Sharks XV coach Sean Everitt has named a 24-man squad to represent the Sharks XV in an exhibition match in Newcastle on Friday afternoon. The presence of Super Rugby players of the calibre of Gerhard Mostert and Riaan Swanepoel adds some experience to an otherwise young, although very exciting, lineup.

In an interesting move up-front, regular loosehead prop Dale Chadwick moves over to the tighthead side, where he will join Sabelo Nhlapo and Kyle Cooper in a strong front row. Mostert, who is clearly in need of game time, partners Jandre Marais in the second row, with the young loose trio of Francois Kleinhans, Lambert Groenewald and Marcell Coetzee set to carry on from where they left off in last week’s trial match.

On an extended bench, veteran Sharks and Leicester prop Robbie Harris will provide front row cover, while Baby Bok hooker Monde Hadebe will replace Cooper at some stage in the game. Rovers lock Byron Egan and his club teammate Nico Claasen (flank) complete the forwards contingent, while Dan Adonga has also been named in the number 23 jersey. It’s not clear at this stage whether he’ll be used as a forward or a back, but the former is more likely.

The Conrje twins will operate at scrumhalf and flyhalf, with Riaan Swanepoel taking over from Howard Mnisi at inside centre. The latter will play off the bench. Jerome Pretorius will wear 13, with Anton Verster coming in at left wing to partner Mark Richards and Kobus de Kock in a back three that is full of pace and attacking potential.

The impressive young duo of Cobus Reinach and Fred Zeilinga will take over from the blonde brothers in the second half, with Luzuko Vulindlu set to be given a chance to blow off some off-season rust as he completes the replacement list.

The match against the Newcastle Highlanders Invitational XV kicks off at 18h30 at Lammergeyer Rugby Club.

  • Rob do you get any feedback on Wynand Pienaar’s form from the last game?
I’m keen to see Kobus de Kock play, he sounds like a useful player.
