Sharks players ratings v Stormers

Wasn’t it great to actually have a Sharks game to watch over the weekend? Let’s hand out some bouquets and brickbats, even though these ratings mean even less than silly things like scorelines at this stage of the season!

1 – Beast Mtawarira. The big boy is back to his fiery best. One of the key protagonists in a superbly intense forward onslaught and made mincemeat of the Stormers front row. 8/10
2 – Craig Burden. Not on long enough to be rated.
3- Eugene van Staden. Solid as a rock in the set pieces, but his trademark runs were conspicuous by their absence. A late replacement for Jannie du Plessis, I reckon he paced himself a little because he knew he had to play the whole game. 7/10
4 – Anton Bresler. Given that this was his debut game, I don’t think it could have gone better. Safe as houses on his own lineout ball, aggressive at the point of contact and with a fair turn of pace, he was one of the Sharks best players on the day. 9/10
5 – Gerard Mostert. Probably his best showing for the Sharks to date. A hugely physical player who didn’t stand back an inch. A fair bit of the fire went out of the forwards when he was forced off. 8/10
6 – Jacques Botes. Worked hard the whole game, as he always does and helped the Sharks boss the breakdowns. Not as prominent with ball in hand as he usually is, though. 7/10
7 – Willem Alberts. Another huge performance from the big man. Still working up to his best form, but the signs are hugely encouraging. 8/10
8 – Ryan Kankowski. Had few chances to shine with ball in hand, but I reckon the coach asked Hoff for a big physical, defensive performance and that’s exactly what he got. A scary player who is only going to get better as the season progresses. 7/10

9- Charl McLeod. Simply outstanding. There cannot be a scrummie anywhere with a quicker, crisper pass. 9/10
10 – Pat Lambie. Missed a few sitters at goal, which reduce his rating, but look at the score the guy outside him gets if you want to appreciate his true value as a play-maker. 7/10
11 – Lwazi Mvovo. This kid is unstoppable. Simply unstoppable. Wow. Keep it up, Mvovs! 9/10
12 – Meyer Bosman. The Sharks’ best back on the day? I think so. A superb showing, particularly on attack where he reveled in the good ball he got from Lambie and mixed up his options well. 9/10
13 – Stefan Terblanche. An encouraging display from the skipper, who looked great outside Bosman. Guilty of an aimless kick or two, but was defensively very good. 7/10
14 – JP Pietersen. Put in a few big runs and was a monster on defence. Worked well with Odwa at the back and is another player who you can just tell is gearing up for a very big season. 8/10
15 – Odwa Ndungane. Playing out of position at fullback, he was solid as a rock and started a few telling counter-attacks. This could be his best position in 2011. 8/10

16 – Bismarck du Plessis. Ah, the Bizness is back. Played a lot more than he was planning to, after Burden went off early and showed very little rust. Physical at the breakdown, but a little quiet with ball in hand. Lineouts also a wee bit messy, but he’ll be back to his best in no time. 7/10
17 – MIA πŸ™‚
18 – Jacques Engelbrecht. An encouraging cameo from Vleis, who started off at lock then later moved to blindside flank. A VERY physical player who put in some big hits and also a run or two, although he didn’t manage to penetrate the Stormers defence with ball in hand. Looks like he will fit in well, though. 7/10
19 – Dan Adonga. Anoter very aggressive, physical guy, who unfortunately got carried away and yellow carded shortly after arriving. He deserves an extra point for his six-pack alone! 4/10h
20 – Conrad Hoffman. Looks short of game time. His service was not in the same league as McLeod’s, but since he has hardly played any rugby in a year, that’s to be expected. Will need to work hard, but I’m sure he will step up. 5/10
21 – Jacques-Louis Potgieter. An encouraging start from a player who showed how good his boot is with some good touch-finders. Put in some monster hits as well, but his distribution isn’t what Lambie’s is and offers a very different dynamic at flyhalf. The coaches will be pleased to have options in this position. 7/10
22 -Adi Jacobs. Was disappointing, but we know Adi is a class player who will be back, with a vengeance. 4/10
23 – Keegan Daniel. A quiet game from a guy who’s just finding his feet after an injury. Can only improve. 5/10
24 – Riaan Swanepoel. Put in one lovely break that should have resulted in a try, but was quiet otherwise. To be fair, the backline had lost all rhythm when he came on and there is clearly no real understanding between him and Potgieter yet. 6/10
25 – Mark Richards. Unused.

  • Bit generous with the loosies – thought we didn’t quite penetrate as we would have liked.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 5) : maybe you’re right… given the tight five supremacy, we should have done more.

Still, Stormers defended well throughout. Remember how few tries they conceded all of last year.

  • Greetings all.
    A few things:
    1. Love the new look of the site. Great work gent(s)
    2. Having rugby back on this weekend was awesome. Order was restored to the house with Barney being banished from my TV! The dinosaur, not Smittie.
    3. Dan Adonga probably got sh*t on by the coaches but i can guarantee the guys not going to feel lonely on valentine’s day after being viewed shirtless.
    4. I hate it when the sharks lose but on the whole im pretty excited that we have a fit and sharp looking bunch of young and old players.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 17) : I cannot possibly do that objectively.

    In terms of current form:

    1) Lions
    2) Cheetahs
    3) Bulls
    4) Sharks
    5) Stormers

    In terms of depth:
    1) Stormers
    2) Sharks
    3) Bulls
    4) Lions
    5) Cheetahs

In terms of where I think they’ll end up:
    1) Sharks
    2) Bulls
    3) Stormers
    4) Lions
    5) Cheetahs

  • If you go stricly according to this weekends` results:
Stormers won the Neo Africa series, despite 3 yellow cards.
Bulls selected their best team again and got a huge result.
    FS killed the poor Kings.
Lions finished second in the Tri Series
Sharks are 0 from 2 despite selecting their strongest available team.

But if you bring depth and experience into the mix that picture will change I`m sure.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 20) : I like the fact that we, on paper, look like we have very little chance of doing well. Something comforting about not being favourites.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 20) : both the Bulls and Cheetahs played against the blind school. Hardly comparing apples with apples… Sharks went down to a Lions team at full strength and a Stormers team at mostly full strength.

  • @wpw (Comment 23) : it depends on what your agenda is… Pierre is trying to find reasons to pan the Sharks (why, I don’t know) and the 1-point loss is all the ammo he needs
