Stormers need hooker cover

There was far more bad than good coming out of the Stormers’ patchy 34-6 win over neighbours Boland this weekend. While there was little encouraging play dished up by a strong Stormers combination, it is the knee injury to hooker Tiaan Liebenberg that will cause Alister Coetzee the most concern.

Liebenberg was stretchered off the field 45 minutes into the game with what was initially feared to be a dreaded anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, an injury that invariably means at least 9 months on the sidelines. Scans have confirmed, though, that it is not as serious as first suspected and is a medial ligament injury, carrying a far shorter recovery period of just over two months. It’s a blow nevertheless, with the former Griquas rake now certain to miss almost half of the Super Rugby campaign.

The Stormers are blessed with talented loose forwards and backs aplenty, but their Achilles heel, so cruelly exposed in two final defeats last season, has always been their front five. While they have improved through the acquisition of a few hard men, such as Anton van Zyl and CJ van der Linde, coupled with the arrival of a superb forwards coach in Matt Proudfoot, all but the most staunchly one-eyed Province men will concede that tight five depth is not the Stormers’ strong suit. With Liebenberg out and his designated backup, Deon Fourie, lacking the necessary grunt to replicate his impact, the Stormers, simply put, have a huge problem.

Already struggling to decide which of their untested flyhalves they are going to entrust with the starting jersey, assuming Peter Grant is further delayed in Japan, they now face the additional dire prospect of handing a maiden Super Rugby cap to a hooker such as Siyabonga Ntubeni, who despite some encouraging warmup form, has yet to so much so play a Currie Cup game.

If I were Rassie Erasmus, I’d be on the blower to Rudolf Straeuli this morning asking, or rather begging, for him to send Kyle Cooper down the Newlands for the duration of the Super Rugby season.

  • I’d also like to make the point that playing in Japan lowers the standard of your play, Jaco vd Westhuizen being the obvious example. I’ve always rated Peter Grant and I hope he arrives back and adapts to the more physical and skillful game quickly otherwise the Stormers really will have a problem at flyhalf.

  • There’s that hooker that captained the Pumas last year and is now playing for the Kings, he is strong and experienced…just what the Stormers need in their tight five. Reluctant to send Kyle to the Cape.

  • To quote Gavin Rich: “The reason I rate the Sharks chances above the Stormers at this stage, is because they seem to already know what kind of style they want to play” I thought that was quite true.
We know what kind of players Pat and JLP are, but what to make of these Stormers flyhalves?

I think they need to ship someone in Pronto.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 28) : but who?

Bergshark has a point about Wepener, but doubt they’d get him. Strauss doesn’t want to come back – he wants to play for Ireland.

none of the franchises is going to release any of their squad hookers now, so even a guy like Burden won’t be available (and he is too similar to Fourie anyway… Stormers need a tighter hooker).

Hannes Franklin has some experience, so does Hans van Dijk, but I wouldn’t break the bank for either.

Cooper is the best of what’s left, I would say.
