Andries gets the call

The most improved centre of the 2010 Currie Cup Tournament, Andries Strauss, has been called up the replace an injured Zane Kirchner. Strauss is set to join the Boks on Wednesday and will in all likelihood play on Saturday against the Barbarians.

Kirchner suffered a concussion and a mild elbow sprain in the 21-11 victory over England at the same venue this weekend and was withdrawn after 47 minutes of the match.

“We have alternatives for fullback in the squad in Gio Aplon and Patrick Lambie but are short on centres,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers. “Andries had a great Absa Currie Cup season for the Sharks and has played his way to this opportunity.”

The Springboks are without both of Saturday’s centres. Jean de Villiers suffered a mild groin strain in the match while Frans Steyn has returned to club duty in France. Juan de Jongh and Jaque Fourie – who had also played centre for the Springboks this season – were both unable to tour because of injury.

Of the Sharks 2010 Currie Cup Winning team, only Stefan Terblanche and Steven Sykes have not represented the Boks on this tour. All the best Andries, go make us proud!

The revised Springbok squad is:

Backs: Gio Aplon, Francois Hougaard, Adi Jacobs, Elton Jantjies, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Andries Strauss.

Forwards: Willem Alberts, Bakkies Botha, Keegan Daniel, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski, Bandise Maku, Tendai Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen, Juan Smith (captain), Adriaan Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe.

    9. Hougaard

    12. Strauss
    13. Jacobs
    14. Ndungane

One must give PDV props: he does reward hard work and good form, and I think he has a thing for the underdog.

Willem Alberts, Lwazi Mvovo, Pat Lambie, Charl McLeod and now Andries “The Hammer” Strauss all playing themselves into the Bok team from nowhere.

However, if there is anyone that deserves a call up simply on heart and desire (based on performances in the CC) it is Strauss. Perhaps this is why everyone here is so happy about his inclusion.

What does la Grange have to do to even smell a bok jersey? Admittedly he lacks the yard of pace that would make him worldclass but he offers so much and even acts as a extra fetcher. One of the only lions players I have rated over the last few years, the others all being sharks now 😉

  • With about half the squad made up of Sharks , it would make sense to adopt the Sharks game plan and stay away from the kick / chase crap ! Would have Charl , Pat , Volvo , Dries , AD , Hougard and Aplon . Bearing in mind the Barbarians backline looks more potent than their forwards (aka WP ) we just need to starve them of ball and then give it to our backs to run at them all afternoon ! That would leave Odwa and Jantjies on the bench as cover for 10/11/14/15 and you would have other options by moving Lambie / Hougard around should you need to . If we do the kick / chase thing , we are in for a long afternoon of tackling and defending our line .

  • Firstly for the people moaning about Strauss’s lack of attacking flair- were the Sharks not the most attacking team in the CC with Strauss at 12? You cant just fling the ball out to the wing everytime and hope to score also have to suck in their best defenders in the backline first and Strauss does take the ball up well. It is a bit harsh on guys like Bosman and Doppies but if you playing in a winning team you will get rewarded- lets see what Bosman does next year in black & white. I hope the Boks and Sharks keep Lambie at 10 for the next few years!

Agree with you…don’t know what all the Strauss detractors are moaning about. Yesterday people were moaning that the likely Bok backline is looking defensively frail and then they bring in the best defensive centre of the Currie Cup to probably sit on the bench as back-up in case Nonu and co do make a mess of our defence and they still moan. You have to see Strauss’s selection in the context of the team dynamics for Saturday. Personally the thought of Strauss coming on in the second half with the thought that it maybe his only opportunity in Green and Gold and tackling our biggest oppositon RWC players in the same way he tackled WP players out of the Bok tour rather tickles me. But then Strauss hasn’t probably endeared himself to the WP supporters for the very same reason.

The longer they’re together the better they click, that goes for both attacking and defensive play.

Kanko, Charl, Lambie, Strauss and even Adi has all played together and that’s what makes them a better option.

Even if you throw Hougie in there Lambie will still feel more confident with Dries on his outside.

Houg, Jantjies, Lambie together would be asking for trouble. Just my opinion.

  • @robdylan (Comment 80) : Rob, I would feel the same. Not sure what it would say to Lambie if they pick Jantjies to start at FH, especially that Lambie was back up to Morne at FH this whole tour. Not fair on Lambie if they do that. He deserves a start at FH. Jantjies too deserves to play, but would bring him on later in the game and maybe move Lambie then to FB.

Also think I would go with Mcleod at scrummie and Strauss at inside centre. They played plenty in the CC together. They would slot in together well. Hougaard on at 14.

But don’t see that happen either, but it would be a logical choice really to have those 3 start.

  • Maybe once Gio comes on for Lambie they might shift Lambie to FH. What a bloody shame messing this youngster about. Idiots.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 85) : I can’t believe it too. Terrible actually from the selectors. What the heck does that say to Lambie? They don’t have faith in him to start? Really shameful from the selectors.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 85) : Well sort of expected Lambie to be @ 12 and Strauss to bench, but the idea of Strauss at 12 is to try and neutralise all those strike runners in Baa Baa backline, on the Keegan Daniel issue, would put Willem Alberts on the bench ?

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 74) : What I tell you that Strauss would start? Check the team Strauss slots straight into inside center for Saturday. 😛

  • @Puma (Comment 87) : Agree. Totally makes no sense. I know it’s a Baabaas game, but suddenly pushing Lambie to fullback is stupid.

I like Jantjes a lot as a 10, but this habit of simply hurdling a player from nowhere into a position is a typically fucking retarded SA move. 👿

  • @CS (Comment 77) : If that was the case Keegan Daniel would have been the first name on the team sheet. 😉
