Sharks start with a win

The Sharks got their Super Rugby season off to a great start with a dominant 24 – 9 victory over the Toyota Cheetahs at Mr Price Kings Park on Saturday evening. The match might not have been the greatest game ever, but the Sharks managed to keep the 27000 odd people in the stadium pretty happy, picking up four important points.

Last minute changes to the team after John Smit had injured his calf at the captain’s run on Friday, brought Beast Mtawarira into the starting lineup and Craig Burden earning a spot on the bench.

The rain failed to dampen the affair as the Sharks ran in 2 tries, the first of which was scored in the 3rd minute by Jacques Botes after a push over from a line out. Lambie failed in his conversion attempt, which left the Sharks 5 – 0 up before the Cheetahs had even blinked.

That was the only try in the first half, which saw penalties traded after the explosive start, Lambie slotting one in the eighth minute and Naas Olivier getting his team on the board in the 33rd minute. Stefan Terblanche came agonizingly close with two 55m long range penalties, but he could just not get his radar on.

Cheetahs opened the scoring in he second half with another Olivier penalty, which Lambie responded to not 5 minutes later, to keep the gap at 5 points. Lambie then stretched the lead by a further three points with a successful penalty conversion 3 minutes later. 14 – 6 with half an hour still to play.

After a rather boring spell in the game, Olivier managed to get the scoreboard ticking again with a penalty from right in front. 17 minutes to play and it was still a 5 point game.

A certain try was snuffed after a 5m lineout was mauled up and Alberts was stopped centimeters from the line, after which McLeod dropped the ball as he tried to dot down. The try was scored minutes later after a maul from a lineout gave Bismarck his first try of the season. Lambie, who has certainly worked on his kicking, slotted from the sideline to stretch the lead to 12 points.

Jacques-Louis Potgieter came on for Lambie in the 70th minute to make his Sharks debut, and was called upon to kick at goal just 2 minutes later, a penalty he duly went on to miss. Potgieter got another chance 5 minutes from the end, and on this occasion scored his first points in the Black and White, making it 24 – 9.

Another debutant, Conrad Hoffmann, made his first, albeit short, appearance for the Sharks, while a Sharks legend became a Super Rugby centurion when Adi Jacobs took to the field to play for the final 2 minutes.

Man of the Match went to Willem Alberts who was as influential as ever, making huge runs, but being even better on defence, putting in a few great hits.

The game was marred by aimless kicking by both teams, the Cheetahs continuing with the up-and-under approach, whereas the Sharks kept kicking straight down the middle of the park. The match offered very little in viewing pleasure, but the Sharks managed to overcome their bogus team and record the first victory of the 2011 Super Season.

  • Hello there; been gone far too long, I hope you all missed my intelligent rugby insight… Ja, Ja – good to be back… Look; this first game was not a classic, and the team itself admits that, but I am pleased that we got the first game in the bag and we can build from there…

  • It wasn’t the prettiest game, and both coaches admitted as much. But 4 points is 4 points more than we had at this stage last year.

The boys will be full of confidence going into the Blues fixtuure now..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 26) : Yeah, the Blues looked dangerous and committed, fighting back like that… But we would definitely have taken confidence from the result, and I think that we can beat the Blues at home (again)… Remember that Deysel hand-off on Kaino from last season – EPIC – can’t wait to have him back, hunting in tandem with Big Vic.

  • Ice.

I had a look at Coenie Oosthuizen’s penalties.

One EARLY in the game for a tackle/ruck offence. then 4 late in the game (66, 72, 75, 78minutes)

While HE did repeat the infringements not one of those were really the same infringement and at that late stage in the game i think craig did the right thing by not warning or giving him a YC.

Yes it wasnt a pretty game, but we dominated them. The Cheetahs didn’t look like scoring a try once.

The first game of a season is always going to be scrappy, and remember that a lot of our forwards were injured in preseason and this was their first real taste of decent rugby.

I think you need to calm down just a bit and not be so frikken negative, we won FFS!!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 38) : we have been looking “out of sorts” for 3 games now…we don’t look like a team with a attacking plan…take england or the tahs on the attack…england take the ball flat-turning the defense and then off loading with a inside pass…its looks scripted(structured) the saders and the tahs play the all black game…they play out of the deep allowing the inside support to reconnect with the line(maties does this aswell) the blues simply don’t skip pass they play secure hand to hand from the prop to the wing…keeping it in hand and gaining yard for yard…we simply tos it out…no no plan with the occasional behind the back or dubble around!!! That’s high school rugby bud!!!we rely on some one breaking the line…if it doesent work we reset a ruck(this we do better that any team because we can keep position with the least amount of players) we need to have the ball in the air for a longer amount of time…and keep it with purpose…FFS a win is a win-true but we are building our win on crap basics, and this was the same shit with the neo series…we look like the same old same old from that crap series…

You sound like WP suporter, putting so much into a stupid warm up campaign..

