Gold to get the boot?

There’s never a dull moment in the circus that is professional rugby in South Africa…

An article appeared on the SuperSport website this morning, implying that the knives are out for Bok forward coach Gary Gold. If we ignore for a moment that it was written by Gavin Rich, a man who is virtually synonymous with the term “agenda”, it raises some quite interesting questions.

Peter de Villiers, it is claimed, has made a complaint to his bosses at the SA Rugby Union, to the effect that certain members of his support staff have not been supporting him (I guess that would make them just “staff”, then) and has been given assurances by SARU that the matter will be sorted out. A fair bit of extrapolation takes place from there and we somehow get to the point where Gold, allegedly, is on the verge of being booted.

The major source of unhappiness is apparently the rumours that did the rounds in the media last year that “the players/assistant coaches/ball boys/stadium cleaners are the ones REALLY coaching the team” and if the article is to be believed, de Villiers wants Gold out because he is somehow creating or aiding the perception that Springbok rugby is in a state of chaos. Gold, somewhat unsurprisingly, is flabbergasted at the suggestion that he may lose his job and believed that the relationship between him and de Villiers was fine.

That notwithstanding the fact that the head coach changed cell phone numbers without telling his assistant what the new one was. Maybe Gaz is just slow on the uptake on this one…

My take is that it would be ridiculously unfair if Gold did lose his job over this, since to my way of thinking, the rumours of strife in the camp last year were a media fabrication and nothing more – with Gold at worst an unwitting victim, if involved at all. That said, I’m yet to be convinced that he really is the best forwards coach in the land, given how rapidly the Western Province pack has improved since Matt Proudfoot took over from him and also considering the unimpressive overall form of the Bok pack, particularly in the scrums, over the last few years.

  • Was at a function last week with Gary Gold as the speaker, he said he has huge respect for Peter, but he took about 5minutes to think of the right words to use.

  • Team announced, Swannie out and Strauss in, only change. On the bench good news though, Micheal Rhodes gets his change and swannie is also there, so obviously the injury is not that bad.

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : Damnit, will Strauss once again melt under pressure as he has shown in all his past attempts at being himself in a pressure packed game?

I hope he will, but I think not……Could somebody please organize an appointment with a kop dokter for Strauss?!

  • This is rather distasteful from Dev, why make it such a public spectacle?

    Very unprofessional indeed.

  • This IS a surprise. or is it really.

Was it last week or the week before that there was an article doing the rounds that the Boks were looking at proudfoot or Os as a forward coach. The article was a bit ambigious about whether that would be to assist or to replace Gold.

Well it seems my question has been anwsered. He will be replaces.

So for ONCE IMO SARU are douing things the right way. Get rid of the kak, but BEFORE you get rid of it and make it public start looking for a replacement so that he can start immediately

  • Os du Randt has been approached to take over as the Springboks’ scrummaging coach.

The 37-year-old former Springbok loosehead prop, who played in 80 Tests between 1994 and 2007, is at present the Cheetahs scrummaging coach. He played in South Africa’s World Cup-winning teams in 1995 and 2007.

According to Sport24, Du Randt has been offered a contract by SA Rugby, to run from June this year to the end of the World Cup tournament in 2011.

Sport24 reports that he has agreed in principle to help the Boks, but some of the finer details in the contract still need to be ironed out. SA Rugby are apparently looking for a sponsor so that De Randt’s contract can be finalised.

Du Randt and Bok captain John Smit are close friends but Du Randt did comment last year that he did not see Smit as a tighthead prop, while it is understood that Bok coach Peter de Villiers is reluctant to consider Smit as a loosehead prop – despite Smit’s excellent performances at loosehead for the Sharks.

It is not known whether Balie Swart, who was the Bok scrummaging coach at the 2007 World Cup, or Matt Proudfoot, who has achieved substantial success at the Stormers, were approached or considered for the position.

  • @wpw (Comment 19) : Has anyone seen the tjieta scrum lately? Think Os’ technique was nullified by the new interpretations…’s been absolutely useless this year…..

    ……next please.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 16) : No doubt Gold was/is a rubbish forwards coach there just to make old men look good, but airing the dirty laundry publicly is rather stale.

Show some integrity Pdv, even if it’s just a little bit.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 20) :
Was thinking the same. The Bulls (after Balie Swart had got hold of them) destroyed the Cheetahs in the S14 and the the Sharks (with JS at 3) had the better of them in their game.
Cheetahs scrum in last years CC was potent but it seems all teams bar the Cheetahs have evolved since then.

Well done SARU. most of us asked how the coach of the lightest five in SA could become the bok coach. Now you guys are getting it right.

  • Okay this thread will have to do.

I was just going through some background info and yesterday one of the top 10 search engine phrases that found us was “46 16 2 2”

The article that it found was “Sias Ebersohn a shark?” I have no concern or question marks there.

But can ANYONE tell me why someone and in this case more than just ONE person would have done a google search for “46 16 2 2”

WTF???????????????? would you be looking for with that combination of numbers?????
