Mallett’s Italian reign comes to an end

Jacques Brunel will replace Nick Mallet as coach of the Italian team after the World Cup in New Zealand at the end of the year, when Mallet’s contract ends.

Brunel was Bernard Laporte’s assistant coach for seven years with the French team that twice made the semi finals of the World Cup. He has since been at Perpignan where he guided the team to champions in 2009 and losing finalists in 2010.

Nick Mallet’s future is yet to be decided as the former South African and Stade Francais coach will surely be a wanted man.

  • We got quite a choice for Bok coach next year.

    Alister Coetzee
    Brendan Venter
    Heyneke Meyer
    Nick Mallet
John Plum ( I don’t want him to go, but he might apply)
    John Mitchell
That Stormers defense coach (can’t remember his name)

  • Kitch won 14 tests and a wc , zero losses.
Mallet’s reign as bok coach started after the boks had comprehensively beaten the aus @loftus under carel dup..
Nick mallet also coached the boks to a 29-O drubbing by the abs in 1999..
And we all know of the effect it had on the bok team when he dropped g teichman.

  • Useless info but after Kitch Christie, John Mitchell is the 2nd most successful national coach of the pro era with an 84% winning record, also making him also the best national coach to ever get fired/let go by quite a considerable %.

  • My choice would be Meyer as head coach , Plum as forward coach and Coetzee as backline coach. Then in true rugby tradition as the trend these days, Braam will be kicking coach (he is helping the Sharks specifically Lambie and JLP atm). Os as scrum coach, Vic Matfield as lineout coach. John Smit as team manager. And PDV as ball carrier. Oy ya Dick as Waterboy.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 23) : I think the same guys that supplanted their mate Henry in Mitchell’s position were still around when the 2007/8 decision to retain Henry was made. Henry is one of the best of all times in my opinion.
Will be interesting to see who replaces him as AB coach. I’m sure h’ll step down this year RWC winner or not.