It might not look good bud, but we beat the Cheetahs and we bet them by the second biggest margin this weekend. So whother its schoolboy rugby or not, we beat a Super Rugby Team, no scrap that, we dominated a Super Rugby Team. And I am willing to bet you anything you like that we will beat the Blues this weekend.

Stop being such pessimists and take the win.

If you know anything about rugby, you will know that the first weekend of Super Rugby is always scrappy. Every single team looked scrappy, even the Waratahs looked scrappy at the start of their game.

  • Loads of testosterone here this morning.

Fact is that the Sharks played well in the forwards, but not in the backs – even taking the weather into consideration.

Distribution by 9 and 10 was not as accurate as it should be, and we were predictable on attack.

However, it is early season, and we may just have needed a competitive game to get the blood flowing. Hell, even the abysmal lineouts were probably due to the locks being injured for so long.

Regarding Oupa: a stand-up guy and a good captain, but I would start him at 15 and Adi at 13: we need some penetration in midfield.

  • Well so it was ok for Stefan to sit in the Supersport studio and take a dig at the Bok centres on the EOYT…Adi got injured last season against the Hurricanes, had more then 6 months lay-off, game back against WP in the last CC round robin game for 32 min, did good ball in hand and defence, supportive line running on Lambie and scoring a try on the hooter, was omissioned for Semi and Final of CC, then played 15 min against Ireland did his part, did not get a chance against Scotland from the bench, was very good against England, the Baabas game was a shambles, everyone was average in that game, media gave him 7/10 on everage for EOYT, this year play 15min in Neo-Tri Series against Lions, looked sharp, against Stormers he struggled, but we know his ability that’s no argument, just needing a fair chance…

Okay the conditions didn`t exactly help but come on, compared the the Blues / Crusers we are way off the pace.
If we kick even half as much again next week Rene Ranger will put 30 past us.

I`ll be back with a more detailed assessment later on. Bismarck can expect some Vodacom Cup rugby in his future if I had my way!
Or if we really want to boycott the Stormers offer him in stead of Cooper?

I know he decides to kick at goal, but does his form at practice justify him taking them. This in light of the new no.12 we have, who I thought has a bit more distance in his placekicking game.

I for one went to Kingspark (wow! it feels really good to call it that again after all these yrs) with low quality rugby expectations hoping only for a 1st round win & 4 pts. Despite this attitude I was still disappointed by the Sharks on ATTACK. Their lack of variation and inability (I can’t even say slowness) to reset their attack to take advantage of opportunities is cause for concern. I understand that we are flat pass side that enjoys playing on the gain and have a current midfield who rely on tackle bursting rather than creative genius or speed to penetrate defences. However I really hope we work hard on our 2nd dimension otherwise we’re going to be a pretty predictable to defend against and boring side to watch. Our match tactics set up Willem for the MotM from the word go. Our defence on the other hand was up to scratch and we are capable of unsettling even the best of attacking sides. Here’s to improved attack going forward. Go Sharks!

Charlie you defence of and promotion of Adi at every opportunity is admirable but I afraid also very predictable.

The Captain MAY have some say in selection in some teams (Think Smith at the proteas, Victor on EOYT, etc.) but let’s not forget that Stefan only became Captain a few hours before kick-off and HE didn’t then drop Adi to the bench.

  • @beet (Comment 67) : you have three people kicking at goal from 55m out, during the warm up. one of those three, kicks it over regularly while the others fall short.

Which one of those would you choose?

Stefan chose the same one any sane person would choose.

Agree with you: the current midfield approach is exactly why I feel we desperately need a 13 like Adi in there: we need someone who has pace, power or a good step to take advantage of the smart passing coming from 10 and 12.

13 is the only area where I feel we have a real gap in the squad.

  • Calm down everyone. Damn you think we had lost the way some are going on. Sure it was not great rugby to watch, but who ever thinks we can play attractive rugby in the pouring rain with 100%humidity, is just fooling themselves. IN those conditions you just try to win the damn game. WE DID. Proud of our team. We sitting on top of our conference right now.

We have to win all our home games to have a chance to top our conference. We off to a good start. We will get to see our team playing great rugby once FEB has gone. Far to humid this month for great rugby actually. Just pleased after next week we travel. Much better.

Get behind our team and stop the bloody moaning.

    GO SHARKS.

  • @bergshark (Comment 98) : Howzit mate, On my way out so will answer this quick.

Yes agree, Cheetahs played spoiling rugby yesterday, that alone puts us off our game too. BUT in those conditions no team could have played better. Once there is rain it pushes the humidity right up, which is bad as it is anyhow. Not great condtions to play rugby in. All we have to always think of is to get the win. We done just that. So I am pleased. WE off to a good start. Now just checked the weather for next Saturday and there seems it may rain again. But think if it rains we have a better chance against the Blues. My feeling.

Okay now out of here. Catch up tomorrow.
