This comes from an incredibly dodgy source, but apparently Peter Grant may skip the Currie Cup this year as he heads off to play in Japan!
According to a report on a website that gets more of these “exclusive” stories wrong than right, it has been reported that the WP pvito will be back in time to represent the Stormer in the Super 15 next year. The same article links prop JD Moller with a move to France.
More on this if it actually turns out to be true, but my breath is far from held!
Update: There appears to be an announcement (in Japanese!) on the Kobe Steelers website confirming this. As a result this has now moved a few notches up the credibility scale.

Last year I heard that he was leaving for the Force! π
Needless to say it didn’t happen!! β π
Is this saucy?
I thought he was leaving for Europe?! π
Please can we have a article on the Houdini exploits of ”Chilli”-boy Ralapele…This is the biggest embarrassment in Bok Rugby History…And it’s not fair to the man that was arguably the best U21 forward in the World…then Choose Bandise Maku!!!At least his up to Super Rugby Standards…And maybe a article about the Province props being talked up the whole time…what a Joke…
I thought he didn’t want to go to Japan before because he would have no one to braai with???
Grant`s gonna be .. . big in Japan . .
Lets sign Grant ourselves? Why not? We need a flyhalf, he is young and hey, he is kinda a local as well.
Any thoughts?
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : i like Grant and he has nice touches – but he sometimes make me thinks that he is another monty and we already have one.
@rekinek (Comment 8) : Grant was really influential in the latter part of the Stormers S14 campaign. I just can’t see Monty doing the same for the Sharks, even if we did give him the chance to do [email protected]<
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Yes, he was and he was also good in 2008 – but somehow he is not overtly brilliant. In 2 minds about the guy.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I BELIEF SIGNING GRANT IS THE BEST POSSIBLE investment we can make-and Grant is a Shark at Heart…he was known as a shark at Maties a week before the final I made a joke about being a shark and the shy man had a good laugh…i think Grant is a Gr8 signing for the sharks….he would never be a Bok..unless injured players force the couches hand. Grant is the Strauss of the 20’s the boy just does not find favor-but what a better investment ever…a stable solid excellent 10 that can provide you with stability and availability all year long. Besides Rassie Loves Lionell Cronje—-Grant!!! Come back HOME BOY!!!
@BoerSeun (Comment 11) : Couldn’t agree with you more… Japan only served to screw up an already bad Jaco vd Westhuizen even further…
@BoerSeun (Comment 11) : @SandTiger (Comment 12) :
You guys can have him when we dont need him anymore.
Grant is 25/6 now so you can have him in about 5 or 6 years time.
Is that fine with you?? π
@SandTiger (Comment 12) : Hahahahahahahahah!
when was the last time we had someone for 5/6years….jip 3years is fine with me….if he can play 12 with lambie 10 or any upcoming player @ 10 and he can learn from Grant then it’s a sound investment…same with grant a 10 and a young new 12…you learn your most from the players you play with not the couch…@wpw (Comment 13) :
update update update π
jaja, Rob Wagner announced he has a special release and will play there during the CC, make some cash and be back for S14 next year. WP confirmed on twitter.
Also, JdV confirmed for 2010 and 2011. CJ coming in Nov. Lionel, De Waal and van Aswegen (u21) will cover 10 during the CC. Nick Koster is FINALLY moving back to eighthman.
wpw will not be happy ! π₯
@molly (Comment 18) : looks like WP is making all the right moves
@robdylan (Comment 20) : ag, I’m concerned for post WC… Habana, Fourie, De Villiers, CJ are almost definitely all gone, don’t know who elses contracts expire then. But next year’ll be ok.
Just read on that other site that Hoffman will focus on scrummie, that’ll hopefully bode well for the future. VERY happy to hear that.
@molly (Comment 18) :
sauce??? π
@molly (Comment 22) :
yeah, I hope he gets a decent chance.
When does the CC start?? π
@molly (Comment 22) : at least you guys have a talented (identified) youngster in Cronje and an older head to steer the ship in de Waal.
We don’t know what we’re doing
@wpw (Comment 23) : WP announced on their official twitter account, so don’t think so. I see voldy has confirmed it too, looking on WP site as I type.
@robdylan (Comment 25) : I suppose, there is a little to be excited about. If we can keep some of the youngsters around for a while still. De Jongh, Whitehead and Cronje we have some stuff to be excited about.
@wpw (Comment 24) : 9 July, I think
@molly (Comment 27) :
I read that Jantjes is also due back from injury and hopes he can be ready for the start of the CC.
He has been training for some time now and starting taking contact recently. π
@wpw (Comment 29) : I remember he was training with them at the end of the S14. Hope he can find some old form.
the original story was on SupaRugby yesterday, then a facebook contact sent me a link to the story on the Kobe Steelers site. Must say, I didn’t even think of checking for an official announcement on the WP site. Sharks have taught me bad habits π
am I alone in not really rating Conrad Jantjes much? One of those players who was sublime when he made his test debut going on for ten years ago, but has done very little since…
@robdylan (Comment 32) :
He has had a few good seasons at Super rugby level but he would then invariably get injured soon afterwards but I agree, he hasn’t been great for some time now.
Well at least not at Bok level!! π
So It’s official then.

@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 34) :
My how times have changed. π
from 2008
Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant has turned down a R10m offer from a Japanese rugby club – because the Springbok emblem and the Western Province disa mean so much to him.
And because he loves braaivleis.
“It proves there are still players who regard the Springbok emblem and the disa as more important than money,” Grant’s agent, Chris de Beer, said on Thursday.
Well I for one am amazed that Grant has once again been snubbed by the Bok selectors!!
πΏ
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 35) : Well now that is good news i see not everybody runs for money money now that is what i call true to the WP team and to SA don’t you think
@chaz (Comment 37) :
THAT WAS IN 2008. π The comment above confirms that he IS going.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 38) : π³ π
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 38) : ok 2008 well done so now the money money bug has caught up with him mmmmm π
@wpw (Comment 36) : What about the Sharks selectors snubbing him? The Sharks should’ve opened their wallet for this guy.
@SharksRTB (Comment 41) :
You guys have been interested in him for some time and yet he wants to stay in CT.
Says a lot doesn’t it??
π
Being a maritzburg college old boy, i attended our reunion day on saturday and happened to bump into Peter Grant at the bowling club just outside the school grounds, where pretty much everyone goes after the game. Me and my mates went up to him and asked him if he’d be joining the Sharks anytime soon, his response was something along the lines of it being in his 3 year plan. I’ll be honest, we had been dopping since early morning so my memory of all this is blurry at best… but it was something along those lines. My mates reckon he was refering to when his current WP contract ends.
@justinwhufc (Comment 43) : hope so hope is all we got π
Hopefully this announcement on Japanese website is not like the one on Ulster’s : according to SA newspaper … π
@rekinek (Comment 45) :
