Ex WP and Stormers hard hitting centre De Wet Barry may line up for the “old enemy” against his ex team mates in Cape Town this Saturday.

Barry took part in the Bulls training on Monday morning adding further fuel to the fire that the Bulls are looking to send a “B”  squad to face The Stormers at a sold out Newlands.

This fixture is a must win for the Cape franchise if they hope to achieve a home semi final while the men from Pretoria hold un unassailable lead at the top of the Super 14 standings. There is speak of the Bulls doing the Stormers a favour by sending this squad but anyone who has followed rugby in the republic ever will know that there is absolutely no love lost between the 2 unions and that no matter what the situation is, no favour will ever be asked or given.

The Bulls are looking to rest up a number of senior players while young speedster and heir to the “Philip Burger Windgat” throne Gerhard van den Heever has been banned for 2 weeks after delivering a spear tackle on Crusaders replacement Tim Bateman.

  • That’s pathetic. De Wet? WTF. Give Brummer the 10 shirt and JLP 12.

  • Bit harsh comparing GVDH to Phillip Burger. To me he comes across as a quiet almost apologetic character, and the tackle was certainly out of character.

Is it true that he has received a 2 week ban?

  • @molly (Comment 11) : Consistency is an issue, but there is a fine line between maintaining consistency and risking injury/fatigue to your key players, especially with only one game to go. Its unlikely the Bulls will suddenly drop form because they rest some players for a week. As for sending the Stormers overseas or knocking them out completely, I think it makes no difference to the Bulls. When the Stormers are good they are great but when they are bad they are very bad (see Force game). Im not sure the Bulls would naturally need to fear the Stormers any more than the Crusaders (who have far more super rugby knockout experience) or any of the Aus teams (to whom the Stormers generally lost). In terms of getting defensive patterns right, if you havent done it by game 12 you probably arent going to by game 13 and ditto Mornes form. Just my opinion, but its a moot point as the Bulls ARE going to rest players, that I promise.

If there is one team the Bulls wont want to face in a final it would be the Stormers – therefore they will want to beat them and beat them well in the hopoe that they go completely out or at best that they travel to Aus / NZ and then if they win they must do the flying thing all over again. Im sure the Bulls will bring their A game.

  • Dont know why Stormers are complaining about Bulls subbing most of their players – it is the most honest way for them to throw the game, and guarentee the Stormers a home Semi.

ANY team in the Bulls position would do the same thing. Makes no sense to risk injury to prime players – especially in a local derby where the opposition won’t hold back, ESPECIALLY if those teams are likely to face each other AGAIN in the final. I am sure that there would too strong a temptation for the dark forces to be out in full force in the rucks and mauls…

Think Gerhard got shafted really! Two weeks for the guy twisting in the tackle, GVDH put him down horizontally and didn’t drive him into the ground…still I suppose his name isn’t Matt Giteau!

Lets be honest, the Bulls will not send a complete B team and as the Bulls have a great deal of depth, whoever they send are not going to roll over and get beat.

After what the Stormers went through this weekend the Bulls should send as physical team as possible and see if the Stormers are up for it yet. The Stormers took a hell of a pounding against the Sharks and may take a little longer than normal to recover . In my view the biggest threat to the Bulls are the Stormers so I would do my best to make their progress as hard as possible.

So Stormers this is a gift from Bulls. Just take it. Stormers will get the 5 points and a home semi.

Don’t think it is right to do it from Bulls playing a under strength team, but ANY team in this tourney who are so far ahead on points would be doing the same thing.
