Yawn… stretch… whatever.
Lions fans will tell you that they need to win big here because there’s still a mathematical chance they could qualify for the semis.

Someone has to say it, are the Lions really any better this year than they were last year? Sure they are getting the publicity with Mitchell coaching, but the results look no different from last year. And the year before for that matter.
Before tonights games.

Lions 14 7 39
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 146) : It is amazing how many bonus points the Sharks have scored this season. Everyone is quite critical of the Sharks, saying they often don’t finish, but they must be creating many more scoring opportunities then, because they have won a majority of their games with bonus points, and even earned 4 bonus points from the three losses.
DB: your chirp went waaay over wpw’s head. π
I’m guessing no Lions fans for a few months now…
@lostfish (Comment 137) : π
@wpw (Comment 139) : Sudden death? I am not sure how the tie breaker will be determined this season but we HAVE come up with a good way of getting it done for future competitions.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 147) :
So true. And the difference between us and the 2nd placed Cheetahs who have won the same amount of games is then the BPs we have scored. 5
@Big Fish (Comment 148) : π so how vindicated do you think JPP feels right now.
And John Smit for that matter. Sorry Waylon, you should never have moved boet.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 150) : With one more game scored, we, more than likely will pick up a bonus point in this game (odds are), so will have 6 more than them.
@lostfish (Comment 109) : assistant referee π

The Sharks have also scored 4 more bonus points than the much hyped Province backline.

@Dancing Bear (Comment 155) :
TRY BPs in 9 Games for the Sharks
Only Griquas have matched that.
9 Sharks, Griquas
7 Lions
6 Cheetahs, Pumas, WP
5 Blue Bulls
2 Leopards
DB, like you said, they are just also-rans again this season, despite the hype.
Could well get better post-2011, but the interesting thing about the new rugby landscape is that Rands can’t buy you much experienced talent – those chasing the dough go abroad rather.
Focus for success must be on scouting talent before its well-established, as well as building a franchise that players want to play for.
They have some way to go on these keys.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 157) : sharks 12 BPs in the season, cheetahs 7, wp 8, bb 10
@rekinek (Comment 159) : griquas also 12 bps
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 157) : Amazing how a good hard look at the numbers often leads to a very different perspective on things. I’m sure the Sharks have allowed less TRY bonus points scored against them as well. A combination of very strong attack and defense. Nice to see and looking forward to see how this style of play works against the tougher opposition that the returning Boks will provide.
I’m dead π and soooo happy about it. Suck on that, Snoil! For the second time today
@Big Fish (Comment 158) : The Lions have no Academy, no real way to keep young talent in the area.
@Big Fish (Comment 158) : It is also important to provide a culture that makes the players want to stay. JPP is an excellent example of that, nice to see at the Sharks. The Lions have a very long way to go to develop that culture, what with getting rid of or losing almost every ounce of experience they had.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 151) : at least the guy is getting some game time. had a good day today.
@rekinek (Comment 165) : I always thought Waylon would make a good 12, if given the chance. He was given plenty game time at the Sharks, but went into a terrible slump, then got injured, and never really showed anything again on the pitch, nobody to blame but himself for lack of game time. But hey, if he would rather have game time with a half rate outfit, then good luck to him.
okay…did not see this one coming….need to rethink my high opinion of the Lions… π
@Ice (Comment 167) : looking at the results, you can’t tell the difference between Loffie and Mitch. But all the hype surrounding Mitchell is what is carrying him right now, certainly not the results.
@rekinek (Comment 153) : splitting hairs now… π
@Dancing Bear (Comment 168) :
extremely dissapointing to say the least…seems like a last flutter of the moth was the case past few weeks.. π
@Dancing Bear (Comment 166) : Lions may not be the best but at least he will have exposure to S15 and CC.
With the Sharks he lost his place – even on the bench due to injuries, so Vodacom Cup ? It’s a pity he’s gone but better for the guy.
I always felt Waylon didn’t get enough faith from the coaches after his injury. Played at wing, and behind Stef at 13.
Must be said though, while he remains a superb defender, he STILL runs sideways each time. π
@Ice (Comment 170) : I don’t want to be too harsh on Mitchell, he has only been coaching this one CC season and he has brought through some very talented youngsters, however, based on results, he must be surviving on reputation now.
Rekinek, been meaning to find out: are you in the legal field?
Thats the lions we know.
@Big Fish (Comment 172) : He does have a tendency to crab across the field a lot, and takes away a lot of space from his line.
@Ice (Comment 167) : perhaps one should give some credit to Pumas.
it was quite an exciting game all in all
@Big Fish (Comment 172) : Also, after his injury, he developed this silly stutter step every time he got the ball, it slowed him down just a bit and gave the defense the time they needed to adjust. Not sure where that came from.
