A back injury has ruled Springbok lock Andries Bekker out of the forthcoming Vodacom Tri-Nations Test against Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.

SARU reports that Bekker suffered an acute disc injury towards the end of the Test against the All Blacks in Wellington at the weekend and underwent an MRI scan in the Queensland capital on Monday morning. He has been withdrawn by the medical team and will see a specialist for treatment on his return to South Africa.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said the injury to Bekker was “unfortunate”.

“It is a setback but we will have to deal with it. That is part of the game. We have to rely on the strength within our squad for the Test. It is a blow for Andries too as he was just coming back from a previous injury.”

Meanwhile, the remainder of the Springbok squad has been cleared for selection for this weekend’s Vodacom Tri-Nations clash – the third in succession for the Springboks.

“As expected there are a few niggles but it is good news for us that we came away from Wellington with just a single serious injury and can assemble a strong line-up for the Brisbane Test.”

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 2) : He has to bring in De Jongh, has to bring in Aplon, has to bring in Pienaar, he should bring in Frans Steyn, Dewald Potgieter might be there… IMO the team will read:

    15. Sesame Street Muppet
    14. Gio Aplon
    13. Jaque Fourie
    12. Juan De Jongh
    11. Habana
    10. Steyn
    9. Ruan Pienaar
    8. Spies
    7. Dewald Potgieter
    6. Schalk
    5. Vic
    4. Flip
    3. CJ
    2. Smit
    1. Gurthro

    16. Beast
    17. Chilliboy
    18. Ali Hargreaves
    19. Francois Louw
    20. Januarie
    21. Wynand Olivier
    22. Francois Hougaard

  • As per previous blog… Flip on bench and no Ali Hargreaves and Daniesaurus to start, somewhere in my head I thought he was banned, obviously paying more attention to The Sharks at the moment… 😳

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 3) : It is a good game to play De Jongh in.

You guys really give Kirchner a hard time don’t you.

I felt for large parts of the last 160 minutes of Test Rugby he looked one of your better players.

I think the whole worldwide rugby community thinks come RWC time your side will be:

    15. Steyn
    14. JPP
    13. Fourie
    12. JDV
    11. Habana
    10. Steyn
    9. FDP
    8. Spies
    7. Smith
    6. Schalk
    5. Vic
    4. Botha
    3. CJ
    2. Smit
    1. Beast

I wonder how wrong they will be ❓

….or does PDV have a plan or two up his sleeve ! 💡

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 6) : That’s a very likely team as far as PdV’s thinking goes. I’m not sure about Frans Steyn’s involvement though as I’m sure there is something sinister still going on.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 6) : I do personally like giving Zane Kirchner a hard time, simply because he has a bad hair cut and should be short back and sides… 😉

BUT seriously I don’t dislike him, but you cannot have the number 15 in the World Champion team being an average player, if he is off he is OFFFFFF, and when he is on he does the basics well, a Fullback needs X Factor, one of the few positions where unpredictable counter attacks and solid defensive organization are welcomed, compare him to a Monty, to a Jason Robinson, to a Mils Woolyhyaena and you can see why he doesn’t belong, for a title defence other than S14 you need a WORLD CLASS 15.

As for your RWC ’11 First XV – I don’t think that Botha is a given, and I don’t think CJ is a given in the run on team… Number 14,11,15 are up for grabs this season if the coach only admits it… But I think he is fearful, because if the big names are not there and we lose, he has no scapegoat… Just discussion…

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 6) : Add to that:
    The Du Plessis
    Vd Merwe

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 8) :

I guess no ones place is in concrete so far out from the RWC

…. when however we pick 30 i image all those 15 will get the nod.

….useful time now to play guys …pressure off Tri Nations gone ! 😎

    Just kidding hehehe 😉

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 10) : Funnily enough the pressure is off the 3N and now is the time to take more calculated risks and blood the next gen… Even if the starting XV is debatable, yep can only agree that those 30 if fit will be there… I am actually cringing just thinking about RWC ’11 squad announcements – he will make some howlers in the name of experience building, but he is blind to see that NOW IS THE TIME FOR THAT demmit!!!

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 6) : Im with you Hert, I thought Zane was decent and wasnt the worst player on the park for the Boks.

I don’t think he was horrible at all. However he and Januiare get real stick here, for me they were two of your best. Sure Steyn has a bit of an X Factor and can admittedly do special things and Ruan is a bit slicker with his service but the Boks never got hammmered because of their individual performances.

For me the Boks looked a bit wary and a little slow….AB forwards seemed a little more mobile and threatening with ball in hand and the AB loosies were outstanding. Both with and without the ball.

I thought both test matches were interesting from the fact that neither fly half influenced the matches that much at all !

Boks need to find some get up and go in Queensland …there will be no prizes for guessing how the Aussies are going to play !

P.S. Always difficult in front of that crowd !

    P.P.S. Especially for the Ref.

  • Amen HH. Look, I think the time has come for Ruan to start cos Ricky hasn’t been at his best BUT to single out those two players is just ridiculous.
Our forwards have struggled in both tests and let’s not forget how terrible Steyn has been but not a word about him, Matfield or the rest of the overrated ‘senior’ Boks!!
It takes outsider like HH to bring a bit of objectivity to this subject!!
