Redelinghuys out for 9 months

The Sharks under 21 side has been dealt a bitter blow with the news that promising Baby Bok tighthead Julian Redelinghuys has been ruled out of all rugby for at least 9 months.

The former Monument pupil, who turned 21 last Saturday, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and will need to undergo an operation in Durban on Tuesday to repair the damage, meaning he’ll play no rugby for the Sharks until the 2011 Currie Cup at the earliest. Despite starting the season with a huge number of front-row options, the under 21s are now having to call on their depth, with hooker Kyle Cooper playing for the senior side and replacement tighthead Frans Hanekom also battling a knee injury. Into the fray steps Glenwood’s Dexter Fahey, who will wear the number 3 shirt alongside stalwart Dale Chadwick (loosehead) and the ever-reliable Hannes Snyman at hooker. Snyman played a fair bit of Vodacom Cup rugby this season and even managed to keep Cooper out of the under 21 side for a spell last year.

Stepping onto the bench for the under 21s this week is the massive Roy Godfrey, a prop from Selborne College who, at 1.89m and 116kg, will look to make a big impact against the Cheetahs. Another newcomer to the squad is loose forward Juan Language, whose uncle Walter is a regular poster on our site.

Swys de Bruyn’s charges will know that a victory against the Bloemfontein side is pretty much non-negotiable for them to keep pressure on runaway log leaders Western Province and the Blue Bulls, who are in second. The Sharks and Bulls both have games in hand over Province and things will certainly be tight at the top if both sides can win those. Should the Sharks lose to the Cheetahs, though, they’ll be right back in the chasing pack in a dog-fight to secure a semi-final.

Meanwhile, Sean Everitt’s Sharks under 19 side have made great progress up the log in recent weeks, after a less-than-inspiring start to the season. After beating the Bulls two weeks ago, they are now well-established in the top four and will want to consolidate that position by beating a Free State under 19 side that has, bizarrely, only managed a single in in this year’s competition. Our information is that phenomenal Grey and SA Under 18 flyhalf Johan Goosen will take the field for the young Cheetahs this afternoon, so the baby Sharks will need to keep a close eye on him. Top loose forwards Francois Kleynhans and Siseko Jafta should prove equal to the task, while centre Piet Lindeque will look to do the damage at the back.

  • Unfortunate kid: ACL injuries leave a permanent performance effect. Thankfully he doesn’t need speed at TH.
