Gurthrö Steenkamp was on Monday named as the South African Rugby Union Player of the Year for the 2010 season.

The Blue Bulls prop captured the crown at the end of a fabulous domestic season during which he helped his side claim their third Super 14 title.

Steenkamp’s sublime performances for the Springboks this year, as well as his efforts for the Bulls, saw him claim the award ahead of some outstanding competition.

Also nominated were Gio Aplon (Western Province), Juan de Jongh (WP), Francois Hougaard (Bulls) and Schalk Burger (WP).

Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies was named as Young Player of the Year; the Bulls were Team of the Year and Allister Coetzee was chosen as Coach of the Year among the other main awards – which are voted for by rugby journalists.

Western Province wing Gio Aplon was selected by his peers as Players’ Player of the Year.

Jantjies claimed a second award on Monday as the SA Under-20 Player of the Year, following his outstanding performances for the Baby Boks at this year’s IRB Junior World Championships in Argentina – where they ended the tournament in third position.

  • These awards are laughable.

A flyhalf who played well but who only played in six/seven matches compared to a young flyhalf/fullback who started a team’s turnaround in the Super 14 and whose involvement culminated in a Currie Cup title and the guy with six games and no titles wins. What a joke!!

And then best coach to a coach whose team won NOTHING! The Coach should at least be either Frans Ludeke or John Plumtree or hell even John Mitchell who improved a team which didn’t have superstars like Bryan Banana and the “world’s best centre” playing for him.

Of course, I don’t agree with the best player either. Didn’t see Guthro do anything special to win best player but then no one on the short list were particularly fantastic.

    What a joke!!

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 14) : Alistair Coetzee won NOTHING. He made to to two finals but the WP chequebook brought in superstar players. You don’t have to be a great coach to do that, you only have to pitch up. Hell, I can’t remember the name of the Griquas but he would probably do better with a team of superstars and proper depth than old AC.

Obviously many do not agree with me.

  • Comment 28, posted at 02.11.10 10:25:20 by Morné Reply
  • @Morné (Comment 27) : Super 14 probably carries more weight being the international competition. I still believe if we played against the NZ and Aus teams like we did against our own, they would cry off injured.

Unfortunately, every season by one of the big 5 teams is always defined by silverware. There is only one exception to this rule:
    – if you’re trying to rebuild a union which has been dragged into the gutter.

Therefore the only union who can look at the current season without looking on it as a loss is really the Lions.

To fans it does not, to the team it does.

Need I remind you how many finals and semi’s the Sharks played in the last 5 years? I don’t think I need to as most of you will remember that.

But those seasons with no silverware, but the experiences of having successful seasons and building and executing one, contributes more than you think to where you find yourself right now as CC champs.

Last year WP failed in the CC semi’s, ended 10th on the Super rugby log, this year they ended second on both logs and played in both finals, with both their age-group teams winning their respective titles.

I am not pleased with the loss in the final, as stated quite clearly yesterday, but that has more to do with how the team played on the day, than their achievements in the last 24 months – and the coaches have a massive part to play in that.

  • @wpw (Comment 40) : I’m saying look at the resources available to him. What is the difference between last year and this year? The players available to him. During the off-season the scouts went out and signed two major Springboks who had a big hand in helping the team get to the Super 14 final. Fine, the CC team operated mostly without those boks.

But then compare his accomplishments to those of Dawie Theron, who is the Griquas coach, whose team doesn’t have great depth and is pillaged in the off-season. Yet every year, Griquas knock over a few of the big guys, like the 2010 CC champs this year.

Who do you think is the better coach? The guy with a list of stars behind him or the guy who has no big names behind him and no depth in his squad?

I think AC has done brilliantly with the Stormers / WP and have more than a few times posted the words “take a bow Allister Coetzee” but…considering the horrible start the Sharks had to where they ended the season attests to Plumtree’s achievements. Also in the process he managed to beat both Super 14 finalists in “winner take all matches”. Its not a biggy for me but I can understand that some will feel done in.

Im more bummed about Lambie not being recognized.

Plum had an epic fail in the Super 14 but won the CC.

Frans won the Super 14, struggled through the CC were at points it looked as though the Bulls would not make it. But by the end of the season, they won through and into the semis. Pity they ran into the Sharks. He had a better season that AC.

With Mvovo, Pietersen and Ndungane in the Sharks squad Mapoe would not have gotten much playing time. Remember this is not officially confirmed yet and we will do an article when we get something more concrete.

  • Comment 58, posted at 02.11.10 12:53:08 by war1 Reply
  • @war1 (Comment 58) : I always rated Mapoe as more of an outside centre than wing so it might have been difficult for him to get game time with Oom Stef as well.

I don’t see how the Cheetahs would release him to the Lions though if they refused to release to us.

Also shows terrible ethics from Mapoe if it is true.

Not too sure about Coetzee, Jantjies and Basson. Cape Franchise was a huge improvement so maybe the recognition was for exactly that – the Sharks did not hit such lows for Plumtree to have to rescue them.

I guess it was also easier for Lambie to display his talents in a winning team.
