The arbritration case between the Sharks and Cheetahs was heard today but no judgement was given.

Apparently the case will be dealt with as a matter of urgency but judgement will be given at a later stage. Another legal battle rages on .  Not much else to say really, only that we hope the players future will be decided sooner rather than later.

  • Pathetic! It’s just amazing how slow the legal systems is. 🙄

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : The player does / did have a contract with FSRU, they approached The Sharks, I say they i.e. His agent and him, hoping that they could find find loopholes, FSRU unearthed him and nurtured him, then increased his salary and perks, they extended his contract – call me old school, but I take a hard stance on this, you don’t snoop about when you’re a greenhorn wanting greener pastures, you become successful through patience and dedication to the cause… The more this drags on the more I think that his contract is water tight and that FSRU are now asking huge cash for him to be released. An arbitration usually brings about a judgement, so there are clearly appeals and the like taking place. Cause and Effect of greed in sports generally… Willem Alberts and Louis Ludik were at a shit union, on a downward spiral, and wanted out – but these okes did the hard yards and gave The Lions their monies’ worth – there were loop holes in the contract and we (The Sharks) exploited it, something sour has happened in the case with Lionel Mapoe, and greed is the problem, greed from the player, greed from the opposing unions & greed from the agent.

An irritated opinion, but ultimately only an opinion…

  • Let’s hope its a positive outcome for the Sharks. I think Mapoe at 13 and Al Hargreaves captain with Oupa on the bench to provide calmness in the last half hour. My team for the Super 15: 1.Beast 2.Bismark 3.Jannie 4.Al Hargreaves 5. Steven Sykes 6. Jean Dysel 7. Willem Alberts 8. Kanko 9. Kockett 10. JLP 11.Mvovo 12.Bosman 13.Mapoe 14.JPP 15.Lambie

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 7) :

Not a bad team, postional change as Ali is loose lock and Steven is tight lock. Deysel, Daniel, Kanko, Botes, Alberts would be revolved on rotation and or performance, but Alberts operates better from Number 8, and Deysel from blindside 7, but I think they are professional enough to switch as they do play a similar game… We are spoilt in the loose forward department if you consider the likes of Rhodes and co as well…

We could see Meyer at 13 with Lambie at 12 and have Ludik at the back… Mapoe to provide cover at wing or 13…

But not a bad team at all…

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 7) : I would never let Kockett start ahead of McLeod, slow ball to the backs is not what we want, he’s fine as a sub, but he was given enough time to proof that he can sort out his issues with clearing the ball to the backs quicker, but he just seemed to go backwards every time we saw him play… Anyway, I hope he can find some of his old spark again, but it just doesn’t seem like he’ll ever be the kind of scrummy who provides quick and clean ball to the backs and that’s not what a team like the Sharks wants.

  • @Letgo (Comment 11) : Yep, Charl is good with the quick ball, crisp service, he needs to work on his allround game and he will be a champ… The best (team) scrumhalf in KZN.

  • Just a thought as I havent actually ever seen Mapoe play. Is this guy worth all the effort that is going into this. I mean, I can understand WP doing it for Fourie (arguably the best outside center in the world last year) bu to go through all of this for a guy who has basically had one good currie cup and has spent the year out with an injury? Especially in light of the fact that the sharks are pretty set on the wing anyway and Mapoe has only played a limited amount of time at 13. The Sharks should let it go. After this, Mapoe will never play for the Cheetahs again anyway. If the Cheetahs win, Mapoe will probably be “injured” for the rest of his contract at which stage he can be courted again without the distraction if he is indeed worth it.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 7) : This is how I would play the team. Depending on form, opposition and combinations.

    15. Ludick
    14. JPP
    13. Adi/Mapoe???
    12. JLP/Bosman
    11. Mvovo
    10. Lambie
    9. McLeod
    8. Kanko
    7. Deysel
    6. Botes/Keegan
    5. Hargreaves
    4. Sykes
    3. Jannie
    2. Bissie
    1. Beast

Depending on how Lambie goes at 10 against the Lions and the rest of the CC…otherwise I would play him at 12 at JLP at with Bosman covering both those positions.

I would have Stefan/Bosman/Kockett/…John/Burden/Mostert/Alberts on the bench…I think Keegan or Botes will have to miss out, unless you use a 5/2 split, but you don’t want to do that to much…and unless Alberts is used as both lock and loosie cover, but I don’t like that idea.

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 14) : I would rather give some of our youngsters a chance to proof themselves in the position, especially since Adi/Stefan/JLP/Bosman and to a lesser extent even Ludik can cover the position if needed.

We have a couple of players who is showing some potential at center in their age group. Better give them a chance, than go through this for a player who may not even be worth it in the end… 😐

  • @Letgo (Comment 16) : I just think its a bit crazy. The Sharks picked up cover in the backline where they need it most (JLP, Bosman) and are instead focused on picking up a player in a position where they have no need. Sharks should rather focus on picking up a power lock to cover Sykes.

  • @Letgo (Comment 15) : I like the idea of having both Stefan and John on the bench, in tight situations, you give them the last 20-30min to come on with fresh bodies and minds to keep the players calm and guide them to a victory…that is if Stefan doesn’t retire this year, John will still be with us till the WC.

  • Mapoe is doing nothing wrong by considering his optins. If the contract were clear-cut, their wouldn’t be an arbitration. The only player I can recall being on the losing end of a contract-related arbitrtation in recent times was Bakkies. And he is Bakkies…

The kid is helluva good. He has gas aplenty, strong in the tackle, lots of heart, and should fill out to the upper 90kg: good for wing or 13.

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 18) : Well…if we were thinking of using him at 13, it’s not really a position where we don’t need cover. Out of all the guys I mentioned who could play 13, only Adi is actually a 13 and he’s turning 30…or 29 this year and 30 next year. I just think it would have been better to take this chance to get some of the young guys into the team…

Imagine we bought an eightman 4 years ago, then maybe Kanko would have been lost to the Sharks, instead we picked a young player and reaped the rewards. Same with Lambie, he was given a chance and showed what he was made of. If it weren’t for a couple of injuries, then maybe that would not have happened under Plumtree, who is a very conservative coach…

Anyway, I won’t be disappointed if we do get Mapoe, he seems a pretty decent player and could become the answer at 13 for the Sharks, I just don’t get why we would go through all of this for him, I can only assume that the Sharks thought it would be more simple than this…but is it ever?

  • People are discounting Adi way too fast.

Outside guys like Lambie or JLP, and with out back 3 and scrummy, he could unleash the dragon next year.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 23) : Hey, I’m not discounting Adi. I’m just saying his our only specialist 13, which means, we’re a little thin in this particular position and when players near the age of thirty most of them start thinking about other options. I think we might see Adi with us a while longer though, he is still in the running for the Bok team and he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would throw that away.

    I like Adi… 🙂
