The University of Stellenbosch, better known as Maties, will be the team to beat in the 2011 Varsity Cup, having won the previous three installments of the competition.
Maties won all seven their fixtures before the semi finals last year, and looked an unbeatable team until they came up against College Rovers in the National Club Champs. Only two players remain from the 2010 squad, in lock Hugo Kloppers and No 8 Tertius Daniller.
Head coach Chean Roux remains upbeat though that his team will do well even though he still has no idea who will make up his final squad. A number of his players are contracted to Western Province, the Pumas, Griquas and the EP Kings.
Player to watch: Callie Visagie sacrificed a Western Province contract to study full time at the University, and brings with him a load of experience having played for WP Under 19 and Under 21 teams.
Game to look forward to: The Maties v UCT game is always a cracker, but the coach seems to think that the game against the must improved Tuks is one to watch for. Tuks will be coached by Heyneke Meyer this year, and should be a force.

@robdylan (Comment 12) : yep
my bad – just realised I banned this sluiplips chap over a year ago for posting spam here. So THAT’s why the comment was initially moderated. Well, that’ll teach me.
@robdylan (Comment 12) :
What fracas on twitter.
@Salmonoid (Comment 15) : some guys from Sports Illustrated thought the article was a little too similar to their own.
