Sorry for the appalling headline… (for those who don’t speak Afrikaans, “hof” means “court”!)
Anyway, according to news reports, Sharks number 8 Ryan “the Hoff” Kankowski, will attend a SARU disciplinary hearing at 12:00 tomorrow, to answer a charge of stamping, in contravention of Law 10.4(b). Kankowski, also known as “Definite” to his many fans, was yellow carded by referee Jason Jaftha for the incident in the 75th minute of the Sharks match against the Lions. Kankowski appeared to stamp on Lions replacement forward Trevor Hall.
Coach John Plumtree seems hopeful that the Hoff will get off, though, based on extenuating circumstances. The player was being illegally held in an offside position and appeared to strike out in frustration, in an attempt to free his leg. My personal view is similar… I thought it was a pretty harsh card and it would be quite unfair if Kankowski were censured further, given that the yellow card shown effectively cost his team the match.
We’ll update you on the results of the hearing tomorrow. Good luck, Hoffo! We’re all behind you, chap.

This means he will miss the breakfast??
Voldy is growing on you?? π
@Ice (Comment 1) : Missing breakfast is one thing . . . WP at Newlands, semi-final and possible finals quite another. . .
Sharks are not SARU`s favourite franchise at the moment with the Mapoe situation. They might throw the book at him. π
But I wanted his signature!! *sniff*
Hi all,
well Kanko we are behind u my friend lets just hope SARU disciplinary hearing is in a fair matter and not to get back at us for Mapoe π β
π π
Well, in about 10 minutes I’ll be boarding for Durbs, for the Shark Chick Breakast!! π
@Ice (Comment 6) :
Enjoy it chick!! En gedra jou hoor!! π π
@Ice (Comment 6) : π enjoy and hv fun π
@wpw (Comment 7) : Enjoy and Behave! Gotcha!
@Ice (Comment 6) : Sharks CHICK Breakfast….now that’s not very PC now is it Ice??
The card was pretty harsh in the first place. It isn’t malicious stamping more like trying to free his leg, even better is that you can see Hall hanging onto his leg.
http://bit.ly/cP27A7 – you can see the incident at 3:55.
Ref had to give a yellow.
You can’t stamp on a player no matter what. Just like you’re not allowed to punch, kick, gouge etc. π
In this case a yellow should suffice.
@McLovin (Comment 12) : Howzit McLovin…long time no see
@Pokkel (Comment 13) : Aloha. π
@McLovin (Comment 12) : Well lets put it this way. If any bulls player did something like that to a sharks player I`d be calling for a lifetime ban π
@Original Pierre (Comment 15) : and rightfully so. π
@McLovin (Comment 14) : At this rate your going to battle to get that 2nd platinum star π
Is there a reason Bezuidenhout wasn’t cited?
@McLovin (Comment 12) : hello gee its good to hear from you why so in the hidding π π
@Original Pierre (Comment 15) : so true but was it to free his leg or a punch their is ‘n diffs π
@McLovin (Comment 12) : Perhaps I am being a one eyed Sharks supporter but to me it looks more like he is trying to shake his foot loose than stamping
@lostfish (Comment 21) : Perhaps.
He should have fallen over whilst ‘accidentally’ stepping on the oke’s chest. Then he might have gotten away with no card.
@war1 (Comment 18) : The reason is that he didn’t deserve a card in the 1st place. One of the many cockups by the touch judges in this game.
Kankowski actually stamped on the guys chest BEFORE the guy grabbed his leg.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 24) : Hey who’s side are you on anyway? π―
Let me just state that knee rehab is SEEEEERIOUSLY kak….
@klempie (Comment 26) : serious??? π― i tore my knee ligaments about a year ago, but never operated on it. now i`m taking punishment and i made an appointment for at the doc to organise the op…
@VanWilder (Comment 27) : It is kak but at the end of the day it is worth it. It is many hours of physio, even more time spent doing exercises etc and more physio – and if you slack on your exercises they know π
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 23) : didnt he repeatedly punch a Sharks player? Which is supposed to be straight red? Not so?
@ KSA Pink Shark (comment 24)
The guy was holding Kankoβs one leg, Kanko got frustrated and used his free leg to try free himself. I agree it was stupid but we canβt look at this incident in isolation, we need to look at it in the context of the match. We had been on our try line for about 15 minutes, after Kanko made the tackle he wanted to get onside quickly so he help us defend, he was prevented from doing that, so he lost it. Flip van der Merve head butted someone, got cited and got off with a warning?
With regards to Mapoe, the anxiety is driving me up the wall. I understand our strategy though (let the arbitrator decide a fair transfer fee for a person on a junior contract) but we should have taken this route from the beginning. Does anyone have any info on this?
@GreatSharksays (Comment 30) : I think we will have to wait quite a while for this one to get sorted out. My feeling is that Lionel won’t play Currie cup this year.
Sheesh man. What a terrible call. Just watched it over and over again. The lines man was right there. He would have seen that the player was not stomping, but releasing a leg without any maliciousness whatsoever. The linesman ought to be called up on this, and sent back to training courses before being allowed to pass calls of this magnitude. It cost the Sharks rather dearly. Am I whinging?
