The Sharks team to face Western Province in the last round of league action has been named, with some key players getting a week off and the returning Springboks getting back into the action.

Young Pat Lambie makes a first time return to the fullback position, replacing Louis Ludik. Captain fantastic Stefan Terblanche returns to the starting team after playing waterboy last weekend, replacing Riaan Swanepoel, who falls out of the 22 man team completely. Andre Pretorius retains the flyhalf spot, but is partnered by Rory Kockott this time.

In the forwards is where the full force of the returning Boks is felt, with the front row bolstered by both Tendai β€˜the Beast’ Mtawarira and Bismarck β€˜the other Beast’ du Plessis packing down with Jannie du Plessis. Gerhard Mostert shifts to 4 to replace Sykes who gets a break, with Hargreaves back in the team after his week off. The loosies are a brand new formation with Ryan Kankowski coming back from his conditioning program and flanking him will be Rhodes and Botes, Willem Alberts and Keegan Daniel getting a bit of a break.

On the bench we will all be delighted to see Adrian Jacobs returning after a very long absence. Burden drops to the bench with Kyle Cooper roped in to help his U21 buddies secure top spot on their log. The impressive van Staden gains a place on the bench and should get a decent run. Louis Ludik and Charl McLeod covers the other backline positions.

15. Patrick Lambie
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Stefan Terblanche (Captain)
12. Andries Strauss

  • I think Lambie at 15 could pay off.

It will still include him in the game yet we have the golden boot of Pretorius.

Just a shame that Ludik cannot be in the team, he is a superstar that boy..

  • Lambie/Aplon – Maybe Aplon, but it’s close imo

Odwa/JDV – On the wing, I’d go for Odwa any day

Stefan/Fourie – Well Fourie is probably the best 13 in the world right now, so he wins this one, but he won’t run holes through Oupa.

Dries/Jdj – De Jongh no doubt, but again, dries can defend.

Mvovo/Habana – Habana is lankal oor die muur. Mvovo to score 2 tries.

AP/De waal – Even though I don’t like Pretorius, De waal is just a liability and AP did have a good game last week.

Rory/Ricky – Again, I don’t think Rory is a great scrummy, but he’s better than ricky and on a good day, he can win matches.

Kanko/Duane – WP supporters will pick Duane here, but Kanko’s better.

Rhodes/Flow – It has to go to Wp here, Rhodes is a good player, but
    still inexperienced.

Botes/Schalk – So I’ll give this one to schalk, but I’d rather have Botes in my team.

    Al/Anton – I think Al’s a better player overall. This one’s very even.

Mostert/Fondse – Mostert just came back from injury, but Fondse has very little impact on matches.

Jannie/Blaw – With recent performances Jannie has provev that he’s one of the best in SA

Bissie/Deon – Young exciting talent for WP, but Bissie’s gonna smash him.

Beast/??? – Beast is better than your guy, what’s his name.

So, 5 for WP – Aplon, Fourie, De Jongh, Louw and Schalk.

10 for Sharks – Odwa, Mvovo, AP, Rory, Kanko, Hargreaves, Mostert, Jannie, Bismark, Beast.

  • Well this is going to be intresting to say the least. I agree that the players left out deserve a rest. With the play-off around the corner and top spot secured I really don’t think risking key players are worth it. I’ve read that some posters would rather play Province then the Bulls in the Semi’s, but I think this could back fire. The bulls have just got their “key players” back and have not played in this years CC. They will only have the Griquas game to prepare and then straight into the play-offs. And I would prefere facing them sooner, rather then later.

O yes and GO SHARKS!!! πŸ˜‰

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) :

    Who exactly is he resting?

    Keegan will most likely play.
Both the wings have payed quite a bit of rugby.
Lambie is not exactly resing at fullback.
Ludik will in all likelihood come on in the second half.

    Whats the point?

  • I recon the weak points in the WP team will be on the wings. Habana will be going for n intercept sooner or later and JdV will be caught out of position on his wing. JdV is just not comfortable at wing.

  • Thinking about this. This is actually a very good side. See last time we played province, everyone expected our running game, keep possession amd let the other team do the tackles. We did do that. For the 1st half. Then in the second half, we brought Rory on, who is a much better fowards dominating scrum-half, we switched to keeping the ball with the forwards, and bashing through with the phases. We dominated. We got front foot ball. And secured the win.

With this team, we can do the same. If plan A fails ( bash it through with our forwards and playing it tight) we can switch to our dangerous Ball in hand approach which is Plan B. Wonder how many plans WP have?? πŸ˜•

  • Slow down guys: to much confidence here. WP are talented and desperate: deadly combination.

I reckon they will win – we historically tend to lose games we don’t need have heavily-vested interests in.

  • @Letgo (Comment 18) : Remember that tackle that Terblance made on Fourie during the Super 14?
Fourie recieves the ball and comes running straight into Terblanche. Fourie was then running…. backwards!

And how do you rate the bench?

Would of made 3 catagories where the very even ones would be put. Kanko and Duane for examples is quite 50/50 imo

Very good Sharks team, and we’ll see how we do without Willem Alberts on the field. A bit uneasy about messy around with Lambie. He played fullback-center-flyhalf and now he’s being bumped back to fullback and possibly back to flyhalf in the semi’s. Not good messing him around.
