Barney takes the reigns

In a sure sign that SOMEBODY is Durban has their thinking caps firmly on, John Smit has been appointed captain of the Sharks for the 2010 Super 14 season.

There has been much speculation about the captaincy of late, since Smit (the Bok skipper) has not captained the Natal side since 2007. Johann Muller was preferred for last year’s ill-fated Super 14 campaign, while more recently, veteran fullback Stefan Terblanche lead the team in the Currie Cup.

John Plumtree today ended the doubt by confirming Smit as the captain – the best decision he could possibly have made. The Sharks have looked in sore need of leadership over the last year and Smit has held aloft every major trophy in world rugby (except the Super 14). There could not be a better man for the job.

The major challenge on Plumtree’s hands will be ensuring his captain can start every game, while still affording playing time to the du Plessis brothers, Bismarck and Jannie, who compete with Smit for the number 2 and 3 jerseys respectively.

Welcome back, Barney! It’s so good to see you back where you belong!

  • @Greg (Comment 10) : With the RWC on next year, I think we are going to see a lot of guys returning. Wickus is the first big name, but there are sure to be others.

    Is Sowerby too old?

  • Mmmm so if Barney is captain does this mean I have to go pick up Bismarck and Jannie at Cape Town International later today? Wasn`t there some stipulation that they will play otherwise they come to the Magic MotherCity?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 21) : When Smit first went to France, and Bissie and Jannie signed their contracts with the Sharks, there was much rumour that the contracts included guaranteed playing time for both players, as well as other assurances. When there was talk of bringing back Smit to Durban, the rumour mills worked overtime saying that the duPlessis contracts prevented Smit’s return. Well Smit returned, and playing time for both Jannie and Bissie suffered as a result. So clearly these rumours were just that, unfounded, and most likely not a shred of truth to them.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 23) :

I agree. We have never heard a word from Either of the Du Plessis brothers regarding unhappiness with their playing time.

An as someone said elsewhere Bismarck is only prolonging his carrer at both the Sharks and the Boks by playing less rugby so why should he be bitching about it.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 27) : well, with John there, this bullshit of losing to the minnows will stop. That’s already 10 more points than last year. 12 if you count the missed bonus points against the Lions and Highlanders
