Putting together a couple of pieces of news that are emerging, it starts to appear as though former Lions lock Gerhard Mostert will return to the Sharks squad to face his old team this weekend.
Mostert, who moved to the Sharks in the off-season after spending most of the 2009 season on the injury list, duly re-dislocated the same shoulder within 5 minutes of his Sharks debut, against the Chiefs in the Super 14. He has been involved in rehabilitation ever since and has come through a few weeks of club rugby unscathed.
With Ross Skeate out injured until at least the semi-finals and both Anton Bresler and Michael Rhodes released to play for College Rovers in the National Club Champs in Stellenbosch this week (Rhodes scored a try against UJ on Monday), Mostert seems a pretty clear candidate to make the squad this weekend, probably in the number 18 jersey. This is basically through a process of elimination, cos there’s nobody else!

Unless Alberts moves to 4 and sykes covers lock from the bench. Or Alberts cover lock and Botes comes into the starting XV…not that I’m saying that’s the case, just another possibility.
@Letgo (Comment 1) : if we go into the den with Keegan, Botes, Kanko and Skollie as our loose forwards, then I fear for Plums sanity.
I still haven’t seen Mostert play. Not even in his Lions days 😳
Nah, i think that trio would be just fine (friggin hope so). Its the reserves that i’m worried about. With Mostert on the bench, it will be good. Just in time to give another option for the finals.
He should go and grab the opportunity with both hands!
Mostert is a very good player, he even made the Bok training squad a few years ago. I hope he comes through this unscathed.
war1
Can you confirm how many games Marius has played in the last 2 years??
I’m sure its not much!!
@wpw (Comment 7) : Doesn’t matter this story is about GERHARD Mostert 😆
@war1 (Comment 8) :
Bwhahahahahahahaahhaahha
Oh dear! 🙁
Lag jy lekker oubaas?? 👿
@robdylan (Comment 2) : unimaginably this may be the answer ..
@war1 (Comment 8) : 😆
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Stranger things has happened!
I’m giving away tickets to the Lions vs Sharks game on my site, go to the forum here to be considered for the draw
http://www.lionsworld.co.za/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3275&PID=96647#96647
@walter van Lions World (Comment 15) : That’s cool dude 😎
@walter van Lions World (Comment 15) : sent my e-mail to you
Having Mostert there is a positive, hopefully he can come through the last couple of league games. But surely, Rhodes have been with the squad for the entire campaign! Why send him to play in the club champs (which I love by the way) if we regard the Lions game as VERY IMPORTANT TO SECURE TOP SPOT on the log?
Would a draw with a try bonus point not be enough? Maybe we can still pakistan the bulls out of this . . . 😈
Stefan needs to have a long talk with Franco me thinks
Then make dead sure we take 5 off the Leopards and before you can say Prooooovince we`re in a position to send the Wildebeeste on a weekend for 22 in the Magical MotherCity!
@Original Pierre (Comment 19) : I like the way you think…
@Original Pierre (Comment 19) :
nice… would be interesting to see the “wildebeest” side, as they usually have alot of u/21`s in that side and with the u/21s in their own comp we should see interesting selections IF we earn that luxury and IF they choose to put out a weaker team..
@VanWilder (Comment 21) : I will eat my hat if John Plumtree EVER sends a B team out onto the field in a competitive match
@robdylan (Comment 22) : Agreed and why should he? The Sharks should aim to win all their remaining games
@robdylan (Comment 22) : cant see that happening too. i`m going to newlands for that game, i will not be a happy camper if we send out a B side and we lost by 30 points… 😈
@VanWilder (Comment 24) : Sometimes you have to take one for the team hehehe
I would love for us to be in a position where we can afford not to worry about the province match. Imagine having our guys nice and rested before the semi finals against the bulls or dare I hope . . . Lions!
Sadly I don`t see it happening though.
@robdylan (Comment 22) : Don`t think it was Plum but I can recall a time in the past where the sharks send in some . . . dubious players against the Crusers in Christchurch cause we had no hope of beating them at the time. Think stars like Stephen Brink and Roger Smith featured! That really did happen so you want some mustard with that hat of yours Rob? 😈
@Original Pierre (Comment 25) : i think what rob is trying to say is that plum is one to stay with the tried and tested… for how long did we not petition for mvovo and lambie to start? maybe he will rest a few key players if thats the case but about 70-80% of the team will stay the same…
Looks like we will have Jannie du Plessis back this weekend as well
Keegs has had flu, apparently he should be OK by Thursday
I just think we need a lock that was a beast like Ackerman,when he was with us our rolling malls=unstoppable.well that is my take on it and I hope that maybe Mostert can be the one.
@Original Pierre (Comment 25) : that was Dick Muir, not Plum, so I’ll be passing that mustard right on back 🙂
You can see I am afrikaans with my spelling. 😳
Mapoe gets Bok blocked
2010-09-22 19:04
Bloemfontein – Springbok Sevens coach
Paul Treu requested the use of rogue
winger Lionel Mapoe for the upcoming
Commonwealth Sevens tournament, but
was refused by the Free State Rugby Union.
SuperSport.com can reveal that Treu had
accredited Mapoe on request of his agent
and the national selectors to be part of the
South African team for the tournament in
New Delhi, India, but the request was
turned down by the Cheetahs.
Mapoe has been in a contractual dispute
with the Cheetahs for six months now, and
will head to the High Court in Bloemfontein
on Thursday after he hasn ’t returned to the
city since losing the arbitration case in his
favour.
Treu confirmed the request, saying he
didn ’t want to get involved in the dispute,
but was looking to help the player get
some playing time while he was in limbo.
Mapoe is a Sevens Springbok and knows
both the structures and game plan of the
Sevens squad, and would have been a
welcome boost to South Africa ’s hopes of
getting a medal at the Commonwealth
Games.
“I just thought it would be the ideal chance
for him to get some time on the field,
which is valuable for a player like him who
hasn ’t played for some months. Naturally it
would also have aided us in our quest for a
medal in the competition, ” Treu told
SuperSport.com “I have to say that I am
disappointed, not only for ourselves but
also for Lionel, who needs to put this
behind him and get back onto the field
again. ”
Mapoe lost the arbitration dispute almost
two months ago, but has still been training
in Durban with the Sharks since declaring
his contract with the Cheetahs invalid. The
Cheetahs are disputing this and have asked
for a court interdict to compel Mapoe to
head back to Bloemfontein and join up
with his former province.
