Sharks XV tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst is on his way to New Zealand.

Ok, glad you clicked to read more, because the sad truth is, I don’t actually know any more than that! The rest is all speculation, but my assumption is that Herbst is one his way to join the Sharks touring squad.

A further assumption is that Deon Carstens, who is reported to be struggling with a knee injury, will play no further part in the tour and that Herbst has been called up as his replacement. Whether the addition of a tighthead (whereas Carstens is more of a loosehead theses days) says anything about the form of John Smit, or the discipline issues besetting Jannie du Plessis, remains to be seen.

Whatever the case, Wiehahn, it’s good to have you where you belong. Do your best and we’re behind you 1000%. Expect young Julian Redelinghuys to move up and occupy the vacant Sharks XV number 3 jersey this weekend.

Obviously, there’ll be more details on this one as they’re confirmed.

  • i can now confirm that herbst is flying over to replace carstens

  • Why fly him over if he will not be used?

  • Well done! And good call as well. Jannie can trip waiters in the hotel during the game until he learns to behave himself.

  • The question is, will he be used? Or is he just backup for the reserves?

I don’t see him getting a run, unfortunately. Unless Plum has decided to make John a permanent hooker again and then we’ll see Bissie on the bench more and I don’t like that idea either.

  • Hi guys

We are all down. Maybe this link will remind you of some good old days

In 1996 the Natal Sharks played Transvaal in the Currie Cup Final at Ellis Park before a capacity crowd (70,000) that included me.
What a day! Tons of beer and I maintain I remained sober.

Jeremy Thompson scored the 1st try and β€œRoyce” scored 2 more.

Joubert’s 1st try was the special one to me. His 2nd try was lovely to watch but Natal had the game almost in the bag by then.

Look at the way Honiball (no 10) runs his lines and sucks in the defence.

Then look at the way Joubert reads the game and hits the gaps at speed. Some people have argued that with modern defenses players like Joubert would find it difficult. I say that Joubert would could find a way through any defense.

    Bring back Jouba (-;

  • I watched most of the XV game against province, unfortunately didn’t take a good look at Herbst (he was playing i think?). How good is this oke? If he got thrown into the super 14 now, would he be able to give a good kiwi or oz front row a hard time?

  • great ,awesome, fantastic news. I watched Herbst 2 weeks ago at newlands….he is a real tighthead….does the primary function so well…namely scrumming. He and Cilliers at loosehead really took it to a powerful WP team….i think this is a very positive sign….Sharks need to play him…..

maybe now they will shelve the smit at 3 scenario once and for all…..

thank the merciful angels for small mercies.

Get front foot ball and watch the sharks turn here season around…..

    i am very happy!

  • So we’ve now got a very expensive, special delivery mobile tackle bag for practice sessions?

Maybe he’ll teach Jannie how to scrum….one canst only wish.

  • @Biscuit (Comment 14) : Hey Biscuit, I was also at that game!

The atmosphere was awesome and we had a great jol afterwards in the pub right outside the stadium, which I think was called the Lion’s Head?

We did millions of Mexican waves and drank some horrible (at the time not bad) beer concoction from a replica Currie Cup that was passed around the place.

You’re spot on about Jouba – CLASS!
