Smit likely to start at loosehead

The Sharks recorded their first win in last year’s Super 14 – after five consecutive losses – when they moved captain John Smit to loosehead prop for their game against the Highlanders. John Plumtree looks set to repeat that switch a fair bit earlier in the season, when he names his side to face the Cheetahs.

With the Sharks boasting four Springbok front-rankers in their squad, it’s inevitable that someone is going to have to be on the bench each week and if sources are to be believed, it will be Tendai Mtawarira who plays off the wood this week, with Smit starting in the number 1 jersey, alongside the du Plessis brothers. The rest of the pack has a settled look about it, with Steven Sykes and Alistair Hargreaves set to continue as the locks, having both recovered from pre-season injury concerns. Jacques Botes comes in at openside flank, to partner Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowski in an exciting back row. Eugene van Staden and Anton Bresler are both newcomers to Super Rugby and will look to make their respective debuts for the Sharks in this competition off the bench, alongside the vastly experienced pair of Mtawarira and Keegan Daniel.

The backline also shows remarkable continuity, with Meyer Bosman, coming in at 12 to replace Andries Strauss, the only change to the unit that played in the Currie Cup final. Odwa Ndungane looks set to play on the right wing, although he will be bracketed with JP Pietersen, who we understand stands little chance of passing a late fitness test. Charl McLeod, Pat Lambie, Stefan Terblanche, Lwazi Mvovo and Louis Ludik comprise the remainder of the backline, while Conrad Hoffman and Jacques-Louis Potgieter will also look to make their official Sharks debuts off the bench. Should Pietersen fail to play, as expected, Adi Jacobs will be in the number 22 jersey.

Probable Sharks team:
15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 John Smit (captain)
16 Tendai Mtawarira, 17 Eugene van Staden, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Keegan Daniel, 20 Conrad Hoffman, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Adi Jacobs

  • So how many points do you think the Sharks will need to get out of their Conference assuming they don’t win it !

    Interesting question..

I would think you would have to at least win all your home games, and then to be safe, a few on the road as well.

I reckon around 45 points, by guess..

It sure is going to make it interesting all the way through the season.

In the past there were only two spots available in the playoffs as we knew the Crusaders and Bulls would be there. Different story now..

  • Player management is key for such a long season. Lots of rotation. Maybe 40 mins each for the first couple of games.

  • This is a decent team. We are in a so much better situation that last year this time. Plus we got Super Pat and The Mvovo Express and Alberts. I can’t wait for Saturday, I’m already getting goose bumps.

The New Zealand conference is the strongest of the lot..

I think the Blues have a very strong team, as does the Crusaders. But then the Hurricanes and Chiefs are always strong. Its going to be very tight..

  • i thought it was jp’s injury (the introduction of the bulldozer mvovo) and moving stefan into the backline that changed the sharks fortunes around? cos game 6 was when stefan stopped kicking all his possession away and the backline started featuring.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 16) : i haven’t been paying attention to any law changes or amendments this year. but i recall that irb discussed adding an extra frontrower to the bench, making the squad 23. are sanzar not using this change?

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 19) : oh ok. i thought it was seriously being looked at, because it was discussed by the commentators during the sharks warm up when they had uncontested scrums. so i thought it was being phased in by the world cup.

  • I read an interesting article be Dewald Potgiter on Supersport that the Bulls have been with discussion with a lot of the referees. The refs indicated how the stats showed that they blowing 80% in favour for the attacking team last year, and that they got instructed to bring that stat down to 50% for the attacking and 50 for the defencive team. Potgiter goes on to say that teams, including the Bulls, have been practising the ball in hand, fast tempo game in the pre-season, and that he is anxious that teams game plans will change after 4 to 5 weeks. Just keep a watch out in the next few weeks to see if this materialises.

  • Now I see a bit more kicking than we expected by this referee instruction from high above to blow equally for both attacking and defensive teams. Teams would probably stop running from their own try line, and would rather use the boot to a degree. Would someone like JLP become more valuable? Its makes for some interesting viewing.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 24) : It probably does, but the laws at the breakdown still stand. Saying that I watched a youtube video made me Gary Gold, showing that the breakdown laws would not effect Brussouw as he stayed on his feet, let the tackler go and then contested for the ball during 2009.

  • Smit would naturally start the first game being capatain. No surprise there. Also think he will start most games being our first choice captain. Think only when he is rested totally for a game he wont start. So expect to see Smit start at any of the 3 front row positions.

Beast coming from the bench, will be hangish for Lions to handle. 😎

Good luck Sharks. Can’t wait for Saturday. Now hope the weather stays dry. Still far to hot and humid, but with the rain that is forecast for Saturday, will make it a lot worse.
