Engelbrecht to join Sharks today

With the news breaking yesterday that SARU has had to step in to take over the running of the embattled and bankrupt SWD Eagles, many of that team’s players have understandably not renewed their contracts and are seeking greener pastures. One such player, Jacques Engelbrecht, looks to be on the verge of being offered a Sharks contract, after impressing while on trial with the team in Cape Town last week.

Times have been tough for the Eagles guys, many of whom haven’t been payed at all in over 3 months. After putting his body on the line for the Sharks in the Neo Africa Tri-Series last week – including a very useful half hour against the Stormers on Saturday where his physicality was put to good use – the 110kg Engelbrecht was asked to join the team in Durban this week. Our belief was that he has already been offered a contract, or that the Sharks would do so shortly.

It transpires, though, that the Sharks need yet more proof and would like Engelbrecht to play in the upcoming final trial match on Friday before making a decision. While on the one hand, Rudolf Straeuli is showing prudence in making sure he gets value for his money, I wonder whether his reticence here isn’t going to be to the Sharks ultimate detriment. After all, we all know that the Sharks need another ball carrier and saw with our own eyes how Engelbrecht looked the part in the Tri-Series. The player is understandably keen to impress and wants to play for the Sharks, but it would be foolish to assume that they are the only unions chasing his signature.

We already reported some time ago that the Bulls were in the running for his services. Don’t be too surprised, though, if Engelbrecht turns out to be yet another promising player who ends up playing for a far wealthier team than the Sharks in the near future. The Sharks and Straeuli have this one firmly in their own hands at the moment, but would do well to offer the player a fair contract and do so quickly, lest he decide to cut his losses and head elsewhere instead.

Engelbrecht will join the team in Durban today, according to our information.

  • I have not seen much of the guy yet but if he is as promising as he sounds then I’ll say ‘Give the guy a contract allready’ ๐Ÿ™‚

  • the sharks have a big squad, you can understand their reluctance to sign up extra players. but if he is good enough and he believes he is, then he must show it this friday.

  • @try time (Comment 12) : ok, then, so let’s assume Willem Alberts goes down in the first game… who replaces him at 7 for the next week?

I wouldn’t be pushing Engelbrecht so hard if I wasn’t a)convinced that the Sharks need him and b)pretty keen for him not to play for the Bulls or Lions

  • Can understand managementโ€™s predicament, we let Rhodes and the other player (forgot the name of the loose forward that went to Griquas) go as they were regarded as surplus to requirement, we had Ojiambo in the mix so the decision to let them go was justified. Englebrecht is competing with Ojiambo for the reserve loose forward impact player position. Itโ€™s a high risk high reward option vs a low risk low reward option. Ojiambo is the high risk option because if he comes right, the damage he will cause opposing teams will be a beauty to watch for Sharksโ€™ fans. Also need to think of team dynamics, canโ€™t have too many players that offer you the same thing. Also need to remember that Deysel and Alberts carry a lot of ball and therefore the risk of injury is high.Tough decisionโ€ฆ

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : Hi Rob ,

well i have to agree , we need engelbrecht , injuries come at a bad time as we know

just look at lock ?? 1st match and we lost skeate and hargreaves whilst sykes is already out injured

5 top locks sems a lot , but it changes so fast , so 5 good loosies is not enough

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : i never said it was a bad thing. i just feel he has to prove his worth like everyone else in the squad has had to. and the fact that a special squad is being put together for him and three others to earn the right to be part of the main squad says he has caught the eye of the Sharks management. but you should also look at getting some commission, his agaent does little and scores a nice paycheck if things work out. ๐Ÿ˜†

Sharks should give him a fair offer…Sharks treat their players very well and are honest in their dealings with the players. Hope to see “Vleis signing confirmed” soon…

  • @robdylan (Comment 34) : i watched jerry mcquire. i know what i’m talking about. ๐Ÿ˜† to be honest though agents are a necessary evil. we all saw the mapoe saga. but there is also the other extreme where agents use the media to up players salaries with false rumours of a player getting offers. this i think is as dirty as a union trying to screw a player over.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 33) : it is so i know who is who in the ruck. my biggest complaint with the drifta is its lack of pixels so it is difficult to see who is who in a rugby game.
