Victor Matfield was on Friday named as captain of the Springbok end-of-year tour on the first day of a preliminary training squad get together. Springbok coach Peter de Villiers made the announcement at a media conference and also confirmed that Juan Smith would be the tour vice-captain.
“With John Smit being injured and unavailable for such a challenging and important tour we obviously needed Victor’s leadership qualities,” said De Villiers “He has filled the role in the past with distinction and has led the Vodacom Bulls and Blue Bulls to a string of titles and has been Springbok vice-captain for a number of years.
“We’re aware of his workload this season and we’ll manage him accordingly.”
Vodacom Cheetahs captain Juan Smith was named as vice-captain for the four Test tour which concludes with a match against the Barbarians at Twickenham on December 4. The first day of the training camp concentrated on gameplan with meetings and field sessions for forwards and backs.
Six Absa Currie Cup finalists and Vodacom Blue Bulls utility forward Danie Rossouw took no part in Friday’s field session as a precaution because of injury niggles. The rested players were: Juan de Jongh, Danie Rossouw, Jannie du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Willem Albert, Bismarck du Plessis and Schalk Burger.

There is no sense in taking Matfield over to the UK. If he breaks down before the WC we are a bit screwed.

@McLovin (Comment 11) : at least he got his 100
The only time I remember Victor captaining the Boks we’ve been outplayed and lacked commitment.
I’d’ve preferred them giving it to Juan Smith.
@lostfish (Comment 12) : He’s on fire this year so far.
755 ODI runs at an average of 107.85 😎

HEY!!!!!!!!!! You guys are making this thread look like we are happy to see Queen Victoria lead a strike force to the Empire.
So that’s two senior players confirmed to be going on tour. LMAO
@KSA Shark © (Comment 24) : More like ignoring it in the hope he would go away and rest.
He should have been left at home and Smith should have captained the troops.
Victoria has been a shadow of his former self, it would have been a good opportunity to give Hargo a run and to give him the experience needed in case we have injuries before the WC. He outplayed Victoria in the semi.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 17) : it’s ON like Donkey Kong 🙂
Morkel out.
37 runs 21 balls
355/5
46.4 overs
@VinChainSaw (Comment 29) : b
Well, it was always going to be either him or Smith.
Hopefully this means that the loosies and backs will be more experimental -Smith wont have to play every game for starters.
tried to paste the pic in the comment section – sadly I’m no longer able! Where DavidS when you need him…

Almost!
Wouldve been only the third time we’ve ever got over 400.
Oh well, well done boys nevertheless. Liked seeing (well reading about) the young lads wielding the willow towards the end.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 42) : Miller is going to be a great.
Cricket again? Sigh.
@robdylan (Comment 44) : 😈

Does anybody know when Smit will be fit for duty 🙂
But then its nmaybe a good think to rest him and some other players before the WC 2010, but one Q what is going to happen to the S15 need i ask we did so well without our boks so we should do well in the S15 😕 but on the other end CC is a SA comp not a globe comp and that changes a lot of thinks 😉
