Jean Deysel’s rehabilitation after a serious knee injury is well on track, but despite reports to the contrary last week, the tough-as-nails flanker is still at least a month from making his return to competitive rugby.
The Sharks XV are heading to Newcastle on Friday to play in a warm-up match and a local newspaper created a fair bit of interest by suggesting that Deysel would be playing. Sharksworld have confirmed that while Deysel will indeed be making the trip with the side and taking part in various marketing (and golf) related activities, he certainly won’t be pulling on the white and black jersey this week.
Recent training-ground photos would suggest that while the 25-year-old is taking part in some training activities, his knee is far from 100% and still needs regular icing. One source close to the team has suggested that his return to the field of play is somewhere between 6-8 weeks away, meaning a probable gradual introduction via the Vodacom Cup, followed by a return to the Super Rugby squad in time for the second half of the campaign.
Deysel’s ongoing unavailability creates a clear gap in the squad for a ball-carrying loose forward to fill. Jacques Engelbrecht seems earmarked to be that player, while young loose forwards such as Lambert Groenewald and Marcell Coetzee will want to use their Vodacom Cup opportunities to prove that they also deserve a shot at Super Rugby selection.

Rather get it in tip top before sending him to the battlefields! Wishing Jean a full recovery!
We clearly need Engelbrecht as an extra big ball carrier…just hope we get the confirmation soon. Then we have 3 really solid and big ball carriers from the looseforwards. Now Alberts can play 8 more often cause Kanko seems to play quite a lot now and then. Have not seen Much of Marcell, but he looks to be a good prospect. Also would like to see Adonga develop further in The Sharks XV and Hopefully he gets a good run fro the first team in the Currie Cup. Also keen to see What Francois Kleinhans can do…the depth in our rugby is great…how awesome it is to be A Sharks supporter!
Rather take is slow Jean!! Looking forward to seeing Jean on Friday even if he isn’t playing
We must not rush Deysel…we get him to 110% then we bring him back…he is going to make a huge impact when he returns…so much to look forward to this season…truly awesome rugby year.
@JJR (Comment 2) : Kleinhans excites me… Natural successor to Botes and Daniel at 6.
? I was hoping my love affair with rugby would give me a sweet valentineβs day, but alas not to be with sour news like this.
Happy v day to all of you ,ps stormers looked poor against Boland, all except JDV
@Talent (Comment 6) : let’s hope (for their sake) the Stormers manage to put their extra week of preparation to good use.
@Ice (KCM) (Comment 1) :
Only battlefield for him this Friday must be Majuba.
@Pokkel (Comment 3) :
Are you playing a round with him?
@robdylan (Comment 7) : to me they just look poorly conditioned !
@Salmonoid (Comment 8) : Speaking of battlefields, didn’t France look scary at times against Ireland yesterday in Dublin?
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 11) :
I only got the last 20 or so minutes. I was in a a bit of a switched off state. I just sat back and enjoyed. I wish I had seen the whole game. Ireland could have stolen it at the end.
@Ice (KCM) (Comment 1) : yas,he shouldnt be rushed back into action..there is (hopefully)still a s15 in 2012..mustnt be short-sighted..and sharks must try to regain cc in 2011..
@robdylan (Comment 5) : how about an interview with the 3 young loosies(groenewald,coetzee and kleinhans)?
@Salmonoid (Comment 9) : No…I’m going to stalk him (in true Sharksworld fasion) and see if he’ll give me a couple of minutes to chat to him.
@robdylan:what has become of jaco otto??? he looked like a keegan daniel’s type player.
is he still playing clubrugby in dbn?
@Pokkel (Comment 15) :
Ask Rob to email the handbook on stalking – its a work in progress.
So did anyone see a much mellower JLP interviewed on Shark Bite over the weekend?
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 18) : no… what did he have to say?
@robdylan (Comment 19) : The insert was on BVS being brought in for the kicking, and they cut to JLP who spoke about BVS, and how he is settling in nicely and enjoying the vibe. Plum must know what role he wants him to play, and he certainly looked and sounded like a man with more idea of his role in the squad now, and less like someone skulking on the bench with his nose put out of joint by the rise of The One and Only SuperPat…
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 20) : that’s good to hear.
