A question of depth

With the Super Rugby competition being so long this year, I thought it fitting that we have a look at the depth in the Sharks team.

Peter de Villiers has already said he wants control over the Springboks in Super Rugby, so the question is just how much rugby will the Boks actually play in the super competition?

Let’s start with the back three, where I think we are blessed with talent, but not so much experienced back-up (with Odwa being the exception). He showed this weekend he’s more than capable of playing fullback and we all know he can cover the wing. We also have a little experience in Vulindlu who can slot in at wing with ease.

In the centres I think we have a lot off options, with six players who can easily play as centres so this department shouldn’t be a real problem. There’s a big contrast to last year when we didn’t have centres for back-up.

Looking at flyhalf and scrumhalf, I’m a little worried about scrumhalf with Hoffman not exactly setting the stage alight. Should we have let Rory go? But I’m sure Hoffman will raise his game when it really counts. We have enough options at flyhalf with Lambie and Potgieter.

Loose forwards shouldn’t be a big problem and with Jacques Engelbrecht hopefully joining up with the team we should be very well covered in that area. We easily have five quality loose forwards, with Alberts being the most versatile of the lot.

After the game on Saturday, I’m happy with our depth in the second row with Bresler and Mostert both having a very good game – let’s not forget we still have three other quality locks.

In the front row we might have some problems if two props were to get injured, but John Smit will more than likely play prop for most of the competition, in my opinion. We have van Staden who did pretty well on the weekend and at hooker we have Burden who I feel would be in the starting team if he played for any other province in SA.

Overall I’m happy with our depth but it has to be said that they will need some game time to get back their form, so some of them might play a lot of Vodacom Cup rugby and then be drafted into the Sharks team. They will have to lift their games as back-up players to prevent what happend in the last 15 minutes on Saturday from happening again.

  • Depth is good, also worried about scrumhalf…Just hope we don’t forgot about Ojiambo and what he can offer us. Ojimabo is the future and I would like us to give him an opportunity to establish himself in the match 22, in fact we don’t have to give him an opportunity to establish himself in the squad, come mid Super Rugby, he will have forced his way into the squad.
You can’t ignore a player that weighs 110kgs, is 1.96 meters tall, runs the 100 meters in less than 11 seconds, is aggressive, has a handoff and a step. He’s a rough diamond that needs to be polished hard soon. With proper coaching he can cause serious damage as an impact player. Just hope Gumede doesn’t get his dirty hands on him.

  • @Ben : have to agree with you…. Odwa really played well @ 15. So there should not be any problem with Ludik, Odwa, Pat and Stef who can fill the gap if needed.

  • Hoffman and Adi will be fine. Just give them game time. Ideally they should have had a lot more out of these 2 games than they got.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 1) : I don’t think we need to rush the kid. If he’s got the goods that we all think he does, he will shine in the Vodacom Cup and force his way into the reckoning for the Currie Cup.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : not to worried about it. Could just become a big concern if charl was to get a long term injury.

  • Although I have to say carlos spencer and stephen larkham weren’t the best place kickers out there but they were still world class flyhalves in my opinion!

  • maby we should make a place for JLP somewhere els, maby outside centre to give Lams an oppertunity to show his greatness without the presure of kicking, and when he is cofident and kicks better at practice he can be the full package…

  • @franshark (Comment 12) : we already have 3 players competing for the no 13 jersey so if you want to play him centre rather play him at 12

  • @Charlie (Comment 14) : I think Plum got sucked into trying to win the game. The guys had shown enough by half time and I would’ve brought on a completely new backline for the second half.

I remember the corresponding game last year when changes were made in the first half already and one could not keep up with who was on the field and in what position. This game was played with a totally different approach.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 16) : true… guess he wanted to give his first team a hit-out in the most realistic game setting he could.

  • I am thrilled that Odwa was so solid at 15. With Ludik, Odders, and Stef covering 15, there is no reason to move Lambie back there, he can concentrate on 10 and 12.

Also, we should not forget that JPP was originally touted as a fullback when he first started playing for the Sharks, once Monty cemented the 15 slot for the Sharks and Boks, JPP played wing and the rest is history. Still think he would be a superb fullback if needed.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 21) : It is nice when you can go position by position and find two players for each position that will not let the team down. Great stuff that.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 24) : I suppose, unfortunately I don’t see Burden getting much game time if both Smit and Bissy avoid injury. Of course it is great to have him available if one of the two do get hurt.

  • If Plumtree does a bit of rotation I think Burden will be in there from the bench quite regularly.

  • My opinion is that the only time Burden sees the bench in Super Rugby is when Smit starts at 1 to rest Beast. I don’t see that happening more than a few times during the season, so I expect to see Bissie and Smit to cover 2 both starting and from the bench.
