Sharks thumped by Lions

The Lions were victorious over the Sharks in their second hit out of the season in Cape Town tonight.

In a game that battled to get the scoreboard rolling the Sharks managed to open the scoring after 33 minutes. The score came from good lineout possesion that was spread wide to the right and then back to the left seeing Pat Lambie carry on where he left off in the Currie Cup Final.

A mini blitz by the Lions saw them score 24 unanswered points during the next 20 minutes. A converted Derick Minnie try and a penalty by Andre Pretorius saw the Lions go into half-time with a 10 – 5 lead. Warren Whiteley & Jaco Taute then each went over for converted tries to complete the 24 point blitz early in the second half.

Lwazi Mvovo then brought a glimmer of hope for a fightback by the Sharks to take the score to 24 – 10. That is where it ended though with the Lions opening the floodgates and Franco van der Merwe, Caylib Oosthuizen & Michael Killian all crossing the line for a rather sad final score of 41 – 10.

We all believe that very little can be read into matches such as this. That is until your team wins. Let’s face it, the losers will be saying “This was only a warm-up” while the winners will be bouyed by a very important confidence boosting victory.

Congratulations to the Lions who will leave Cape Town in much better spirits than they did last year. To the Sharks we can only say, you looked a little rusty but that was to be expected and the only way is up.

Tries: Derick Minnie, Warren Whiteley, Jaco Taute, Franco van der Merwe, Caylib Oosthuizen, Michael Killian
Conversions: Burton Francis (4)
Penalties: Andre Pretorius

Tries: Patrick Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo

  • So we lost. Tough pill to swallow, but we know it is early days and the Lions and Stormers didn’t look much better earlier this week.

Let’s see how nuch improvement we have during the next game.

  • I wonder how much of the “this is only the lions” mindset the guys had?

IF that was the case then this loss is a GOOD thing making us realise that we can’t take any team for granted this season.

  • When the LIONS lost against the Stormers last week I did not think “only a warm-up”..I was thinking hopefully the LIONS won…although a 15 – 0 loss again a team with 10 Bokke is not too bad…

Now I am in much better spirits now that the won and comfortably so against a team with 12/13 Bokke in their starting line-up…

  • Well played Lions even though it was only a trial match. This young Lions team is in a much better shape, physically and mentally. And with the best coach in the world who just spent 4 months preparing this team (compared to the few weeks that Dick spent in preparation a year ago) one just see the damage they are going to inflict on many a side.

    Go Lions

Superbru is going to be so difficult this year, anybody have any thoughts on the Rebels, I am wondering just how good they will be against real opposition. But this conference thing is going to change the dynamics of the competition thats for sure.

  • People sitting at the game it was obvious this game did not mean to much to the Sharks, its like up untill Hargreaves got injured they fired then took their foot off the excellerator

Hargreave was in bad shape when they helped him off the field
    not to sure about Ludick

The passing ws wild and all over the place

Scrums we slaughtered them in the first 15 min and then on in we got penalised in just about every scrum there after

We got penalised for something, and something was said by Sharks players to Jonker, this after about 30 min and Jonker advanced 10 meters, thereafter he nailed the shit outa us.

Lineouts was shabby and we lost quite a few

To be honest this is the first game we have played in the start of the new season and one could see the mindset was not right nor had the rust been cleaned off.

Even this comming weekend i wont worry to much although i have no doubt Plumtree will read the team the riot act, and you will see a very different side against WP

This is pre season friendly , Sharks had played their first match , Lions their 2nd and it showed

lets not get ahead of ourselves because trust me soon you will see the REAL local teams

Yes i agree the new system is poiling what the past meant , i think the Lions have made great strides from the past year or 2 but its a little early to start dissing the other SA teams as not REAL or good enough to test the Lions

It could just blow up that bubble

  • I’m not worried about the fact that we lost, or that the players were rusty. What is a grave concern for me is the amount of tries leaked, our inability to score tries ourselves, and our lacksadaisical approach to discipline. Hopefully the next game will give me a little more peace of mind…

I think congratulations to the Lions (and their long-suffering fans) are in order too. Although it may have been a fairly meaningless pre-season friendly, I am glad that they are not kicking off the year in their usual “whipping boy for all, sundry and their grandmas” fashion. I really do think they have finally turned a fairly major corner.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 17) : The difference is that with the Bulls and the Crusaders the teams that lost had none of their big name players in them.

Our problem is that this team is probably our strongest side available and we got our butts handed to us. It was only a warm up game, but I’m pretty concerned.

  • Although preseason friendly results generally arent a good indicator of what is to come there must surely be a few concerns for the sharks management. Firstly these guys are pros and therefore I dont like this whole they just rusty term because if i told my boss sorry i stuffed up im just rusty i may have to find employment elsewhere. Secondly if there are “rusty” thats only an excuse for the backline and other set moves to not gel 100%…not defending and leaking tries has nothing to do with rustiness but everything to do with attitude. If like some people say they were not up for the game, then why play at all? Send in the youngsters and fringe players who really want to stake a claim to a starting jersey!

last night they were the better team and wanted a win , that was clear

The reason i say i was not too concerned about last night is in Plumtree’s tactics, he made subs continuosly and so fast one could not even keep track

we didnt take shots at goal , there were many signs that the sharks in no way had intensity or the drive to want to win that game , I am not making excuses for them, but it seriously was very clear

The bad news is the Lions are more fearsome opposition than in 2010.
Hopefully we’ll up our preparations and peak at the right time in 2011.
Can’t say I’m going to set high quality expectations for the February rugby matches in Durban tho. Usually humidity = greasy ball = poor handling = forgettable rugby.

Yes, they lost against the Kings but one will never see that team play in the S15.

Ultimately what I’m trying to say is that a sportsman is competitive and never wants to lose so going all out in a warm up is going to be difficult not to do if it’s against opposition you’re going to play in a few weeks. If you play a team you’d never face (even in the CC) then it’s not that important to gain the psychological edge.

  • I’m disappointed, Plum clearly got the strategy wrong again. Why just focus on conditioning up until this time, surely there must be a balance between conditioning, game plane execution, ball skills, defensive patterns etc..Do we really have sufficient time to work on all these areas that have clearly not been given sufficient attention??
Stormers at this time of the year are again looking good again, they clearly got their balance in terms of match preparation correct again. A good start in this competition is important, it gives you momentum to continue pushing. I don’t understand why we just focused on conditioning, we have a big squad which means that there will be conditioning during the season for certain players whilst they are being rested. “Results don’t matter at this stage “ ! 41 – 10…you must be joking.. Very disillusioned…
One more thing…can all the guys that think that Lambie should focus on fullback get over it already. Yes he can play fullback very well but he is no Mils, Israel Dagg, Kurtly, James O’Connor (mind spelling), in other words..he won’t bring fear to the opposition. Lambie’s skills set are suited for flyhalf.

  • Afternoon everyone

OH well what can we say Black and White is all that matters 🙂

well like i said it did come back to bight us in a big way , and so the Lions are in heavan so what its the begining of the year and its only warm up games lets look and get worried when the real fun begins and my guess is Sharks will be up in front.

Where were the lions when they lost their 1st game, its their 2nd and our first so what give it time Sharks old trick in the book is that that they do there bit of drowning in the begining and swim later, and that is when they are very dangerously so beware Jaws is still around and waiting for the pick

    GO SHARKS GO
