The Eastern Province Kings beat the Border Bulldogs 42-25 in East London on Friday.
The Kings ran in 5 tries to the hosts 3 in exciting First Division Currie fixture.Ok ok I know that not many people are interested in this result but what is worth mentioning is the guys who are now turning out for the Eastern Cape Kings(formerly know as the Mighty Elephants or Jumbos)
The Kings seem to be building a decent squad with the likes of De Wet Barry, Rory Duncan , Darron Nel , Tiger Mangweni , Zolani Mofu , Justin Peach , Mzwandile Stick and Mpho Mbiyozo (of 7’s fame) and JJ Gagiano all on the teams books.
According to Alan Solomons they are constantly in contact with players wanting to return to the region, with the assembled squad it looks likely that they will be the team to step up into Premier Division Currie Cup .Something they last did many many years ago.

That would be great, I canβt believe EP actually played in the Super 10 and they are nowhere to be seen now.
you left out probably their best player, loose forward Jacques Potgieter.
He used to be one of us…
I’d like to see them move up into the Premier Division, bring back some traditional strength, they will not be a Super 15 team, unless you have promotion / relegation of the wooden spoonists… SANZAR ruled in favour of Melbourne Rebels not due to player depth, history etc, but finances – play in Aus have it televised = MONEY…
I can’t wait to see the Kings take out the useless Lions. And the Cheetahs for that matter.
Hope they get a decent side together.
Its amazing how many great players come from the Eastern Cape. And sad how few of those have played for them.
It would only benefit SA to have a strong franchise there.
@robdylan (Comment 2) : I actually saw him in the highlites package and he was incredible, but I was not sure if he was the ex Sharks guy.
Rather large lad
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Indeed, There HAS to be promotion relegation; makes the game that much more intense that much more exciting, how kak is it; forgive me my expletive that you see teams perenially playing poor rugby only to be awarded with another shot at the wooden spoon the following year… Ugh… The Kings deserve a shot based on promotion / relegation and SANZAR needs to be opened minded about the matter – GLRU and FSRU might bemoan this, but how many other unions suck the hind tit so to speak?
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 6) : he is VERY big. Played under 21s for the Sharks but struggled with a few injuries and was eventually cut loose by Strooli. As you may recall, he played a few pre-season games for the Stormers, but was eventually cut from the final S14 squad.
They should proof them selves first buy getting into the Currie cup and then Yes promotion relegation would do our Currie cup and super rugby allot of good.
@Uli (Comment 9) : Agreed… Although promotion relegation already exists in CC, just needs to happen in S15.
One or two seasons in S15 for the Kings and they could purchase some real young talent and nurture them into stars… I am being idealistic, but it is a better thought than seeing a straggling Lions team tarnishing SA Rugby’s Super teams image.
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 10) : can I get a “hell yeah”??
@robdylan (Comment 11) : Preaching to the converted… π if only more were as open minded as some of the stalwarts on this site…
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 12) : he he… indeed, indeed.
You need more stars… π
@robdylan (Comment 13) : Look I’ll earn them with the hard yards and all, but if you release some my way… Heck I’d be much obliged!
That JJ Gagiano played Varsity Cup this year, he was wearing those pink pants quite often.
@Jarson (Comment 15) : the only time pick pants was ever considered a good thing
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 12) :
brown-noser!! π
@wpw (Comment 17) :
@wpw (Comment 17) : (Richard wipes his neck clean with some wet wipes)… What? π Hey look, I tried… As you’ll see I am on one star still…
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 19) : π