@Big Fish (Comment 174) : yip … but don’t tell anyone π
@rekinek (Comment 171) : I don’t wanna say anything nice about the Lions!!! π π π
@Dancing Bear (Comment 173) : I think people got so used to Lions loosing that when they actually won few games this type of hype was inevitable.
I mean they beat sharks I think first time since 2007 semis.methinks
Also, if I had to choose between Lambie and Jantjes at this stage of their careers, I am definitely going for Lambie, simply because he is a part of a winning culture, and is an integral part of a winning team. Jantjes kept a losing team in the hunt for most of the season.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 180) : i see π
@rekinek (Comment 181) : I agree, but remember, the Lions always beat one or two of the big teams every season. It has not been the Sharks for a while, but they have beaten the Bulls, WP and the Cheetahs in the past few years under Loffie, so even that is not any different this year. I honestly think the hype is purely because Mitchell is there, the results are no different.
DB: I think he must be worried about re-injury, and therefore doesn’t run straight into contact anymore. Seems to not realise just how big he is anymore.
Rekinek, may I ask what it is do you do? Always good meeting others from the fraternity.
@rekinek (Comment 177) :
Reks
@Dancing Bear (Comment 184) : I’m not enjoying saying this, I don’t want to see the Lions do badly, especially want to see them do well in the Super 15 against foreign opposition. One thing they do have going for them is their youthfulness, with all the super young talent that came through this year, the future does look quite bright for them, assuming they can hold onto them.
@Ice (Comment 186) :
wheres my post??
did not see the game..perhaps my too high hopes for a Lions (huge) win was too much – clouded judgement…sorry Pumas! π
I tend 2 get xited for other teams if they seem to get on track..
@Ice (Comment 189) : I’m not nice like you are, I only care if the Sharks are on track. π π
@Dancing Bear (Comment 182) :
i doubt if he’ll be there 4 much longer – but with the injection they got, perhaps he would…but if they keep a losing culture, doubt he’ll b staying 4 2 long
@Dancing Bear (Comment 184) : true. I was thinking more of their most recent history – like no win at all during S14. In 2007 and 2008 they made CC semis at least. Last year was bad bad bad.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 190) :
if someone is better on track than the |Sharks,i am with u ! my ‘being on track” means taking out the Bulls out contention..
@rekinek (Comment 192) : embarassing actually.
@Big Fish (Comment 185) : in practice .. commercial mainly agreements.
@Ice (Comment 186) : yeeees.. ?
@rekinek (Comment 196) :
@Dancing Bear (Comment 187) : i was actually getting excited about Pumas. At least they got some wins this season, have a sponsor. Good to see some fighting spirit, they were not going to let the Lions walk over them.
I’m embarrassed to think that there was a chance for Lions to get the semis.
Cool. I used to that too.
I used to back the Lions cos they were underdogs. Still feel for them, but less so thanks to some of their fans.
Still reckon WP fans are the coolest from another team. Other than on keo.
@Big Fish (Comment 199) : It is the coastal attitude. π π
@rekinek (Comment 198) : I too am happy for the Pumas, and don’t think they have much chance of losing the relegation matches. Leopards on the other hand…….
@Dancing Bear (Comment 201) : yip. Heard Cobus Wiese talking on All Out Rugby that they should give unions the same amount of money to be competitive. I am in full disagreement with such socialistic approach and don’t think there is anything wrong in some advantages for unions that have a bit of business acumen. But having said that – would be really good to have 8 competitive teams.
@rekinek (Comment 159) :
@rekinek (Comment 160) :
Overall yes.
My post is refering to TRY BPs, the rest of the BPs are loss BPs. π
Hi
What a game Snoils wern’t the same team that played last week at all
and to top it i had them for 15
remind me never to pick them again cost me a point at the end πΏ
where is GREG he was always a big one when they won gone in hiding when they lose πΏ
Try next year LIONS really got a year to pic up the goods π
@rekinek (Comment 202) : I watched All Out Rugby, and I don’t think that Wiese said all teams should get the same amount of money. What he did talk about was a salary cap, similar to what all North American professional sporting codes have. Generally the salary caps are far more complicated than each team having the same amount of money to spend. For example, in the NFL, each franchise designates a certain number of “franchise players” each season, and the salary of those players does not count toward the salary cap. I don’t believe in socialistic approach, however, the only way for the smaller unions to become competitive would be to institute some sort of salary cap.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 205) : When talking salary caps, drafts etc we need to look honestly at South Africa vs USA. 300 million vs 50 million. 5 million people with enough money to pay tax vs a rather rich 1st world country with disposable income.
Sports marketing is multi billion in the US. All games are sell outs, the shear volume of people makes this so.
