Lions sign Butch James

Hats off to the Lions, ladies and gents! They have finally managed to reel in one of the big fish they’ve been chasing, with Bath flyhalf Butch James unveiled to the media at a press conference at Lanseria Airport. Although James has put pen to paper with the Lions, his appearance in the country at this stage of the year has more to do with his upcoming wedding than his availability to play for his new team.

And that’s kind of the point. While I understand the necessity for the razzmatazz – Lions fans have had to endure a few lean years, after all and any bit of good news deserves all the fanfare they can muster – I’m not really sure how much of an impact James is going to have for them in Super Rugby 2011, or, in fact, this year. The burly James is still tied up at Bath until the end of the European season, where after he’ll join up with the Lions for whatever’s left of the Super Rugby tournament. He is hoping to go to the World Cup – and our sources suggest that his name is already in the squad for that – meaning that the Lions will get zero involvement from him at any stage during the Currie Cup.

Write off 2011 to marketing, then, but what about 2012? Is Butch going to be the Lions’ first-choice pivot next year? Will Elton Jantjies not have developed sufficiently by then, under the mentorship of (at latest count) three seasoned international flyhalves? Will Butch’s knees and shoulder even last that long? For the players’ sake, we hope so, but I can’t help feeling that the Lions might just have bought something they don’t really need, in the interests of staying in the news. A few more props, locks and hookers to go with all their ageing pivots might not be a terrible idea…

I doubt he is good enough to play at test level now that Lambie and to a lesser extent Jantjies have been called up for the Boks!!

  • Good signing in the sense that Butch is a good and experienced player.

Though one wonders whether it is really necessary and whether it is looking into future. I mean Jantjes must be first choice. If he was not considered to be ready for S 15 than signing Butch who is not available is not the best move. If Jantjies and Burton need a mentor they already have Spencer.

    Weird.

I remember watching some interview with Butch years ago. I think in 2008 where he implied that he did not see himself playing for other SA tean than the Sharks. Must have been tough decision.

  • Congratulations for the Lions. I just can’t help feeling sad that Butch has signed for the Lions but it’s the professional age and players can go where they want.

@robdylan (Comment 1) : I’d forgotten the Lions had Burton at all with their talk of AP and Elton Jantjes. The poor guy, he moved to the Lions for more game time and he’s dropped even further down the pecking order of FHs. If he’d stayed at the Bulls, he’d probably be rotating with M Steyn the whole season and definitely get game time.

  • @rekinek (Comment 13) : And don’t forget the walking injury – Andre Pretorius.

The question I have is what has happened to Francis? I remember he picked up an injury in the S14 last year, but surely he would’ve recovered by now? But I can’t remember having seen his name mentioned around the Lions. Not that I’ve been paying much attention.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 16) : You right I did forget. But then again you never know with AP. Though he was surprisingly injury free at the Sharks probably because he was used sparingly. ๐Ÿ˜†

Perhaps they plan moving Butch to 12, but then again Doppies seems to be established.

For what its worth I think the lions will be a force to rekon with .Jaco taute ,Murray ,Mapoe ,Killian and now James sounds like a mean prospect ,big strong tough and explosive .They have also developed some depth at 10 & 9 . Lets not kid ourselves if these guys can gel i think we can expect some shocks this year from them .They got the coach and the players .That being said ,the sharks are looking as serious unit aswell this year . Go SA rugby .Peace away to varsity (yes i am a lighty ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Me personally Burton had promise but has let himself down ..with some good conditioning and upper body strength I fancy him at 12.

They play their last Aviva Premiership pool match on 7 May. They are currently 8th on the log with 2 games in hand so MIGHT still make the play-offs which are 14/15 May and 28 May.

Best case scenario he will be in SA on 8 May. The Lions play the 1st of 4 overseas games the following weekend before coming home to face the Sharks in Jhb on 11 June which will be the Lions’ last pool game as they have a bye in the last round on 17/18 June.

He can add value, I believe, but is not going to get a lot of game time for the Lions, if he joins early May, as is speculated, he will get maybe 6 round robin games, (plus the semi and final, of course ๐Ÿ˜† ). If he has a genuine shot of making the world cup squad, he would then be off to play tri-nations, and won’t be available for the currie cup. I personally would rather have someone who could be there for most of the super games, not less than half of them

I reckon he could be awesome at 12 outside Jantjies for them too.

Still, not quite the coup they have been spouting about. But its good for SA rugby that a good player has come home to teach our youngsters. Hopefully we see more of this.

@Salmon, I wish I did play rugby but when I first came to campus, I had a shoulder injury that I had stop all physical activity. The team is based in PMB with not many players from my campus being University of Durban Westville.

  • Butch James during his interview after the announcment this morning: The first time I thought this wasn’t a bad team was when I watched them in the Currie Cup last season and I think it was then that I made up my mind – all the new signings are just a bonus.

    And until that 1st time?

Don’t worry mate A LOT of us STILL think they are a kak team.

Hey you are almost cynical enough to become a fulltime journalist. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have not been on Keo in almost a year, but maybe he does the same thing one or two of the other journos do. They have a look at comments on blogs that post articles early and then write their articles as opinion pieces with the vies in the comments on the blogs coming through pretty stronly. ๐Ÿ˜•
