Good news for Sharks

The Sharks look likely to be able to field a close to full-strength side to face the Blue Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday, with a number of key men expected to be passed fit.

Bok hooker Bismarck du Plessis, in the midst of a low-key comeback via the Currie Cup after neck surgery halfway through the Super 14, rolled his ankle against Griquas on Friday night, but is apparently not too serious and should be fine for the Loftus trip. While the Sharks have good backup in Craig Burden and Kyle Cooper, it would be better for the Sharks if the latter were able to carry on representing the under 21 side, who also face an absolutely crucial game at Loftus this weekend.

Locks Ross Skeate and Alistair Hargreaves were both missing last week, both as a result of groin strains (eeep!). While Mike Rhodes and Anton Bresler deputised superbly against Griquas, the regular locks are expected to return against the Bulls. Adding further depth, former Lions lock Gerhard Mostert has now come through a few weeks’ of club rugby and should be ready to come into the frame as well.

At the back, regular fullback Louis Ludik should also be fit to take his place after missing the Griquas game through concussion. He should take over from Monty Dumond, who played a caretaker role in the number 15 shirt last weekend.

  • I know that Steve M and Jean D both had pretty serious injuries, but does anybody have any new info regarding them? and if they received all the ‘get well soon’ messages?

  • That’s quite a bit of Lock depth we have there in Hargreaves, Sykes, Skeate, Mostert and Rhodes. Thought we’d miss Muller’s grunt and line-out presence, but it seems we’ve got the Lock stocks to more than deal with his departure.

Is there any news on Mapoe? I know Terblanche will see out the remainder of the CC at 13, but it would be nice to have him as an option.

Why is everyone stressing about Kanko and JP? I don’t think the Lions have as much in their kitty as people think. With such awful crowd attendance, relatively obscure sponsors and the fact that everyone in Joburg either wears Black and White or Blue (implying rubbish merchandise sales), from where would this money magically appear? Besides the draw of bigger bucks, what do the Lions have to offer that they don’t get at the Tank?

  • @MerckZ (Comment 11) : I recon the Lions made a killing for hosting the Soccer City test though.

  • @ruggabugga (Comment 8) : saw him play for SA schools and at cravenweek. real talented player. should wear the green and gold one day… Last i heard is that he is looking at his options, as he wants to stay at the cheetahs, but did not sign anything as such. You guys know if he signed or not?

i also know of a lad in Klerksdorp HS, the leopards cravenweek flyhalf, who signed with the sharks. Know his name is Vernon but according to the talk going around, also a scary talented player…

  • @Pokkel (Comment 14) : yip, its scary if you have a look at the all blacks, and what talent theyve got… Carter, Cruden, Slade, Brett and donald… But i think thats how the AB`s feel about our loose-forwards riches (except fetchers..).

i tried to find some info about the klerksdorp player but with no success.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : Are they really entitled to it? Won’t the majority of it go to SARU’s coffers, maintenance of the stadium and all those related expenses? Considering how much of that will be eaten up by the bureaucracy and the rest of the GLRU, is any of it going to be able to be put towards R4mil for Smit, R3mil each for Kanko and JP? One big test match does not a large bank balance make. I’d guess the Lions are running at a loss for most of the S14 and CC – I know the television rights are a lot, but it’s unsustainable with no crowd at all. Surely?

  • Guys KanCLOWNski is way overrated, Alberts is much better so it’s not an issue if he leaves. IMO he and meisiekind are in the same mould, look good at provincial level but can’t make the step…

  • Comment 18, posted at 31.08.10 12:52:46 by Zebra Reply

  • @Zebra (Comment 18) : Well, we are at provincial level, he doesn’t have to make that “step-up” if he’s performing for us at S15/CC level.

  • Comment 19, posted at 31.08.10 13:14:42 by MerckZ Reply

  • @Zebra (Comment 18) : sorry mate, cant agree with you. Alberts and kanko are two different types of players. Both of them very talented.
