Swys de Bruin has selected his Sharks team to face Boland in the opening game of the ABSA Under 21 competition, in Durban on Friday afternoon. A number of players who were on the fringes of Sharks senior selection, including winger Mark Richards and Piet Lindeque, have been named in the squad.

The non-availability of the majority of the Sharks Baby Bok contingent has caused a headache or two, but it’s nothing insurmountable as there is a large squad of players who have all performed well on the club scene to choose from. Dale Chadwick and Julian Redelinghuys both made their senior debuts for the Sharks in last year’s Currie Cup, while Jandre Marais, Hannes Snyman, Meyer Swanepoel, Lambert Groenewald and Rosco Speckman all enjoyed gametime with the Sharks XV earlier in the season.

Injuries to both of the Cronje brothers opens the door for Cobus Reinach (son of late Bok winger Jaco) at scrumhalf and former Affies boy Willie du Plessis at pivot. Look out for the fiery Glenwood combo of Sean Malton and Dexter Fahey on the bench, a hooker and tighthead prop respectively that have played their parts in a succession of formidable Green Machine tight fives over the last few years. Three of the players in the starting fifteen hail from the little-fancied Welkom Gimnasium; brothers Jandre and Peet Marais and fullback Wynand Pienaar.

The team will be lead by Swanepoel, playing in the number 8 jersey.

Sharks under 21:

15 Wynand Pienaar, 14 Mark Richards, 13 Arno van Zyl, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Rosco Speckman, 10 Willie du Plessis, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Meyer Swanepoel (capt), 7 Lambert Groenewalt, 6 Jaco Otto, 5 Jandre Marais, 4 Peet Marais, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Hannes Snyman, 1 Dale Chadwick.
16 Sean Malton, 17 Dexter Fahey, 18 Tim Agaba, 19 Cameron Dunlop, 20 Charlie Purdon, 21 Piet Lindeque, 22 Gouws Prinsloo

  • How does Lindeque manage to make the Sharks Snr team but gets benched for the u21’s… Makes no sense.

  • @Oubaas2009 (Comment 1) : I would imagine he was released to the under 21s very late…

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Could be that I guess. Just seems plain silly though.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Surely Richards would have been released at the same time and he is starting?

  • And Megatron’s cousin??

  • @Oubaas2009 (Comment 3) : where’s Dwayne Jenner as well? Impressed at 12 for the Sharks against the Valke, yet not even in the under 21 squad…

Hate to say it, but until we have a single Director of Coaching responsible for co-ordination across all the various teams, we’re going to get this sort of disjoint cropping up more and more.

  • @wpw (Comment 5) : the majority of the Baby Bok guys have been given an extra week off.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : 100% correct!

If Plum is going to consider Jenner and Lindeque as options for CC, they should be getting as much game time as possible in u21’s. Need one person calling the shots here!!

  • Here’s a question completely off the topic… Is there any indication of who is going to do the kicking for the Sharks (ie Meyer or Kockott)?

  • @Oubaas2009 (Comment 8) : correct. But the Sharks don’t even know who’s calling the shots in the senior side (look at the backline coaching chaos in the Super 14), so expecting them to work together across the age-group teams too seems a bit far-fetched at this stage.

Remember we posted an article a few weeks back saying that the uncertainty about coaching structures was dissuading players from signing with the Sharks?

  • Rob,

    Where is Jean Stemmet?

  • @dawj (Comment 11) : out of favour, I believe. Seems they’ve discarded him without ever seeing him on the field.
