Big Bulls planning retirement parties

Various reports have surfaced over the last few weeks linking the Bulls “big 3” with moves away from Loftus after next year’s World Cup.

The latest development sees Bakkies Botha once again linked to French side RC Toulon. You may recall the huge stink kicked up back in 2008 when Botha allegedly “signed” with Toulon, despite having an enforceable Bulls contract valid through 2011. The courts rejected Botha’s case and he was duly forced to see out his contract, but it now appears as though he may be back in negotiation with his old pal Mourad Boudjellal, with a view to joining the newly-promoted Top 14 side after the 2011 World Cup.

Fellow Bulls and Bok lock Victor Matfield has been linked to a possible coaching job with the NSW Waratahs in Sydney after the World Cup, while scrumhalf Fourie du Preez will head to Japan to play for Suntory Sungoliath at that stage.

There appears to be a fair amount of moving around planned on the Aussie coaching scene, by the by. Good old Jake White is being linked to both the Force and the Waratahs, while there is speculation in the “WA Today” newspaper that current Force supremo John Mitchell is being headhunted for a provincial coaching job in South Africa. Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice would say…

  • well that is news wonder what the bulls team will look like after the WC 🙂

  • I reckon there are going to be a fair amount of retirements after the W/C, Bakkies and Fourie are starters. John Smit will pack it in. Talk of Habanna heading to France again. Wonder if big Vic will carry on, he must be thinking of retiring, but I heard that he is quite interested in getting involved at the Bulls as a coach, as well.

  • Well if we be realistic none of the senior playes will be around after 2011. I think we will see a big exodus of players leaving. Not only from the Bulls but Sharks and Stormers too.

Think these players will all be doing something else after 2011. Maybe rugby or into cooching or whatever.

Smit, Matfield, Bakkies, FdP, Burger, Juan, Bissy and Jannie. Really none of them will continue they will all have played in 2 world cups. Ruan might head off too. Who knows he was also in the last world cup.

Not only will Matfield be wanting to go to Oz but probably many others to play in the Rebels. Plenty will leave next year. Going to Oz is not for the money, let us be realistic. It is to get out of SA and start a new life. I wish them well. All of them that get to start a new life. If I had young children I would be doing the same.

  • @Chaz (Comment 8) : Morning Chaz, Yes there will be plenty new players in after wc. Don’t worry about the Bulls they have themselves covered in all positions, they have youngsters playing now that will take over once the older players leave. The way it should be done at all unions. That is why we need to start playing our youngsters now. After next year we don’t want to start from scratch. 😉

  • @Just a Fan (Comment 16) : I don’t think so. Read a blogger saying that on Rugby365 but really don’t think so. Have no idea really. but don’t see it happen. The same blogger also said BJ would be back for the CC.

    Is the boss with?

Why I’m asking is because I wanted your oppinion on the reffing.
I only caught the last 20 minutes and wished I had’nt. It was a total embarrasment how one sided the reffing was, so much so that it started coming across as intentional. Pro was the ref and he missed a lot but to me the main culprit was the touch judge who made some outrageous calls. I really felt sorry for the Pampas 15 because they were getting shafted by the officials, they realised it and so did their supporters.
And to top it all the WP no7 entertained himself in those 20 minutes with the liberal use of the boot and punching in the open on 2 occassions (dirtiest player I have seen in years) The officials did not see a thing

It was so bad that even Robbie Kempson was cringing.

  • I see Matfield has bought a 50% Share in the Boland Rugby union’s business arm. So if he does coach after retirement it will probabaly be there.

He can coach the locks to play flyhalf and in one swoop solve all our flyhalf problems in the country. 😛

I’m actually with the boss. 😛 She is here for a conference and the kids and I are just along for the holiday. 😀

No I didn’t see it, but then I wouldn’t be surprised, the Cape has the dirtiest club league in SA and if those players are now playing VC then it is to be expected.

Am ashamed at how refs can be biased. 🙁 If I ever ref my home team which has happened on more than one occasion then i usually over compensate and almost advantage the other team more to ensure I am not favouring my team. 😳

  • @Puma (Comment 17) : The BJ Botha story I`ll believe. Only he`s not coming back to help us in the CC, he`ll be ” rested” for Snorre.

On another note : It might be good for all of us if the Bulls lose some of their stars. Who knows, the CC might be up for contention again!
Having said that, we might lose some personnel as well so nothing would really change. . .