@war1 (Comment 29) : π― π― π― repeatedly????? π― WOW π― π― π― π― π―
That is a MASSIVE GRAND CANYON STYLE leap from “he punched someone connecting on the body” Which is similar to what the TJ said.
I certainly didn’t see any footage of it, so the citing commissioner probably didn’t either
@rugbypedia (Comment 32) :
The video clip has been reduced in size and quality and I believe that the essential (from a prosecution point of view) bit has been lost with the reduction in quality. I watched this video (original on TV) a few times on SUPER slow mo and it sure as hell had kankowski stomping on the guys chest which this one doesn’e show clearly at all.
It’s almost as if the video had a frame rate 64frames per minute and now only 48 of those frames are being shown. It is clear that the video doesn’t tie up with the audio because of the reduction in frames being played back. It is more obvious at that stage of the video because of the refs audio of “8 please” coming a full 11 seconds after his hand signal for it.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 34) : I thought I saw that originally but then when I watched the youtube clip I thought maybe I hadn’t.
@lostfish (Comment 35) :
I hope the judiciary use THIS clip. π
@lostfish (Comment 35) :
OK I did not watch with sound. But even if it was at its full frame rate it is easily conceivable that the audio track could be out of sync. There are many number of causes for this, not all of which will point towards deleted/missing frames. Inferior compression codecs and crappy conversion software can easily do this. But I take your word, that you saw it with your own eyes, as proof enough. So thanks for that.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 36) : Me too. I went back to look at the original version and he does put his boot into Halls chest.
If Kanko does get suspended it won’t be such a train smash because we can put Keegan on at 8, but then who will be on the bench as loosie cover?
@lostfish (Comment 38) :
Good question, Justin Downey? π
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 39) :
Skoliwe Ndlovu?
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 34) :
Come to think of it, I remember during the game that we were on the wrong side of the pile of bodies to see. But it certainly appeared as if he was having a go at someone. It appeared to be far more aggressive at the time than this video shows.
@rugbypedia (Comment 37) : thanks. π
@rugbypedia (Comment 37) :
I don’t believe any frames were deliberately deleted or anything sinster like that, I just thinks that the compression was rather shabbily done and the vital bit got lost in the process.
Is Anton Bresler a lock or a loosie?
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 44) : pretty sure he is a lock.
Geez, guys…Kanko did not stomp. He did put his foot down on the players chest, but not with any force. If he stomped on the player, he would have had do go down on the players chest much harder than he did. His foot barely touched the players chest and imo he was of balance because the player was holding on to his leg, so it came down on the players chest, but us soon as he realized that he went down on the players chest he picked up his foot and hobbled on the other leg, until the player released him.
It’s a bit of a joke that Kanko is cited for this and even that he was yellowed. A better way to handle the situation would have been to talk to both players.
I have to say that during the match it did look like malicious stomping by Kanko. From that angle I wouldve given him a golden ticket to the cooler room.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 33) : I read that somewhere, didn’t see the punch myself.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 44) : he’s a lock
@Letgo (Comment 46) :
Don’t look at this video look at an unedited version, his foot landed very firmly and very completely on the guy’s chest.
@VanWilder (Comment 27) : @lostfish (Comment 28) :
I stuffed my knee treadmilling earlier this year. Went to a biokineticist to have it looked at and he’s given me these strength exercises and stretches. Takes me a bloody hour and 45 minutes to get through a program and I have to do it everyday for 4 weeks. Only a week into it. π Boring as hell.
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 34) : Itβs almost as if the video had a frame rate 64frames per minute and now only 48 of those frames are being shown.
Per minute eh? Well no WONDER the relevant footage is missing! π
@klempie (Comment 52) : look carefully… maybe the figures are made out of plasticine… π
@klempie (Comment 51) : how the hell do you bugger your knee on a treadmill? weakling! π
@robdylan (Comment 54) : He probably tried to jump on the treadmill AFTER he set it to full speed. π
@klempie (Comment 52) : Hehehehehehehe OOPS
@Pokkel (Comment 55) :
bwahahahahaha π
@wpw (Comment 57) : maybe is one of the okes that I’ve seen on Clipz doing that stunt. π
@Pokkel (Comment 55) : comment of the day so far
@robdylan (Comment 53) : BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
@robdylan (Comment 54) : I know. π
@Pokkel (Comment 55) : I like to challenge myself. π
@wpw (Comment 57) : En vir wie lag jy ou Pensie? Do you even know what a treadmill looks like? π
@klempie (Comment 63) : I think he might have eaten one once…
@robdylan (Comment 64) : π
@klempie (Comment 51) : not good – but what the hell were you doing with the treadmill?
@robdylan (Comment 64) : π
@lostfish (Comment 66) : Running too fast. π
@robdylan (Comment 64) :
FJELN!!! πΏ π₯
Apparently the verdict will only be delivered tomorrow…
@lostfish (Comment 70) : i thought by 12hoo today
@lostfish (Comment 66) : eeeee π
@chaz (Comment 71) : the hearing started at 12:00 today.
@lostfish (Comment 73) : thanks so verdict 2 morrow π³ π
@KSA Pink Shark Β© (Comment 50) : I did, and still don’t think Kanko actually stomped on the player, but rather just needed a place to put his foot down to balance himself.