I saw the Greatest Band in the World live last night. π
@klempie (Comment 22) :
You saw Def Leppard last night, where?
@Salmonoid (Comment 23) : you chose that name very carefully, didn’t you? Sneaky… π
@klempie (Comment 22) :
Did u see Steve Hofmeyer there??
π
@robdylan (Comment 24) : π
@wpw (Comment 25) : No but it was amazing NONETHELESS! π
@wpw (Comment 25) : Wesley… don’t be silly now.
@Salmonoid (Comment 23) : Please dude. I love some Def Leppard as much as the rest of em. U2 are simply the greatest. 360 Tour is already second highest grossing behind the Stones and they’re not even half way. The will pass them with like 2/3rds the number of concerts. π π They are awesome.
@klempie (Comment 29) :
Pah, U2 is to music what T20 is to cricket. π
@Salmonoid (Comment 30) : agree… an overrated band that has attained some sort of cult-like status by the simple expedient of churning out consistently mediocre pseudo-rock songs for 30 years without breaking up.
@Salmonoid (Comment 30) : Ouch π― π
I am always so worried that they injure themselves in the club games and VC.
Can’t he come on like 5 min of the bench a few games or something or is that to risky.
@robdylan (Comment 31) : And Def Leppard were the first band to tour with a 360 degree stage, so they’re not even original.
Any news on where jaco otto is these days?is he playing clubrugby in dbn?why didn’t kzn varsity grt him on loan or contract or whatever for their varsity shield games?
Any news on where jaco otto is these days?is he playing clubrugby in dbn?why didn’t kzn varsity get him on loan or contract or whatever for their varsity shield games?
@robdylan (Comment 31) : Couldn’t put it better myself.
Pardon the duplicate(almost)entry.
@robdylan (Comment 24) :

@SharonvanWyk (Comment 38) : I just think they’re overrated as songwriters, musicians and performers. Plus I find their music indescribably samey and dull
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 40) : I love this hairstyle… π
@robdylan (Comment 41) : I must confess to owning The Joshua Tree, but only because Joe Elliott gave it to me!
@robdylan (Comment 42) : Oh god. That IS classic. It was down to his waist when I met him, I promise! Still an awesome guitarist, and even more awesome guy. Love him to bits.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 43) : Joe Elliott… hmmm. Look, I love Def Lep, but I wouldn’t say I rate old Joe as one of the top rock vocalists of all time. He’s better than Bono, at least π
@robdylan (Comment 42) : How do I post a pic?
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 44) :
π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 44) : I’m just teasing… he’s in awesome shape for an older guy.
I didn’t realise he wrote “Miss you in a heartbeat”. That’s one of my favourite Def Lep songs.
@robdylan (Comment 45) : Nah, even Joe doesn’t rate Joe.
I don’t enjoy U2’s new stuff at all. The last decent album they made was Achtung Baby and it was probably in the best 3 they made together with The Joshua tree and Rattle & Hum.
@Salmonoid (Comment 30) : AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN A thousand times Amen
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 46) : mail it to me and I’ll do it for you… [email protected]
let me see… I like exactly 3 U2 songs.
1) One (which is better when it’s not them performing it)
2) Stuck in a Moment
3) actually I lied. There isn’t a 3rd one that I like. All I Want is You is passable.
@robdylan (Comment 48) : He is in good nick. He’s got a fantastic voice too. Have you heard any of Man Raze’s stuff? And Miss you in a heartbeat is an all-time great. Here’s a bit of rugby trivia: when they toured SA in December 96 I bought him a Springbok No 6 jersey for his birthday, which he wore for part of the Durban gig.
@robdylan (Comment 53) : Quite like Elevation. Gets my feet tapping.
Sharksworld suddenly become a place to blog about “all bands past their prime..and one or two that never even got there..” ..?? Lol
I once saw roxette wear a lions rugby jersey at a performance in jhb(didn’t see the show live,only saw the broadcast on tv)..only blot on her career..
@Pokkel (Comment 50) : I’ll go along with that.
@bergshark (Comment 56) : OK. Point taken. So let’s make it about all rugby players past their prime and a few that never got there… !!! I’ll start… Bryan Habana. π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 54) : you should send him a Sharks one too π
@robdylan (Comment 60) : Get him a No 10 one to wear on tour this year!
