The South African Sevens team opened their account at the HSBC Sevens in Dubai with an unconvincing 19-10 victory over Russia.

Paul Treu’s men scored three tries, to the two of their opponents. We’ll update this thread throughout the day as more details and results become available.

Next up for the Blitzbokke are Scotland, followed by the big one against Australia.

Bok sevens squad:

Lubabalo Mtembu, Boom Prinsloo, Frankie Horne, Pieter Engelbrecht, Sibusiso Sithole, Kyle Brown, Renfred Dazel, Bernardo Botha, Mark Richards, Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, MJ Mentz.

  • Once again our defence looked suspect against big ball-carriers..sometimes the russian runner was going forward an extra 5,10m with 2 blitzbokke hanging on..hope this can be sorted out before we meet the pacific islanders..otherwise ..

  • Don’t wanna criticize Paul Treu too much here, no doubt a nice guy and seems pretty committed, but sheesh man this team is pathetic.
What do they do all day when they are supposed to be training? It looks like they have never actually been taught how to tackle properly. These are specialist pro 7’s players, yet they look like an amateur makeshift team that has just got together for the first time. Paul Treu talks about long term planning for the 2016 and 2020 games, if he doesn’t start delivering results soon he won’t be in charge for too much longer.

  • @jonnow (Comment 26) :
Maybe I am being unfair, but I must agree.

Certainly Treu has challenges securing the services of players from the unions, but I also think that he does not appreciate forward players and play enough.

We have tons of quick, nimble and small guys who are great on attack, but we lack a few bruisers or small guys with good tackle techniques (like Lambie or Aplon).

In addition, the ruck techniques seems to be dont ruck, but wait to defend. That can’t work unless you have at least 2 guys strong or wiley enough to still disrupt opponent ball.

So, while I understand he wants to build and has included about 5 20-year olds, I think maybe he just isnt coaching total rugby or selecting balanced squads.

  • @chaz (Comment 29) : Sorry Chaz, but I can’t agree that these guys did us proud.

They couldn’t even make the semi’s, couldn’t even beat Scotland. They should be better than this.

  • Comment 30, posted at 05.12.10 19:02:28 by jonnow Reply

  • They should have beaten fiji and did beat the aussies..they didn’t beat the scots but neither did they lose..
Their performance was a bit up-and-down.let’s see how they do @george in a week’s time.
Was ojiambo even considered for 7s training camp?think the squad could do with the skills and physical attributes he can bring to the team.

  • England’s oliver lindsay-hague looked awesome!speed and stepping skills!
Eng have a blend of youth, experience(think ben gollings),power, and stepping skills.
But england lost to portugal!!so lets see what lessons our young 7s team have learned.
