The Crusaders are keen to get their season off to a good start when they play the Blues at Eden Park in their Investec Super Rugby season opener on Saturday night.

The Crusaders Official website reports that head coach Todd Blackadder said: “It’s an exciting time and we’re entering the unknown a little bit with the new format of the competition, but we are looking for a good performance against the Blues.

“These derby matches are very important with the new conference system and I hear there will be a big crowd at Eden Park so the atmosphere should be superb.”

Matt Todd has been named in the number seven jersey in the absence of the injured Richie McCaw – who had successful surgery on his foot on Tuesday.

It will be Todd’s first game for the Crusaders.

Kieran Read will captain the team from No8.

Fullback Israel Dagg is in the side after missing last week’s final pre-season game against the Highlanders in Oamaru with a sore thigh.

Sean Maitland moves to the right wing, replacing Zac Guildford who pulled a hamstring in that match.

Francis Smith, the Tasman player called into cover hooker, is a replacement for that position on the reserves bench.

Reserve lock Chris Jack will play his 99th game for the Crusaders if he takes the field.

Players making their Crusaders debut: Todd, Dagg, and possibly Smith, Matt Berquist and Tom Marshall/Tyler Bleyendaal.

Unavailable through injury: Richie McCaw (foot), Sonny Bill Williams (lower leg), Joe Wheeler (shoulder), Quentin MacDonald (knee), Zac Guildford (hamstring), Ryan Crotty (thumb), Kahn Fotuali’i (back), David Hall (calf).

The Crusaders team to play the Blues at 7.35pm on Saturday 19 Feb at Eden Park, Auckland, is as follows:

  • Those teams make the cross conferences games look easy !

Well maybe not the Bulls, Tahs and Reds ! 😈 😈 😈

…..in fact that leaves only one spot up for grabs and obviously it will come from SA and looks a straight shoot out between the Sharks and Stormers !

Good luck lads….here’s to a quicker start this season ! 😉