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 61) : are htey seriously still touring?
@robdylan (Comment 31) : 22 Grammies says otherwise.
@klempie (Comment 63) : you mean 22 grammies “say” otherwise, I take it?
I consider the fact that Depeche Mode have never won a grammy a pretty good reason to completely negate the worth of such awards
@robdylan (Comment 45) : You didn’t hear Bono singing the operatic part of Miss Sarajevo last night.
The timing of his return will be perfect. The Sharks will be on tour, so he can play VC for a game or two before getting back into the Sharks side.
@robdylan (Comment 64) : Grammies can’t speak, so clearly it was not them I was saying was saying it. π
@klempie (Comment 65) : if I wanna hear opera, I’ll go watch someone competent.
Who woulda thought cynical old Klempie was a groupie for one of the most commercially mainstream bands of all time?
@robdylan (Comment 53) : Oh come on!! Where the Streets Have No Name doesn’t feature at all?? You know nothing MAN! π
And no-one has taken the Bryan Habana bait! π
@klempie (Comment 65) :
Nor did you – that was a voice over.
@klempie (Comment 67) : umm, dude, poetic licence is one thing, but that was grammatically just wrong.
@klempie (Comment 69) : @robdylan (Comment 68) : Steady boys. Bono’s a peacemaker, not a warmonger!
@klempie (Comment 69) : the Pet Shop Boys mashup of that wasn’t bad…
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 70) :
Oh was that bait?
You can’t use the truth as bait. π
@robdylan (Comment 72) : Yes. But I AM poetically licensed. So there! π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 70) : sorry- must’ve missed that one.
Habana is being made to pay, karmically and for all eternity, for that “try” in 2007. And he deserves nothing less.
@robdylan (Comment 64) : Grammy schmammy! Although the Arcade Fire won best album last night, so it would seem even they can get things right once in a while…
@Salmonoid (Comment 71) : Prove your fanciful allegation. π
@Culling Song (Comment 78) : What is a Culling Song anyway?
Any takers for Bryan Habana being over the hill and far away? π Help to diffuse the U2 standoff?
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 81) : that just makes me sad about Gary all over again π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 81) : We all know that Habana is over the hill…no need to discuss that!
@klempie (Comment 79) : Did U2 play mostly their new stuff or did they revert back to the older classics
@klempie (Comment 80) : An African poem that, when read out to someone, results in them dying of no visible cause. At least that’s the central plot premise of Lyllaby by Chuck Palahnuik. Fun book!
@klempie (Comment 80) : Forgot to add that is supposedly used by tribesman to eliminate the old and infirm, hence the “culling” part.
@Pokkel (Comment 83) : They played three songs off their new album. And then the classics.
It’s ironic the Rob gives them grief about being “samey” because their new stuff and Pop shows that they’re prepared to experiment.
@Culling Song (Comment 84) : @Culling Song (Comment 85) : You’re creepy… π―
@robdylan (Comment 82) : Was a fine man. Master of sustain… and sadly missed.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 88) : So is Sharonvanwyk your real name?
Should he be playing golf with that knee?
@Pokkel (Comment 89) : Yup. Born Gilbert. Like the ball. Married a boertjie. Became established in SA as a writer under the boertjie name. Divorced the boertjie. Left with the name… Which I actually like.
@klempie (Comment 79) :
I read about it on the Milli Vanilli fan page.
@Salmonoid (Comment 92) :
Considering their reputation for deception, you should choose your sources more carefully. π π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 81) : no bait, Sharon! I wholeheartedly agree and was taken to pieces for saying it last year! π
@klempie (Comment 93) :
It takes one to know one, so they must be a credible source.
Same goes for chain yankers and stirrers.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 91) : Are you Dr. Sharon van Wyk Ph.D ??
Sharon – care to do a “get to know the blogger” questionaire with me? If ur willing, please pop me a mail @ [email protected]
@Pokkel (Comment 96) : Pokkel!!! Manners!! Tsk tsk! π
@Salmonoid (Comment 95) :
Same goes for chain yankers and stirrers.
Is that why we get on so well? π
@Ice (Comment 98) : She is a well known writer…we should be honoured to have her in our presence.
