More unhappiness in Lions land

So was anyone paying attention a few weeks ago when an article linked Lions flyhalf Ruan Boshoff with a move to the Sharks?

It was the same story, written by Hendrik Cronje, that dropped the bombshell about John Smit moving to Joburg and Ruan Pienaar heading to Ulster. To our knowledge, both of those are very much happening after the Currie Cup, so there’s every chance that the Boshoff story may have some fact to it as well. Our info is that the young flyhalf was sent packing by the Lions’ “brainstrust” today, having failed to make their Currie Cup squad. Perhaps new backline player-coach Carlos Spencer doesn’t want any competition for his own spot…

Former Valke centre Rouan Cloete was also cut – hardly surprising given that there are no fewer than 13 centres currently on the Lions books. Not as many locks, though, with warhorses Willem Stoltz and Jannes Labuschagne both having their contracts torn up.

More on this as it develops.

  • Barney really heading to the Lions?

    Say it aint so Roberto!

  • don,t know if ruan boshoff is the solution to the flyhalf problem but his better than monty and maybe guy cronje ,is rudolf just trying to stock pile players the sharks have to many players now the need to identify a starting line up and stick with it there can,t be so much rotation this is why I support western province now

  • @Big Fish (Comment 1) : I think I might be able to get over Barney leaving for the snoiL rather quickly.

Brilliant captain, but that helped us jack squat this year, in fact he had a worse season than Stafan Terblanche. He’s not the best hooker in the country either, so losing that part of his game will definitely not affect the Sharks.

As for coaching….do we really need another forwards coach? He’ll make an excellent team manager, but I’m not that convinced he’ll be a great coach (Martin Johnson springs to mind)

  • @Big Fish (Comment 1) : sorry, mate, but I can’t do that.

All I got is death, taxes and John Smit moving to Joburg in November.

  • Ruan is Good played 12 as well, has started for the senior side(blue bulls) at 12centre aged 20.

I like this new blood in Shark Land. I wish we could get Andrew Merthens to work with these young flyhalf / Centers for a Couple of Months…he is really doing good work in the French league as a Couch even though he still plays every now and then. And has had a hand in all the French flyhalfs coming through the last 5years…

  • @zvision10 (Comment 3) : Don’t write off Swannie at 12…with a little competition he is really going to Compete and I think going to be a much more valuable asset. I hope they tone the bulky 12 a bit…he is looking like a prop aged 23…take a page from ROCCOCOCO BOOK my vriend…rather burst through a gap and create more space, than become a Slowish Nonu…and pile it over your defender…Swannie I hope you keep all the new boys guessing…

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Smit is Gone, and Venter not Coming to sharks…The lions have just axed the only good thing going for the in the forwards. I wont be surprised if Ackers TUNS OUT FOR A COUPLE OF GAMES….I saw him at the airport the other day…he looks in shape and is lighter than when he played for the sharks, I’ll have a good Laugh if the Lions ald boys run out….Spencer10/ackers4/Smit2(joke)/wiese and toks…

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 7) : Swaan just needs some proper skills development, as you said it’s better to be a Cockoroacho than a Nono…..Swaan needs to rely more on side-step and a hand-off than TRYING-TO run over the defense.

  • @Uli (Comment 10) : Uli my friend i’m sorry but the new news is that he is not coming anymore…..sorry my friend…..I don’t know whats up…I know he was really looking to the sharks as his new beginning but it is confirmed that the Sharks did not come through with the deal…

If Henson comes I am trading my colours for the bulls thats for sure. I am tired of imports and not trusting our own youth.

  • @Uli (Comment 15) : I agree on the Fact that Imports mess up our system, but lets be fair Imports that could add experiece is always a gr8 tool to blood youngsters..Like brown or even monty…gave pienaar and steyn a platform to grow from…but henson, freakishly good/bad player-little experience I dont know-it also smells funny to me…I would have liked a Umanga, merthens, even Monty/adviser couch player…not monty as player…but Umanga…just to give some insight to youngsters on his vision for the game…this old SA generation..of 95 boks with 10 tests does not really blow my hair back(10 SUPER GAMES TODAY is more worth). I think Carlos may add value to the lions but really I would have liked a more reliable attractor, king carlos is LOSKOP…I think new Zeeland is starting to realize this bringing all these experienced hands back to NZ.

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 16) : I have to agree with you. But I think the most important thing the Sharks were able to do a few years ago, was to get tradition back into the system, involving the old Sharks players was very important to add to this ie. Teichmann, Allen ect. And I wonder if the lions are doing more harm than good by using imports, they need Kobus , Pienaar, van Rensburg to go there and tell these youngsters what its all about to actually play for the lions.

Guidance from senior or ex players are very important and we saw that when SA was way behind NZ. Thatโ€™s what made NZ so, so strong those years. They have lost allot of it due to their players going to EU and that shows in their rugby.

  • I don,t have any thing against swanie but I don,t know even if he improved a few things if there is a place for inside centers like him in rugby anymore the IRB is going to keep on trying to encourage running rugby modern .I like running rugby more than I like a brand so thats why i,m going to support W.P on a full time basis ,this isn,t the sharks rugby I supported i kno when to cut my losses supporting the sharks while brain van zyl is there is pointless

  • I,ve always supported province deep down but tried to b loyal to my hometown team but until brain van zyl is thrown out ,my sharks jersey is going into storage for a while ,at some point loyalty can become stupidity they bring back ian mac and I,ll be back in black and white today but it,s been a long 12 years supporting this circus since ian mac left

  • I agree Swannie is not the answer, If I just look back at the s/14, how many times he went down with a injury, that is just proof of the mental strength. We need someone like Walter Venter that is as hard as a nail; all he needs is someone to trust in him, The Lions is not doing it for him

Even if we play him out of position at centre he can`t do much worse . .

    Any news on Adie ???
