Hargreaves given the all clear

Here’s some good news, courtesy of our friend Stefan Terblanche.

The Sharks vice-captain, in response to our question yesterday, let us know via Twitter that Alistair Hargreaves doesn’t appear to have sustained any serious damage to his back. In Stef’s own words, “Al very sore but scans and x -rays all clear. Good news!”.

We’re still expecting the big man to be out of action for a while, but any thoughts of him missing the entire Super Rugby tournament or even the year should hopefully now be shelved. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

If you want to follow Stefan on Twitter, the link is here.

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : Yeah, just read it. Would be great if he was 100% over the injury and can start.

  • I have to be honest, a lower back injury, even just muscular is a slow healer. Muscles in the lower back have lower blood flow than other muscles, and take longer to recover from injury as a result. Even without spinal problems (disk, nerve damage, etc) this will still take some time, and I am afraid he will have some after effects even after he has “recovered”.

  • @robdylan (Comment 21) : Agreed, but I am not going to get excited for a quick recovery. I have a feeling he misses the Super Rugby tour this season, and returns after the Sharks return. Just my opinion.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 22) : well – I don’t think that will be a train smash, so long as we have Skeate back by then and we manage to keep Mostert in one piece. Bresler is ready to make his mark at this level.

  • I think Skeate will be fine filling Ali’s shoes once he recovers from his injury. He is a very good 5 lock. My problem comes when Plum insists on playing him as a 4 lock. Surely both Mostert and Bressler are better 4 locks than Skeate.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 24) : agree… he’s hardly the archetypal enforcer

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) : Not only that, I don’t think he provides much support on the tighthead side in the scrum. Go look at last season’s games, I think you will see that the Sharks scrum was most dominant when Sykes was scrumming down at 4. Sykes does not get a lot of credit for what he does on the pitch, but we honestly don’t have another 4 lock that is even close to him.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 26) : agree with you.

BTW, I must say thanks for bringing this up… I’ve been looking for an excuse to use the phrase “archetypal enforcer” all day.

Speaking of which, I’m lead to believe young Vleis Engelbrecht earned himself a gold star by smashing Mapoe on Tuesday night. Great way to impress the Sharks suits that!

  • @robdylan (Comment 27) : HI Rob if ur around , it seems Keo has the Sharks team up , only reserves still to be announced?

As for Hargs and having seen how he fell and looked after?? he is one lucky fella not to be injured seriously

we can be happy he will be ready

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 29) : Keo’s troll was at the field where the Sharks trained… I think he’s guessing.

Still, Oddy at fullback is an exciting move if they’re right.

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) : i think we will see a very different sharks team play this coming weekend

for a few reasons and not always about other players playing , but playing with more urgency

must say i am a little surprised at bosman starting, his defence was shocking
