Coach John Plumtree has named a strong Sharks side to take on the Leopards in the Currie Cup on Friday evening. Former Bok flyhalf Andre Pretorius will spearhead the home side’s attempt to gain five points from the fixture, as he starts in the number 10 jersey for the first time.

The team shows a fair few changes to the unit that narrowly lost to the Lions last week and for Plumtree, you get the feeling that this week’s game gives him a last opportunity to try out some different combinations ahead of the semi-finals. Bok tighthead Jannie du Plessis has been named to start, with regular number 3 Eugene van Staden moving over to the loosehead side. Having two regular tightheads in the run-on side gives Plumtree the opportunity to pick Pat Cilliers on the bench, and it will be good to see what sort of impact he can have coming on in the second half.

Second rower Gerhard Mostert starts in the number 5 jersey, after missing out on 6 months of rugby due to injury. Alistair Hargreaves is enjoying a complete rest this week. Keegan Daniel moves from 6 to 8 and captains the side, while Ryan Kankowski has been bracketed on the bench, pending the result of his disciplinary hearing. Should he be ruled out, Mike Rhodes will wear 19 with Anton Bresler coming in. Rhodes will be the lock replacement if the Hoff is cleared to play.

Jacues Botes starts in the number 6 jersey in the only other change to the pack.

Injured captain Stefan Terblanche makes way for Riaan Swanepoel in midfield, with Dries Strauss shifting from 12 to 13 as a result. Apart from that change, Pretorius swapping places with Pat Lambie (on the bench this week) is the only other change to the backline. Zuks Vulindlu comes into the squad for Terblanche and will wear the number 22 jersey.

The Sharks
15. Louis Ludik 14. Odwa Ndungane 13. Andries Strauss 12. Riaan Swanepoel 11. Lwazi Mvovo 10. Andre Pretorius 9. Charl McLeod 8. Keegan Daniel (capt) 7. Willem Alberts 6. Jacques Botes 5. Gerhard Mostert 4. Steven Sykes 3. Jannie du Plessis 2. Craig Burden 1. Eugene van Staden
Replacements 16. Kyle Cooper 17. Patric Cilliers 18. Anton Bresler / Michael Rhodes 19. Michael Rhodes / Ryan Kankowski 20. Rory Kockott 21. Patrick Lambie 22. Luzuko Vulindlu

  • I am glad that they didn’t shift Lambie to 12. Lambie could do with a bit of a break on the bench.

Good to get Pretoors to have a decent run. He hasn’t looked very good in the brief appearances he has made so far. I live in hope he still has a few good game left in him!

  • I think this would have been a good game to give a number of players a rest going into the semi-finals. Alberts, Burden, and McLeod could do with a rest and there are good players to step into their shoes. Rhodes, Cooper and Kockott should have been given the confidence-booster of a start send the signal to first-choice players that their positions are under constant review. But firstly, of course, we have to win this match with four tries!

  • Actually, I’m kinda hoping for a bad game from him, I know it’s not very nice, but AP can have great games and then he has horrible ones also. It’s better if he has his horrible one now. If he has a great game now, he might convince Plum to use him more in the important games and that would be a real nightmare.

I never made actual notes of every mistake he has made, but clearly I made a couple of mental notes, because seeing that guy in a Sharks jersey just scares me.

  • @ruggabugga (Comment 54) : Dude, Plum has played many players that I felt he shouldn’t. Do you remember the Epi Taione debacle. I was one of the people who cringed when I saw our semi-final line-up for the 2008 s14.

I also never agreed with his Springbok selection. Not that SA had that many options at the time, but he did keep Butch out for a while.

Coaches doesn’t always select the best team. Think back through the years, there’s many players who should never have worn the Bok jersey and a couple who should never have worn the Sharks jersey.

Just because a coach picks them, doesn’t mean they’re good enough for the job.

  • Like that some of the players are being rested, but I would of like to of seen Vulindlu with a start, as well as Rhodes.

    My Starting XV:
    1. Van Staden – Plum’s idea, i’m just going with it!
    2. Burden – Need some experience on the field.
    3. Du Plessis – Needs game time after injury.
    4. Sykes – IF Plum really didn’t want to rest Alberts, then I would of slotted him in here.
    5. Mostert – Same as Du Plessis
    6. Botes – We also need to have this hard-worker on the field in big matches!
    7. Rhodes – The newcomer hasn’t had much game time, should give him an extended run.
    8. Daniel (c) – Will be the spark in the backrow with Kanko missing and of course you need your captain on the field.
    9. Kockett – Not the quickest at the rucks but no point in spending McLeod in a match against the Leopards.
    10. Pretorius – Has had bits and pieces, lets see what he can do with a whole cake.
    11. Vulindlu – I believe he is a winger, haven’t seen him play so lets so what he’s got.
    12. Swanepoel – Giving Straus a break, lets see what Swanepoel has in the tank.
    13. Mvovo – Not my idea to play him at outside center but i like the idea so lets c if it pays off.
    14. Ndungane – Can’t exclude this hard-worker.
    15. Ludik – Tempted to shift Lambie to fullback, but he (Lambie) does need a break.

    16. Cooper – Gave Burden a start coz I felt nervous about to much young blood in the team, but if all is going well should bring him on the the second half and give him a 40 minute game.
    17. Cilliers – Van Staden took his starting spot and rightfully so but wouldn’t keep him out of the team.
    18. Bresler – Needs some game time, and perhaps should maybe start ahead of Sykes.
    19. Alberts – You want him to come and bash it up in the final 20 when the Leopards are tired.
    20. McLeod – needs a break.
    21. Lambie – same as McLeod.
    22. Strauss – Wanna c what Swanepoel has.
