Two snippets of Lions news we’ve picked up, both courtesy of the WeTalkRugby site.
The first is that former Bok winger Ray Mordt will be the Lions’ defensive coach moving forward. Mordt has apparently been working with the squad since Monday, but it’s anybody’s guess how much he’ll be able to teach them in just a week, seeing as the Lions defensive problems appear to be systematic and wide ranging.
Mordt is no stranger to coaching the Lions, having played various roles with the Union from 1994 on. Of late, he’s been helping out at Dick Muir’s Investec Rugby Academy, which may explain how he got the job.
The second piece of news is that dangerous centre Walter Venter will not be fit to face the Sharks, having hurt his knee against the Reds.

If Venter is out we’ll probably see Herkie play in his place.
They didn’t have a defensive coach ❓ ❗ Are you kidding me? Was it not clear that, that have been their main problem?
😯 😯
@rhineshark (Comment 1) : my guess is that it would probably be marius delport
sharks must rip into them in first quarter…..score eary and lions self doubt will grow.
Lions may be bottom but they have proved they can score tries against any team. Also a derby is always harder, not even Stormers got the bonus point against the Lions. Our defence must be solid, first time tackles is a must.
Go Sharks.
@rhineshark (Comment 1) : nah, cos venter’s been playing 13
Venter is actually a 12 not a 13. But they can`t really afford to drop Doppies for him.
Herkie will come in at 10 for the out of shape KC.
Delport will definately start in Venters` place and I guess they`ll
stick with Killian at fullback.
Sharks must remember Mjeveku and Chavanga are their weak links so
put a lot of little grubbers through and wait for them to fumble.
Having said that, they also know our backline is a bit of a weak link and they will look to put huge pressure on Ruan.
If you take into account Ruans` performances against local opposition that`s not a bad idea. . .
Probable Lions Team : Killian, Chavanga, Delport, Doppies, Mjeveku, Herkie, Vermaak, Clever, Wikus, Luus, Franco, Baywatch, Buys, Emslie and Heinke
You heard it here first . . .
@war1 (Comment 3) : I agree, Marius Delport must be in the mix. He probably regrets the decision to move to the Lions, he could’ve played Vodacom Cup for the Bulls & probably could’ve filled in for Jaco Pretorius during his time out.
I wonder if Wikus van Heerder is regreting his decision to move to the Lions 😆
Shouldn’t they be called the “Canned Lions”. It will go with the Coke tin.
Who is the Sharks defense coach?
@Morné (Comment 11) :
Anyone?
@Morné (Comment 12) : I don’t know to honest
@Pokkel (Comment 13) :
Seems no-one does.
Shows you how much I know of what’s what in Lions land
I got my prize for winning SB 6N 😛
A big thank you to Whindy ❗
@rekinek (Comment 16) : what was it?
@Morné (Comment 11) : must be plum, because he definitely isn’t their creative flair/attacking coach.
@try time (Comment 18) : It does explain why Dick and Plum complimented eachother well when they worked together at the Sharks.
Dont think we should go into this game being overconfident.
@try time (Comment 17) : it changed (logistics) and is Sharks Jersey ❗ 😛 and some 😎 Sharks goodies
@Treehugger (Comment 20) : you can’t overstress it.
Just like at the Sharks, you can’t really trust the team Dick announces until they run out onto the field.
Heard that the Lions super 14 side was turned over by the Vodacom side, in a 40 minute game last night!
@Bump (Comment 24) : Serious??? 😯
Earl Rose probably played for the VC team and ran holes through the S14 defence
@Pokkel (Comment 25) :
Yip
@Bump (Comment 27) : maybe this will get our friend earl to S14 side. good news indeed
@Letgo (Comment 2) : shocking isn’t it 😯 😯 😉
@Puma (Comment 5) : true look how well they played against the chiefs on their own field who would of thought the lions would of had that big score 65/72 to chiefs but from there onwards were just down hill for them 😉
@Gazman (Comment 8) : what a wonderfull pic 😆
@try time (Comment 10) : eeeeeaahhhh 😆 😉
