WP team to face the old enemy

17:05 pm on Saturday presents us with the newest installment of the traditional North vs South derby when WP host the Skyblue Cows at Newlands stadium.

This fixture had started to lose some of its appeal over the years as WP became the joke of the local rugby scene fielding a team with forwards battle hardened only in the art of dressing up for Top Billing camera crews .

All that has changed in recent years with WP employing first Rassie Erasmus and then Alistair Coetzee, Robbie Fleck and the giant task master Matt Proudfoot.

Under this lot WP have turned from the Light 5, Powderpuff pack, Brokeback mountaineers into a dominant force, stepping back for no one and more often than not, steamrolling over opposition when need, last weeks 50-3 demolition job of Griquas being a perfect example.

The days of losing 75-14 to the Blue Bulls(albeit in S12) seem like an eternity ago and WP are actually seen as favourites to win this fixture, a tag that would have been laughed at just 2 years ago.

15. Conrad Jantjes, 14. Fabian Juries, 13. Tim Whitehead, 12. Paul Bosch, 11. Frikkie Welsh, 10. Willem de Waal, 9. Dewaldt Duvenage  8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Francois Louw/Nick Koster, 6. Pieter Louw, 5. Anton van Zyl (captain), 4. Adriaan Fondse, 3. Brok Harris, 2. Tiaan Liebenberg, 1. Wicus Blaauw

Substitutes: 16. Deon Fourie, 17. JD Moller, 18. Buhle Mxunyelwa, 19. De Kock Steenkamp, 20. Nick Koster/Pieter Myburgh, 21. Conrad Hoffmann 22. Lionel Cronje

**Francois Louw is currently with the Bok training camp but it seems that he may be one of the players cut from the camp and will therefore be eligible to partake in the fixture.

  • I really want the Sharks to move to the top of the log this weekend, but I really don’t want the Bulls to win. 😐

We’ll just have to do it next weekend then. 😀

  • I back Province to take this. WP are the team to beat. I doubt Flo will be cut from the Bok squad of 24… Nick Koster to start.

The old foe, the old enemy, the youngsters are stepping up to the plate, the experienced guys are sticking their hands up, energy sapping stuff, you won’t stop him from there, that ball can do anything if it bounces (it usually does)… We have rugby cliches! I love it!

  • Another rugby site CONFIRMS that Flo has been axed from the Bok squad, if that be so, I think it is a grave mistake for The Bok game… We don’t seem to learn (Boks)… Logic does not prevail in these times…

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 8) : Mistake to have Flo axed from the squad, that means it is 6) Schalk 7) Juan Smith 8) Spies, and I do not think that that is the right combination… We sorely need a fetcher in this mix…

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 4) : I echo those sentiments…and holding my breath that Frans doesnt get dropped. With FDP out, there are no game breakers in the side, Habana just not coping without JPP either…

  • @Just a Fan (Comment 11) : Yep, the problem with Steyn is that he has not linked up with the team just yet and is carrying a niggle, he is also sorely needing game time, fear the worst bud…

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 9) : Yeah, someone who fetches more than just yellow cards!

  • @Just a Fan (Comment 11) : As for Habana, I agree the jury is out, and he needs to perform… They cannot blame fatigue for a left winger… He is out of form and looks to have lost a fair bit of speed…

  • So now the Bok camp has me confused (no comments about that)

There are two MAYBE contradictory articles doing the rounds.
    1) Kirchner releasd to play for the bulls this weekend
    2) Boks still waiting on feedback re Steyn’s injury

So if Steyn IS injured wo will play 15 then?

  • BTW i don’t think Flo HAS been axed from the squad. this from 365 who I trust more than Voldy.

Meanwhile, four players – Zane Kirchner and Dewald Potgieter of the Blue Bulls, along with Bismarck du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira of the Sharks – have been released to play in the Currie Cup at the weekend.
from an article at 16:45 today.