We can’t get a quarter full stadium at games. And in the US the sports entertainment industry already pays the guys millions. And playing for the Lakers or Chicago Bulls doesn’t really make a difference.
Playing for the Bulls or the Falcons does.
Salary cap in a small market like this and a draft – players all bail to europe and I would too.
Only way is to accept that the large Unions will always be large and that they will draw from all over the country.
Now get the large Unions into grass roots development sure, but also see who is responsible for what and where. Make the schools accountable for sports, provide equipment and coaches?
But salary caps and drafts are daft.
We would also be clever to realise that Currie Cup 1st Div and Super rugby is not just rugby any more. It is Sports Entertainment. Wrestling with rules and no predetermined outcomes.
But I pay, you play. Bang for buck. rugby stops at club and U21 level. All else is professional entertainment on a sports field for cash.
@goyougoodthing2 (Comment 206) : You introduce a transfer fee payable from the buyer to the buyee and the smaller unions can then become the game’s skills developers and make a business out of it.
Makes so much sense. Of course, anything that makes sense is alien to the powers-that-be. They seem to fear normality.
@Baldrick (Comment 208) : Explain a bit more please.
The smaller Unions don’t have money correct? So you want the bigger Unions to pay transfer fees when purchasing from smaller Unions?
Makes sense. But then the smaller Unions won’t be able to purchase big names from the big Unions because they have no money. And transfer fees from a smaller Union to bigger would be less as the player would, normally, be younger, untested, etc.
If I were a big Union I’d then sign the new player at X, pay the transfer on X and then renegotiate to XX when player arrives π
And the agent would know this. Sneaky.
Anyway, let me know how you see it working, the logistics, maybe I am missing something?
Was at the game yesterday evening and its not a good way to be starting a “a new era” ..The Lions just looked pedestrian ..Credit to Pumas though they have had very good season.
@goyougoodthing2 (Comment 209) : GYGT2 – the point is, those unions have been small for the last 100 years, so they can only benefit from the system where they get a cut out of developing players. Imagine the Pumas if they had been paid out when the sharks got Botes, Wannenburg, Jacques Schutte from them a few years back?
The agents would still take comm, but possible smaller percentages from the union + player so he still gets the same cut, but the union now gets a fee and the player is less out of pocket.
Imagine the Lionel Mapoe saga if this were the case (although in this case, it’s the law of contract vs ethics and legalised slavery).
What player do you know of wants to move from say the sharks to EP? Only if they are not making the side or are coming to the end of their careers as in someone like de wet barry.
My point is that the likes of Boland, EP, Pumas, Griffons, etc haven’t stayed small because of a lack of money but a lack of big thinking. (oops, had to edit this)
Same reason why, under the present dictatorial style that exists at Free State where they openly admit they haven’t the money of the Sharks, Bulls, WP, they will remain small because for them, rugby is rugby, not business.
@CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 210) : Mitchell must have been supremely peed-off at his players. Showing no heart. A new era for some.
@CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 210) :
Hey OU.
sorry for the flak you guys are taking but some of your boys have been on here giving us a hard time in recent weeks. π
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 213) :
LOL I never quite understood how Lion supporters can be so outspoken ..its going on 10 years now since we have had any forn of success π
This investment is NOT going to change our fortunes anytime soon ..given the poor attendence last night its obvious that its going to take us winning on a consistent basis before we’re taken seriously again.
I have to add though that Mitchell tenure cannot be compared to the likes of Ludeke and Loffie ..they sat with some Boks and very good players at their disposal.Whereas Mitchell has had to very quickly put a team together of no name brands and I feel he has done a brilliant job.
On the plus side having to pick from the Pumas side for the Super series could be of benefit.
Long straws I know π
@goyougoodthing2 (Comment 209) : True but big names won’t go to play at a smaller union. The big names will stay at a bigger union where there is more money to pay his salary. The only time he would go to a smaller union is like in the case of de Wet Barry or Solly T.
@lostfish (Comment 215) and goyougoodthing2 – I would think the thinking with transfer fees would be relatively easy to set up and run. Avoid salary caps like the plague because unlike American Football and other games they are world champions of a game only they play, they can’t very well go overseas like our rugby players can.
@CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 214) :
π
i would actually love to have a look at the CC figures for ’07, ’08 & 09 from a Played, Won, lost point of view to see how they really stack up.
@Baldrick (Comment 216) : Not a bad idea indeed. Transfer fees means more money to develop in the smaller Unions and better development for the bigger Unions.
Now I would, as a big Union, agree to this with one condition:
The current system of voting where the small Unions have more say than the big would have to end.
The tail wags the dog at the moment. So agree to change the structure of the Presidents’ Council and then agree to transfer fees.
