Sharks change one for Blues

Riaan Swanepoel will play off the bench this week, after John Plumtree opted to start with Andries Strauss at inside centre against the Blues. Swannie went over on an ankle against the Lions last weekend and was in danger of missing out altogether.

The only other change to the 22 that beat the Lions sees Vodacom Cup utility forward Michael Rhodes come onto the bench in place of Wilhelm Steenkamp, the lock forward on loan from the Bulls. This leaves the Sharks with a far more standard bench than they had last week, with two locks on the wood. Although Rhodes is a capable second-row replacement as well, his preferred position is blindside flank. With Jean Deysel and Willem Alberts both having taken a fair bit of strain down in Johannesburg, expect to see the big Michaelhouse lad weighing in with a few hits of his own in the second half. If Rhodes does get onto the park, he will be making his Super 14 debut.

The rest of the team is as we’ve come to expect, with Pat Lambie continuing at fullback, Stefan Terblanche again at outside centre and John Smit once again captaining the side from the loosehead prop position, while Beast Mtawarira remains on the bench.

The Sharks
15. Patrick Lambie
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Stefan Terblanche
12. Andries Strauss
11. JP Pietersen
10. Andy Goode
9. Ruan Pienaar
8. Willem Alberts
7. Jean Deysel
6. Jacques Botes
5. Johann Muller
4. Steven Sykes
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. Bismarck du Plessis
1. John Smit (capt)
16. Craig Burden
17. Tendai Mtawarira
18. Alistair Hargreaves
19. Michael Rhodes
20. Rory Kockott
21. Riaan Swanepoel
22. Lwazi Mvovo

  • I think Swannie could make an impact coming of the bench and
Rhodes deserves a change to show what he’s got.

  • @Letgo (Comment 2) : Rhodes hasn’t been his impressive self during the Voda Cup. Last year in the last part of the S14 the boy was a demolition machine, I’m yet to see him show that form again.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 3) : you mean the Currie Cup.

He’s been struggling with injury and, to be honest, I’m not convinced he’s in good enough nick to be making this step up now. Hope I’m wrong

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Did he not feature in the last few games of last year’s S14? Damn, too much rugby can’t hardly remember which comp is which. Guess you’re right, probably was the CC. 😳

Seems the injuries has a lasting effect on the guys, Rhodes, Swaan and Murray are all struggling to regain the form they had before their injuries.

  • Well think that is one up for the Blues with Strauss to start.

@Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 8) : Yes so would I. Would have given Mvovo a go there. Just need to look at the Blues centres and compare them to ours? πŸ™„ They are very strong there. See our centre cannel being targeted.

  • 10 Foode
    12 Strauss
    13 Stefan

This is the worst combo I’ve ever seen for the Sharks in super rugby. Even Dumond is better than Foode. Murray I would pick past Stefan – who seems to prefer kicking the ball or running head first into defenders, binned a few tries now. Would just select a young player past Strauss – again, something which should have been done long ago, but the current game/comp, is always ‘to important’.

Even if you disagree with everything I posted. our 10/12/13 combo, inspires nothing at all. Average at best defence, no play making abaility, some okay kicking, defence could be all over the shop.

    Not good. Not Sharks quality.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 15) : Ja, true enough. Plumtree and whatever backline coaches he has picked/been given, have overseen our backline play totally go to the dogs post Muir.

I’ll say this about Plumtree though – I’m grateful for the wins the sharks have got. I don’t think I could bare it if Cheeky Watson was talking about us in the same bracket as the Lions and Cheetahs.

  • Comment 16, posted at 22.04.10 11:50:42 by Os Reply

  • Puma if the Sharks had more than 2 backs we would be hosting the S14 final our forwards have been winning the last 4 games despite our back line’s inability to catch a ball and when they catch it don’t know better than to kik it straight into the oposition’s loosies hands imagine what the Sharks could do if we had a backline! Ruan and Lambie are excluded from this criticism

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 17) : Agreed. We`re getting some results now despite our average backs certainly not because of them.

Strauss is a huge worry for me, against arguably the 2nd best centre combination in the competition? ( I would rate the `Canes midfield above Blues )
But lets face it, we can moan about this situation all we want, we haven`t got other options now.
To be competative in the Super 14 you need depth in all the positions, everyone knows this so why are we surprised. We knew in the beginning of the season we`re thin in the backs. Nothing`s changed.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 21) : What about Mvovo? Can he play inside centre? Know it is not the time, to try him out there, but Strauss there πŸ˜• have more worries with him at inside centre against the Blues.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 17) : Yip, know that, how we miss Frans Steyn this year at inside centre. Stefan was dreadful on Saturday. We make those handling errors against the Blues we are a goner. I know this sounds bloody stupid, πŸ˜› but I would even have Beast at inside centre than Strauss 😳 At least he has some agro and he can break through the defence. πŸ˜‰

  • Predictions from other sites say Blues to win…i don’t think so. We have had the upperhand over them for a while now and our pack will stop their backs from being at their best. Sharks by around 5.

  • One thing i will say; if we want to win the super 15 we need to get Steyn or someone like steyn, and we might need another lock for another season or so. I am thinking maybe Nico Breedt’s experience will help guys like Mostert and Hargreaves develop. As our flyhalf situation stands i would throw the toy out and say, “frans the flyhalf spot is yours, come back please!!!” Brussouw’s contract is also up next year i think, maybe we should target him as a long term replacement for Botes. Fortunately Botes is performing well again.

  • Sharks should go ’round the country and buy all the top FH’s, then we’ll have a complete backline 11 to 15 with a few newly converted loosies and a new hooker or two. πŸ˜† 😈

Mvovo?? Sure, he’s quick, but can he defend in the midfield?? Now if Murray could just show his form of old and Frans Steyn would once again grace us with his presence, it would already make for something much more exciting than the current Status Quo.

  • Funny enough I was just sitting and thinking about next year’s world cup…
Now who has a good chance of winning it? well I think it basically boils down to four teams. France, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.

Now considering all of those teams what teams actually pose the biggest threat to South Africa?
Well I would say France and Australia.
Now why not NZ? Well we have beaten then in their home ground the last few years and I think we have the upper hand on them at the moment in their own country, and that is going to be a big help for us when the World Cup comes around. As we are the only team that has that over them we are in with a very good chance of winning when we play them.

Now thinking about France and Aus again, why do I say this? Well it all boils down to why I actually decided to start writing this.
Frans Steyn we need you back in SA, and also back in Sharks country.
Guys and Girls, The only why we are going to beat both France and Aus in the world cup is if he is in the team.
The main reason for my worry is Mr Cooper and Gynia from the the reds team.

Frans is the only player I see running Quade Cooper and Genia of the parka and letting them break a few legs and arms. The same goes to the the french team, and never forget that Frans Steyn gives the All Blacks shivers, like no one has done to them in years of SA rugby.

So please Oom Rudi… and Mr Hoskins get your acts together, if we want to take the world cup we have to get Fransie back in SA and very soon!