@Pokkel (Comment 100) : At least it will encourage some sort of an improvement on the quality of the journalism here. Peer review and all that. π
@klempie (Comment 101) : Ja Klempie!
@Pokkel (Comment 102) : π
@Pokkel (Comment 96) : Nope. Just plain Sharon. Writer. Film-maker. Rugger fan. Check out http://www.paintedearth.tv if u like. Or google me. I write for the Mail & Guardian a lot. And Africa Geographic.
@Pokkel (Comment 100) : we are indeed Pokkel!
@klempie (Comment 99) :
Ja Klempie.
Thanks everyone. But it’s me who is honoured. I just LOVE Sharksworld. And interacting with all of you. And getting to shoot the breeze about the Sharks and rugby… umm… and rock and roll! Appreciate your support.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 88) : speaking of which, got me an Epi Les Paul for my birthday…. can’t tell you how that thing hold a note compared to the Fenders and Ibanezes I have
@klempie (Comment 86) : prepared to experiment, and yet they know they’ll have a riot on their hands if they play more than 3 of their news songs at a concert aimed to promote their new material… limited musicians though they may be, at least U2 ain’t stupid π
@robdylan: anyone going to give updates bout the vc side’s game in newcastle this friday?
@klempie (Comment 87) : Geez, talk about judging a book by it’s cover!
I mean, how creepy is this? Caucasian male, approaching 40, happily married with kid, polite, respectful towards his elders, love his parents, kind to animals… although, in fairness, come to think of it, that’s pretty much the profile of most of the notorious American serial killers π
@robdylan (Comment 108) : There’s no comparison, even with the Epi’s. Phil’s first guitar was an SG, the sound was amazing, even compared to the Jacksons. Never rated Fenders. I know Hendrix loved them, but I always thought that Fenders were for people who couldn’t spell Gibson!
@bergshark (Comment 110) : I know Pokkel is gonna try be there…
@robdylan (Comment 108) : That said, the T-bird bass is an awesome instrument.
@Culling Song:don’t know how happily married those american serial killers were?if married at all?
@robdylan: hope he can make it.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 112) : well, both brands have their fans, of course – and a guy like Clapton can do completely bezerk things with a Strat too. Listen to the intro to Phil Collins’ “I wish it would rain down”, for example. Not bad sustain for a bolt-on π
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 112) : I’ll always have a soft spot for the Flying V, Mk II. Add a couple of twin DiMarzio’s and a Floyd Rose whammy and HEAVEN!
@robdylan (Comment 117) : True. I think I got a negative mind-set against the Strat because I hated Ritchie Blackmore with a vengeance. I pissed him off once by asking him if he was David Coverdale.
@robdylan (Comment 117) : Believe it or not, one of the best unsung guitarists ever has to be Prince. Saw him live before I moved back to SA and my LORD can that man hold a note!
Has music become the topic?? π
@robdylan (Comment 117) : Check him out… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=madax7-lMvM
Awesome.
@Ben (Comment 121) : Nah. Just a bit of a tangent. Feel free to change the subject! Got to go and do the supper thing now anyways! And anyway – music is important to rugby – it helps in visualisation techniques!
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 123) : haha no was just teasing.
@robdylan (Comment 109) : So what you’re saying is, they’re victims of their own success? π
@Culling Song (Comment 111) : π
Rob and Sharon…….Paul Reed Smith……if you like Gibsons, try a Paul Reed Smith creation, amazing what he does, and just a few miles from my house.
@bergshark (Comment 115) : *phew!* That’s me off the hook then!
@bergshark (Comment 37) : In response to the query on Jaco- he is playing club rugby in Dbn this year after being deemed “too small” by those in their selection capacity at the Sharks.
If you want to know how good he is just try play touch rugby with the guy…he will somehow manage to steal the ball from you while you running with it! I guess he just doesnt fit into the game plan though.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 127) : they are beautiful, DB… no doubt about that. Problem is, for me, I could never afford one. If there was a cheaper version of the PRS, just like the Epiphone is a cheaper version of Gibson, I would be seriously tempted.
@klempie (Comment 125) : no – I’m saying I find them boring and predictable, but at least they seem to have plenty of fans to match
