Show some love for Dries Strauss

I’ve just had an awesome idea.

A few days back, I got in touch with Andries Strauss to discuss his feelings on playing his last game for the Sharks in the Currie Cup Final. Well, we all know what happened and what a memorable final fling it was for Dries, as his defensive performance ensured that the Sharks walked away with the golden cup this year.

Well, it’s obviously hell of sad that Andries is leaving the team, but I feel that we, as fans, haven’t always given him as much respect as he deserves. I know that mere words cannot ever really make amends, but let’s try. Let’s use this thread to collect messages of appreciation, support and good luck for all that Dries has done for the Sharks and for his future career.

I will leave this running for a few days an send the messages on to Andries, which hopefully will serve as a nice memento of his time at the Sharks and let him know just how much we, as fans, appreciate his contribution. Don’t hold back, Sharks fans. We are saying goodbye to a part of our family.

  • Tackle of the century on Vermeulen.

Never seen a guy being tackled out of his boots. Both boots.

    Will never forget that. 😆

  • Cheers Andries. I’ve always felt better when you were in the team, knowing that there was at least one player that will give his all on the field, never give up, even if the cause was lost and would always try his best to win the game. You were one of the guys who I always thought would bleed for your fellow players and the jersey, no questions asked.

It gave me a lot of joy to see you tackling the living crap out of basically everybody in South African rugby this season. You put in some monster hits buddy!

I understand why you are leaving, but we’re gonna miss you.

Best of luck at the Cheetahs and may your career go from strength to strength.

Your loyalty and dedication to the team were not always recognized nor appreciated, but you will always be remembered for your outstanding defensive efforts in the 2010 Currie Cup campaign, especially in the semi and in the final. Good luck at the Cheetahs, I am sure you will become a tackling legend there, just as you have here in KZN.

  • Andries,

Well done on an awesome season! It must have been frustrating waiting so long to have a chance to shine – knowing you could do so much more than many fools (myself certainly included) gave you credit for.

Much respect to you for never giving up, for never losing your faith in yourself, and your loyalty to your team.

I could spend lots of time lauding a great rugby performance by you – and believe me, it was great. But I think I would rather speak of the strength of character, the loyalty, faith, and commitment that you showed.

These are so much more important – because you are not born with that – you chose to espouse those values. And long after your physical strength and rugby skill have faded, these are the qualities that will still continue to define you, and earn you the respect of admiring mortals like myself.

I wish you all the very best – thank you for showing me that we can still have heroes amongst all the money, endorsements and tell-all autobiographies.

You got the team together from what I heard and told them that you are going to play like it’s your last game for the Sharks ever and you asked your team mates to play like it was their last games ever for the Sharks. I recon in doing THAT you inspired not only your team mates but ultimately every Sharks fan and everybody who loves the game of rugby. I have never witnessed a more commited performance by a TEAM ever and you were the the spark that lit the fire. Truely inspirational stuff. We’re sad to see you go but wish you all the best for the future!! LEGEND!!

  • Andries

Let me lay the cards on the table and say that not only have I been one of the many people to have doubted your abilities, but that I have also been so disillusioned with the Sharks in recent years that I stopped watching their games (although I did still follow the results in the media and on this site; I could never divorce myself completely). However, this season the team’s performance has been so compelling that I have found myself (reluctantly at first) being drawn to watching the games again, culminating in last week’s glorious final. Central to that performance has been your Herculanean efforts in the midfield.

However, had consistent excellence on the field been all you had demonstrated, I would not have felt the need to register on this site so that I could post this message. What has spoken to me is the strength of character that has been on show through the performances; commitment, loyalty and dedication to the team and an unrelenting will to give your best regardless of the adversities you faced. These are qualities that define the man, not just the rugby player.

I would wish you good luck in all your future endeavours, except that I do not believe that you need it. Suffice to say that never have I been happier to be proven wrong in my assessment of a person, and never have I been sadder at a player leaving the Sharks.

We will have many future games to celebrate the success of the Sharks players, but this is the last we will have to celebrate a season from a man who has been over-looked for far too long, but still showed great character in the cauldron.

Keep the rationalising for later – this is a thread for wearing your heart on your sleeve.

Thank you for putting your heart into the Sharks. Thanks for your unwavering commitment to the jersey. But most of all thank you for putting so many of the opposition on their arses.

There are many people who believe that you should be wearing the 12 jersey for the Boks in Europe this Saturday. I am one of the biggest supporters of that sentiment. Who knows, it might be sooner than we think.

Maybe other players should have received similar fanfare, but just because we neglected to do so should not stop us from celebrating Dries’ accomplishments. Also, I believe that Dries played a pivotal role in the turnaround of the team, and I am not just referring to the on-field performances. Sure, we also won the cup in 2008, but when last did the Sharks exude the cameraderie that is so palbably visible at present?

I do not think that “shown commitment way beyond the call of duty” should be applicable. If you don’t do things 100% why bother and it applies to all. Perhaps, because I was never a Dries critic I do not have much need to plead “you proved me wrong now”. Anycase my point was not about not giving Dries a proper send off.
