FaceBook profile set up in his name.

It seems that a bunch of no-gooders set up the profile and managed to convince a good few people that it was genuine. Strauss himself apparently has no interest in the social media platform. I wonder if he thinks the earth is flat too…

There is concern that the player’s reputation may have suffered some damage as a result of the profile, which apparently created the impression that he was somewhat promiscuous. I guess there’s a warning here to all of us. Be careful when interacting with anyone famous on any social media site, because the checks that they do to ensure genuine identity are woefully inadequate.

Also be aware that FaceBook accounts can be quite easily hacked. I know for a fact that one of the Sharks players is currently struggling to retrieve his (genuine) account from hackers who are now masquerading as him.

  • That’s why I’m not on facebook.

  • Also every time you upload photos to farcebook you agree to making them public property, thus anyone can use them royalty free. So any tom, dick or ad agency can use them in a campaign and you get squat… farcebook’s a joke, the moral of farcebook is to keep your private life off it, which kind of defeats the point…

  • I wonder if this will start the ball rolling and we’ll see a whole bunch of other fakes being reported.

  • @Milissa (Comment 8) : I guess it’s possible… But this seems more like a malicious thing, or maybe a prank gone wrong, but definitely orchestrated by somebody who knows Strauss personally. He’s just not high-profile enough for there to be any other reason for it.

Nobody THAT high profile is really on FB anyway, not as a user.
