The Vodacom Western Province training session on Monday in Bellville had a youthful look about it with youngsters such as JJ Engelbrech, Yaasir Hartzenberg, Nick Koster and Louis Schreuder taking part.

WP are taking on the Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday evening in their third Absa Currie Cup match of the season and coach Allister Coetzee hinted that he might give these promising players some game time.

“I think it’s important, while we have to make sure we do well in this competition, we have a responsible to blood our youngsters as well. We want to make sure we do very well in this competition, but likewise give these youngsters an opportunity to develop and also some exposure at this level.

“It’s import to blood youngsters while you’ve got momentum because we want to create a winning culture at Province. At this point in time it’s looking really good, I’m happy with where we are.

“These youngsters looked a bit surprised today, but excited to be training with the squad.”

The coach said he was looking to create opportunities for them. “We’ve got quite a balanced squad. We’re looking good at prop, we’ve got four locks and De Kock Steenkamp is not far from coming back into the mix.

“We’re solid at loose-forward, sixes we’ve got, but in the nr. 7 position we’d like to have another and that’s why Yaya is there to back up 7 and 8.

“At 9 we’ve only got two there with Ricky on national duty, that’s why we’ve got Schreuder there to fill in if there’s an opportunity and outside backs there’s another opportunity to find another youngster.

“I just want to make sure that when the season progresses if we pick up injuries we’re covered.”

Coetzee emphasised the fact that the youngsters were involved doesn’t mean WP underestimate the Leopards. “For us it’s always a matter of raising our standards and keeping momentum. We’ve got lots of respect for any side that plays in the Currie Cup competition.

“We’ve got to go up there and work hard and be accurate in what we do. My message to the players is that nothing is going to change this week, the intensity must be up there.”

  • Hehehe we just need wp to slip up once . . . then we`re in the top spot!

But seriously they won`t take that many chances against the Leopards. They know home ground advantage is crucial for success.

Only difference is that Yaya will actually run into gaps instead of trying to go ‘through’ people!! 😈
