Springbok doctor Craig Roberts reported only “bumps and bruises” as the team departed for Cardiff from Dublin on Sunday morning. He said there were no major concerns although another 24 hours would provide more certainty.

“The only concern before the match was Jean de Villiers and we managed him and replaced him after 60 minutes as we planned,” said Dr Roberts. “He came through the game well and apart from the usual bumps and bruises there are no major concerns.”

The squad reached its full complement of 30 on Sunday when Frans Steyn joined the squad from France. Steyn played for Racing Metro in the latest round of Top 14 matches before becoming available to join the Springbok squad.

“The players worked hard all last week and they took that onto the field,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers on Sunday.

“We focused on certain areas and it was pleasing to see the results. It was a new-look team but they responded well to the occasion and the tricky conditions and delivered a great performance.

“But that’s behind us now and it will mean nothing when we meet Wales on Saturday. We’ve already switched our focus to them and the different type of challenge they present.”

The Springboks ended a run of three defeats in Dublin and a ten-year wait for a win in the Irish capital with a 23-21 win on Saturday.

The Boks take on Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday (November 13) before Tests against Scotland (November 20), England (November 27) and a match against the Barbarians on December 4

  • Wonder if Frans will come in at 12/15 or on the bench?

My preference would be at 12, with JDV shifting to 13.

I like that idea.. I feel for Basson, he hardly touched the ball, but aplon is more explosive.. imo

  • @Sportbilly (Comment 6) :

    Alberts in place of who?

I would love to see Alberts play, but he seems destined to take Keegans spot on the bench.

I dont think Spies deserves to be dropped after the game he played against Ireland.. He really got involved. Someone must have spoken to him about his laziness recently.

  • Alberts at 8 and Fransie at 15 would be perfect for the NH conditions.

  • Guys,
    Why is everyone rating aplon?
The way I saw it he cost us 2 tries with his defense.
Sounds abit harsh, but the skill required it to make a judgement call about whether you are going to get the ball, or alternativly mark you man so if he get the ball, u are in a position to tackle.
On both instances aplon got that jufgement call wrong!
In his defense, the last try also had habanna trying to go for the intercept.

Those were two bad bounces.. and could have resulted in tries by Aplon on the other side of the field..

    He was still solid..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 13) :
Yeah sure, but in rugby the ball is renowned for its bad bouncing, you have to anticipate that and play percentage rugby which would have been to mark your man or get your judgement call right.
Also, it should be noted that I’m note the biggest fan of an intercept try, esp when half the backline is trying to do it when they should be protecting there own try line.
As luck would have it, the ball didn’t bounce right for aplon, instead of 2 tries for we have 2 against, he wanted to play high risk and in an economical sense should carry some liability.

  • Comment 15, posted at 07.11.10 14:28:55 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @kevmaestro (Comment 15) : Bit harsh there on Aplon. How to you anticipate the bounce of the rugby ball? Unless you are psychic of course.

  • Comment 16, posted at 07.11.10 14:42:43 by McLovin Reply

  • @McLovin (Comment 16) : The pass that lead to the second Irish try was a shocker and desperate. Worked in favour of Ireland on the day, but like it’s been said now too many times, on another day different bounce…. 🙄

  • Comment 17, posted at 07.11.10 14:45:00 by McLovin Reply

  • @McLovin (Comment 16) :
That’s exactly what I’m saying, you can’t anticipate the bounce of the ball.
Instead of going for the ball, aplon should have had his man covered to prevent him from scoring.
Ofcourse had aplon got the ball, he inturn may have been away.
But as there is no way to predict the bounce of the ball, it is high risk to go for it! The risks were even higher considering the attacker was only 5meters out from the try line.

Aplon decided to play the high risk game, consequently he lost and tries were scored.
I for one don’t believe test matches are won by taking such unnecessary risks

  • Comment 18, posted at 07.11.10 14:53:52 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @McLovin (Comment 17) :
I also first thought the pass was bad, but it came off habanna hands.

  • Comment 19, posted at 07.11.10 14:55:02 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @kevmaestro (Comment 19) : I’d rather say habana was at fault for the second try!

  • @Ben (Comment 20) :Yeah, habanna should also be carrying some liability here (why does our whole backline always go for intercept tries)
But the reason I place part liability on habanna and not all of it is that had aplon had his man covered and not also try go for an intercept a try would have been saved

  • Comment 21, posted at 07.11.10 15:09:09 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @kevmaestro (Comment 21) : I agree with you fully but habana is known for always going for the intercept!

  • @Ben (Comment 22) :
In the backline habanna goes for intercepts, jdv goes for intercepts, aplon goes for interpects!
    Its too much!

  • Comment 23, posted at 07.11.10 15:27:30 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @kevmaestro (Comment 18) : Fair enough. Perhaps he should have gone for the man instead. 🙂

Well, for starters his fellow players voted him as Players Player of the Year!!

  • @wpw (Comment 30) :
Ya sure, that’s like winning miss congeniality.
Sure, the guy plays with heart and due to his size he punches well above his weight but that doesn’t make him great and I certainly don’t think it warrents the ratings this guy gets.
We need to judge him from an overall perspective and not on some handicap due to his size and passion!
Please note that I’m not suggestin his passion isn’t good enough, I just don’t think he is good enough

  • Comment 31, posted at 07.11.10 16:35:43 by kevmaestro Reply

  • I rate Aplon. He’s that good. 😈

And because of his size he has to go out and prove his ‘worth’ every match. Plus he’s a game breaker. Give me 15 Aplons any day.

  • Comment 33, posted at 07.11.10 17:01:53 by kevmaestro Reply

  • @McLovin (Comment 32) :
I think he is quite good, but I prefer big, quick wings like JPP or Mvovo (whom I wouldn’t start with until he has a cap or 2), while Fransie at 15 is a much better NH option.

That said, I don’t blame him for the second try, but he should have done more to stop Bowe’s try.

  • @kevmaestro (Comment 33) : How many tries have been scored as a direct result of Aplon missing a tackle?

Or should I rather say, how does his defence stats compare to other wings?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 34) : You’re right. In rugby a good big one will always be better than a good small one. 🙂

  • @McLovin (Comment 35) :
I don’t know. I justt felt in the last game his defense was questionable.
That aside, I’m not sayin he is a bad player, people rate him, and I can’t see why.
Let me put it like this, I won’t play him ahead of brian or jp. He has the edge on mvovo coz mvovo lack experiance and I don’t know how mvovos kicking game is.
I won’t play him at full back. He lack the size required for scramble defense. Its just a matter of physics required to tackle a player out into touch.
As things stand, due to injury I would play him but he is not great and not deserving of the ratings he gets

  • Comment 41, posted at 07.11.10 18:41:16 by kevmaestro Reply
