Bissie and boet linked to Rebels

An article in The Australian newspaper on Saturday has suggested that Sharks and Bok front row duo, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, may be eyeing a move to the Melbourne Rebels ahead of the 2011 Super 15.

The paper claims that the pair tried to negotiate a package deal with the Western Force some time ago, but were unable to seal the deal, due to Australia’s foreign player restrictions meaning that the team could never field both players (neither being eligible for Wallaby selection). Jannie’s desire to move to Australia to further his medical career would apparently be a strong motivating factor and since we know that playing together is a strong motivator for the brothers, Melbourne might make an ideal destination.

The Rebels have been given a special dispensation to field up to 10 foreign players next year, in the interests of assembling a competitive team quickly.

Now, it’s hardly news to anybody that the Dup brothers aren’t exactly loving their time in Durban. Their dream of forming a regular starting partnership for the Sharks (adnd I guess the Boks too) took somewhat of a nosedive when John Smit returned to Durban in 2008 and while the latter was used mainly off the bench at first, his elevation to squad captain this year seems to have been the last straw for Bismarck and his brother. Fact is, wherever Smit plays, be it hooker or tighthead, he’s going to be doing one of the brothers out of a starting spot.

If rumours are to be believed, the pair exhausted virtually every other option before resigning with the Sharks late last year. The Bulls were initially interested, but pulled out later – perhaps as a result of the notoriously tricky temperaments involved. The Australian article links the duo to the Lions as well, but we’ve been lead to believe that Dick Muir is not really keen on having the brothers in his squad either. Their reputation for being disruptive to team morale seems pretty far reaching – whether it’s true or not.

Sharks fans will be in two minds about this latest development. Based on current form, while I’m sure there aren’t too many who’s be sad to see Jannie move on, Bismarck would be a huge loss. The young man was simply immense against the Waratahs. If only there were some way to split the two without causing fallout of truly atomic proportions…

  • Great news! Leave them right there so the boeties can sommer save on air tickets!!

  • Jannie Dup has got to be one of the most overrated props to ever play for SA.

He has ONE good season in 2005 while at the Cheetahs but since then he has not done much imho.

His boet is a different story altogether. Losing Bismarck will be a big blow – best hooker in the world by far.

  • If Bis and Jannie do go it can be seen as a blessing in disguise!!! John is for sure better at 2 than at 3. If john captains world cup side the only place he can play is 2, if we don’t want to get scrummed. Bj or wp nel have to be our two best options at tighthead if we want a solid scrum at the world cup. Jannie scrums average, gives away a shit load of penalties and can’t catch or pass to save his life. I am sorry, but the truth hurts. Burden offers alot coming off the bench and cooper is a man for the future. Herbst scrums way better than jannie anyway. I hope they do leave to be honest, it will finally allow us to name the same front row every week. But, while they are still here we should still support them as usual. Anyone in the black and white deserves to be supported.

    Weekend Preview Sharks:

Would keep same starting line-up and maybe rotate two. Deysel in for Alberts, Beast in for Deon. To be honest i might even put Kockett back at scrummie, Ruan is not mentally right at the moment, he does not know what to do!! Goode played well when we had front foot ball and he kicked us into some really good positions, but mainly he makes very little stupid mistakes. I would expect an improvement from last week even tough we should have won; brumbies also looked seriously flat against the lions. I think the Sharks once again have a good chance to start winning this weekend. We must just go and take it! Gooo Sharks.

  • Gotta say – I know Bismark can be a great player (I have defended him too many times to count)but the petulant behaviour of both brothers is evident on the field…it seems that they take it in turns to see who can get a yellow card. Really! as if the team isn’t struggling enough as it is, or as if the fans haven’t had their hearts broken enough yet….Our boys have more class and skill than to deliberately shoulder charge or trip the other guys up.

We can choose to ignore everything that isn’t completely cast in stone, but in that case, we’ll be posting at most one article every three days and the site will soon die. Meanwhile, the conjecture, rumours and opinions will simply be aired elsewhere.

A souce close to the team told me this was utter bull and that they got along just fine.

So I take any rumours with a pinch of salt.

Players on the sidelines or periphery always have an axe to grind because they are not getting a chance to play.
